Another 48-cut family from a typeface system which originally arose from the need to simply explain to some publishers what it is “serif, sans-serif, egyptian”, etc. including their style variations. Balboa Plus is a condensed sans serif display family. It was originally conceived as a simple black and white typeface. But it seemed unfinished, begging for something more. I decided to try adding a couple layers of fill and detail to try and make it interesting. The result is this four-layer chromatic font family. The Primary Font is the Main Font. The other fonts ( Fill, Inline, and Gradient) only exist to support the Primary Font. The Fill font should sit behind the Primary font (there is a little color trapping going on). The rest is even easier. There is a free downloadable PDF Balboa User Manual in the Gallery section for this family. It has samples and some backstory. A modern sans serif typeface inspired by the historic geometric’s of the 1920’s, specifically Futura. The design is not a simple pastiche of what went before this is much more than that. It is a close investigation to how Futura inspired other type designs like Avenir and helped push the boundary of what is a modern typeface of its generation. The rasterized square (clear, therefore 4 as part of the font name) was the constructive basis. The intention was to put all characters within this grid and produce a highly structured, yet lively, resting in itself, display font. Relaxed but exciting, just. An absolutely noteworthy detail are the classical construction principles (based on a typography book from the 50's for poster designers), the so-called optical weighting, derived and slightly exaggerated character elements: The characters are not purely symmetrical and the curve shapes do not close justified with the surrounding square. Loops and tongues slightly hang over; the upper bows are slightly less protruding than lower ones, etc. The kerning is tuned to fit these design details: the white space between the characters match the same filling space.

Introducing Megatropolis : intellectual, architectural, urban and urbane. What started as an idea where the counters would be letters (3 scribbled glyphs on a piece of scrap paper), has grown into a mighty font family of eight stackable fonts. First came Megatropolis itself, a Deco font within a Deco font; Double Deco, you might say. Pounder Fonts were designed by Tom Nikosey / CozyFonts Foundry. This font, as all my fonts started with pencil sketches based on the letter O. Once I arrived at the comfortable shape I worked out the C, G, & Q. The H, M, T matched the visual weight and so I moved on to E & S. As the E & S are 2 of the most repeated characters in fonts' I wanted a little bit extra here. The font is obviously heavy weighted yet very legible and almost architectural in presence. There are flashes of Art Deco yet futuristic style. After sketching the feel of this font I was excited by the possibility of the numerals styling. I can see these used for many applications. Why the title Pounder? Why not it seems to fit.

Neubau is a condensed geometric display typeface, designed in 2009. The inspiration for this face came from Joost Schmidt lowercase letters developed during 1925-28 in Bauhaus Dessau. Schmidt was one of the proponents of New Typography – a movement advocating the use of only lowercase letters which were constructed strictly geometrically using only ruler and compass. Neubau Pro is the new edition of Neubau fonts. The new typeface is an upgraded version of an old fonts (2009), with careful refinements to glyph shapes, and the extension of glyph amounts which enabled support of more Latin languages as well as Greek and Cyrillic languages. Neubau Pro is released in six styles with small caps, and true italics, and contains OpenType features. This typeface can be used for editorials and print designs.

Peckham, designed by Daniel Hernández, is a contemporary and versatile slab serif of 8 weights (and matching italics)—ranging from an elegant Thin to a heavy Black—with strong serifs that give it a playful look while preserving the overall geometric structure of the font. Peckham comes with the standard Latinotype set of 395 glyphs resulting in a language support for 94% of the languages using the Latin alphabet. The font also includes stylistic alternates (A, R, Y, a) which provides extra versatility. The name of the font reminds us of the city that witnessed the birth of Vincent Figgins (1766). Arnold Therhoernen. (Arnoldus ther Hornen, Drucker des Dictys , Arnold ter Hoernen, Arnold ther Hoernen, Arnoldus TherHornen.) Who was this guy? He was a printer active in the city of Cologne, having graduating from the university there. He learned his craft under Ulrich Zell. He printed books from 1470 to 1482 when the plague carried him off. Was he just another printer of the era? No, he brought out the first edition of the "Fasciculus temporum'' (The most popular work by a living author at that time.) And he was the first to use both a title page and page numbers. His page numbers, an idea probably suggested to him by Werner Rolevinck, were interesting in that they were centered half way down the page on the outer margin and were set in Roman Numerals.

Lunatica Display is a single weight, all capitals, slanted typeface ideal for titles and headlines due to its strong presence. It is constructed in a very modular fashion, stepping away from some typographic conventions, while keeping the form of its characters familiar and easily recognisable. This typeface is heavily inspired on the aesthetics of the space related sci-fi movie genre, specifically on the movie Moon (2009), directed by Duncan Jones and starring Sam Rockwell, from where it also picks up the inspiration for the name “Lunatica”. It was first designed as a branding exercise, thought to be the official typeface of Lunar Industries Ltd. — the company through wich the movie exists and unfolds. You can use Lunatica Display in more conventional contexts like branding but also in more experimental and futuristic-looking ways.

Jemgonza is a Sans-serif font started on January 26, 2022. This font with hyper-extended character sets allow for usage for billboard signs, logos, and even professional documents and essays. It contains localized forms for certain languages that write them differently. For example: Л and л shaped like upside-down V's, д shaped like a lowercase g, и shaped like a lowercase u, and more for Bulgarian; б shaped like the Greek lowercase letter delta for Macedonian and Serbian. Kewl is the result of being caught in the afterimage of one design project while conceptualizing another one. Just before finishing the final tests on Mrs Blackfort, the first of what became a long series of Charles Bluemlein fonts, some of the letters began morphing differently in my mind. The idea was to go on the heavier and more playful side, but with a South American sign letterer’s twist, rather than just good handwriting. I did some sketching, took some notes, then got busy with other projects. Some of that stuff eventually seeped into Candy Script and, to a lesser extent, the Whomp font. But it was only a matter of time before I got back to the original concept and finished it. Kewl is ideal for food packaging, book and music covers, magazines, and window splashes. The idea behind the font called Chaco originated after testing the deficiency shown in road signs in Latin America. The design began after a long documenting period. Throughout the various stages of the work,  there were several  tests and checks  conducted of the formal solutions implemented which, based on the results, would gradually be changed until we finally reached, in this way, its definite design. The original project for the font features three steps, namely: regular, light and bold, yet by making progress in the development, it was possible for us to perceive that by enlarging the black and thin variances, the family with 5 different weights could offer very good results in mass media, such as newspapers, magazines and television. In order to expand its possibilities of utilization, the set was completed with italics and small capitals.

Porkshop is a font of retro vintage flavor with a hefty dose of immigrant-influenced naive typography. It's fundamentally inspired by an old-but-still-prominent "Pork Shop" sign in Manhattan. I like to think that this font was made by a signmaker's apprentice who didn't yet have a grasp on the subtleties of elegant letterforms, but put his gusto into perfectly sharp serifs. While pointy little serifs are cool, the real shine of this font comes from the imaginative combination of uppercase and lowercase shapes. This unique mixture in the lowercase reminds me of an indeterminate European accent in the big city. Big and strong and easy to understand. Best rendered in 3-foot tall metal type, Porkshop works well in print and on screens, too. The Bolds and Italics are brand new in 2011.

Buddies, designed by Guille Vizzari, is a script font that was initially born as a piece of lettering. It is the result of an experiment between brush pen and pencil, and in this way, Buddies takes the imprint of the brush, the freshness of sign painting, and some (or a lot) of quirks by the author. The font at times enjoys dancing in titles and short lines of text, pouring rhythm and movements through its lowercase various x-height sets. Buddies also has a vast uppercase set with daring and atypical shapes that surprisingly function beautifully for composing short all-caps texts; messages are brought to life with awesome personality, ideal for packaging, fashion or even editorial. Buddies is a friendly font, a humble invitation to the brush letters universe, but from an unpredictable point of view.

From time to time at Tipo Pèpel we like to play like children and get our hands dirty with whatever implement that can be used to mark or draw on the walls, even if the grown-ups don’t like it. And this is more or less what happened with “Trepa” (catalan for “stencil”), a typeface with a fresh and uninhibited appearance, inspired by commercial signs and the 1950’s French art movement “Graphie Latine”. Far removed from the straight lines of vector art, “Trepa” has the necessary roughness to make this class of font stand out and what’s more it has an extensive range of latin characters covering more than 200 languages, and a pair of complementary texture fonts which further multiply its creative possibilities. Xunga is a cheerful display typeface. My goal was to design a font able to fit any layout with boldness and playfulness, mixing a sign painter taste in the uppercase and some of my crappy calligraphic reverse contrast explorations with the flat brush for the lowercase. I designed several of widths to fit the page, and though about a different way of expanding the family shifting the horizontal stress axis to move the letter weight in different heights, making a 15 fonts family, suitable for making bold layouts. The Vtg Stencil fonts from astype are based on real world stencils from several countries. The Italian stencils that I chose as a model for this font are roughly based on classic French stencil letters. Please compare the figures (numbers) with their French counterparts. However, the Italian stencils are made with a different production technique. The design of the letters is clearly not punch-cut into the plates, maybe they are drilled, milled or etched. Details such as the serifs look bold and clumsy, and when using the stencils as they are meant, with viscous sign paint, smaller details easily fade away. So I took my freedom to design a font close to the original design but adding several typographic tweaks to let it shine, hoping to get closer to the intended design idea of these Italian stencils. Stretto (Italian for narrow) is a revival, correction and expansive update of an Aldo Novarese reverse-stress font called Sintex, which he did for VGC in 1973. Openly idiosyncratic and playfully rebellious in its design, this alphabet fuses the straights and rounds in an unusual manner, riffing on the idea of hand-made sign and wood type forms while adhering to its odd grid’s parameters. In spite of its counter-stress, its legibility is high and even, helped by its unicase forms and very distinct counters. First released in 2007, it became quite popular with film studios and nostalgia designers (Sintex was the font used for David Bowie’s Hunky Dory album and Life on Mars? single). A dozen years later we revisited it for an update. Stretto now comes with over 660 characters and includes Pan European language support.

Northstream is a Neo-Grotesque in motion. The typeface was inspired by an attempted photograph of an interesting shop sign that was interrupted by a passing truck. The resulting effect was a blur of movement and designer, Hendrik Weber, wanted to capture that feeling within the typeface. The result is a whirlwind of a design and the shadow behind the letterforms creates a very interesting effect. This typeface is meant for graphic designers to enjoy and play around with, and it is best suited for display text and large sizes such in posters and billboards. Northstream was designed as part of the Font Marathon that was run at the Monotype London office in November 2016. This version is available for free and because of the short time frame is supporting a Basic Latin character set and a few alternates.

Several years ago I was asked to do a sign for a rummage sale. To print the words RUMMAGE SALE, I took letters from some of the ornate fonts I was working on at the time. I liked the results, so made them into a font. Fonts from which the letters come include HippityDippity, Tuskcandy, Letunical, OakPark, WyomingStrudel, NeuAltisch, WyomingMacroni, WyomingPastad, and Rundigsburg. The original typeface had two variants of each letter, one on the upper-case keys and the other on the lower-case keys. The name of the original font, RummageSaleOne, acknowledged that a greater selection of letters was desirable but it was only with the upgrade of 2020 that the greater selection was added. The additional variants were added in two ways: as a separate typeface (RummageSale-Two) and also as OpenType stylistic alternatives.

Santoro Script is a fun, happy script font created in the style of handpainted sign lettering. The first brand-new font added to the Jukebox library since 2011, it displays a jubilant attitude which will add a spontaneous, warm and friendly look to any design. The typeface contains three versions of every letter found under the Swash and Stylistic Alternates OpenType features as well as a few additional letter versions and ligatures under the Titling and Discretionary Ligatures OpenType features. These extra alternates help give the font a hand painted feeling. Jukebox fonts are available in OpenType format and download packages contain both .otf and .ttf versions of the font. Secca Soft is the rounded sister of Secca font family. With its workhorse qualities, Secca Soft is perfectly suited for a wide range of applications - especially where legibility and economy are important factors. As part of the day job I had to trace an old hand drawn logo of a Masonic Lodge from a very poor scan. When I finally got to the end of it I had almost a whole alphabet and I really liked the hand drawn uneven quality, so I made up the rest of the letters and set about making it into a font. I roughened up all the edges for an even older look, added a host of OpenType features and hey presto, Masonic Lodge was born. There are two versions of each letter and number which automatically alternate when contextual alternates are set, more alternates for O and o characters, a good amount of interlock style L and T ligatures (uppercase) and a square & compass ornament. Use it for pub signs, secret society meetings, monster movie titles and pub menus.

Odelette is a modern calligraphic script. This font is casual and pretty with a sweeping look. Odelette features alternative OpenType styles, ligatures and International support for most Western languages included. To enable alternative OpenType Stylistic, you need a program that supports OpenType features like Adobe Illustrator CS, Adobe Indesign & CorelDraw X6-X7, Microsoft Word 2010 or later. Odelette Script is encoded with PUA Unicode, which allows full access to all additional characters without having any special design software. The typeface is inspired by our love of old hand-painted signs in butchers, and based on some very quick sketches using a brush pen to find what shapes worked. There is quite a quirky element to the type, as we tried to create the original sketches by rotating the brush pen to reflect the strokes of a paint brush. This lead to a horizontal stressing, which is most noticeable in letters like C, G, S and J. Sidestroke comes in 2 styles, both a standard solid version, and a pre-shadowed outline version. This can be outlined and divided in Illustrator to quickly create an alternate coloured fill for your letters. The lowercase letters have been designed to automatically horizontally align with any uppercase letters, which is a great shortcut when creating logos or other unique type layouts.
