The best way to radicalize your typographic expression is to use Blackletter! Gothic calligraphy had been used throughout all historical periods without much of the principal development the Latin typefaces underwent. However, since the invention of movable type, even now its slight variations over time can be seen. Blackletters are always used where emotions are required, be it spiritual literature, romantic novels, decadent poetry or extreme music. Dracula is a typeface dedicated to classical horror. I started to draw its letters along with my illustrations for Argo publishers in spring 2017. I needed a specific typeface for book cover and chapter titles to emphasize the mysterious atmosphere of the text. Sharp teeth and claws on a thin blackletter skeleton shall remind of the early vampirism in literature. Its slightly narrowed face enhances a thrilling feel of anguish and despair, whereas the darkest cut may work well on funeral announcements.

Aptifer Sans and Aptifer Slab are two 21st century typeface families created by Mårten Thavenius. Each family has seven weights, in roman and italic respectively, making 28 font styles in total. A heritage from two design traditions can be seen in Aptifer. One is the robust American gothic typefaces, like M. F. Benton’s, from around 1900. This is combined with the openness and legibility that comes from the humanist tradition. The sans serif part of the family, Aptifer Sans, is designed without excessive details disturbing the reading. Its sibling, Aptifer Slab, with its wedge slab serifs is more eye-catching but still suited for text settings. The italics fit well into the text flow of the roman. They are a bit narrower than the roman and have cursive characteristics. Both Aptifer Sans and Aptifer Slab are highly legible typefaces and can be used both in print and on screen.

Between twilight and daybreak it is said that the dark side of the human psyche eclipses the sun that shines from the depths of our souls. Certainty turns to doubt, clarity becomes confusion, man turns into wolf, the dead wake, vampires seduce the young are restless and milk boils over on the stove. Those that seek only to bathe in the light of a romantic new moon often end their tragic lives soaked in nothing other than their own blood, and the milk spilt on the stovetop has no one left to cry over it. There are fifty shades of grey during those hours after sunset and I think just as many in my porridge this morning. Yes, okay, I admit it, I spoiled the milk! This porridge tastes like it was left in a graveyard overnight. Death warmed over. Gothic and lumpy. Just like the Buried weights of this font.

Philip Bouwsma returns with yet another great manifestation of historical calligraphy. Luminari is an amalgam of High Middle Ages writing, a blend that combines the ornate Church hands with the simple Carolingian from the ninth to the fifteenth centuries. Its majuscules are particularly influenced by the versals found in the famous Monmouth psalters, as well as those done by the Ramsey Abbey abbots in the twelfth century. The minuscules also exhibit some influence from the book hand of prolific humanist Poggio Bracciolini from the early fifteenth century. Italian and essentially romanesque in style, Luminari exercises a slight tension between the round forms and the angular “gothic” styling. Luminari was updated with plenty of alternates and expanded language support in 2012. It now supports a very wide range of codepages, including Cyrillic, Greek, Central and Eastern European, Turkish, Baltic, Vietnamese, and of course Celtic/Welsh.

CA Oskar came into being as a custom typeface for the international Traumzeit music festival. As a substantial part of the new corporate identity, it had to be characteristic, but also flexible in use. Starting with the design of compressed caps for headlines, the typeface was soon expanded by a condensed weight for setting of text and further developed into a fully functional font with two widths and two weights. Both weights are very space-efficient, which was -- apart from aesthetic considerations -- an important issue in the process of the design. CA Oskar is a mixture of industrial harshness and friendly round forms, reflecting the spirit of fusion, which is basically what the whole festival is about. Its very slim proportions in two widths make it an attractive alternative to fonts like Alternate Gothic, but CA Oskar adds an extra portion of personality and a coherent choice of weights.

Scripta is a family of typefaces that leads "Scripta Pro", a commercial script writing similar to those used in ads advertising the decades 40 and 50, with fine lettering combinations of that time, Scripta Pro is ideal for composing headlines and subheads and this is supplied in two weights. This system is complemented by a Roman Sans "Scripta Gothic" an artdeco style typeface to harmonize with the style of that fonts. Lapture is based on the Leipziger Antiqua by Albert Kapr, released in 1971 by the East German foundry Typoart. It has been extended and carefully redesigned by Tim Ahrens in 2002-05. The strong calligraphic characteristics are a result of the design process: "The size of the counters and the width of individual characters at small optical sizes were analysed with a steel pen while the letter shapes were designed in larger size with a specially trimmed reed pen. Sometimes the hand is more innovative than the head alone," says Kapr. A unique feature of this font is the introduction of gothic shapes into a latin typeface. "The basic concept is to string together narrow white hexagons as counters and inter-letter spaces, defined by vertical stems and triangular serifs. The interior spaces are at least as important as the strokes that make up the characters." Lapture is an ideal choice if a reference to gothic style is desired, as true black letter types are often too eye-catching and not as legible as latin fonts for unfamiliar readers. "The last few years have seen a number of very elegant typefaces based on the mellow and feminine renaissance model. However, sometimes we require a font that is strong and robust, harmonic yet rigid," says designer Tim Ahrens. JAF Lapture is provided in OpenType format. Each font contains more than 600 glyphs, including true small caps, nine sorts of figures, contextual and stylistic alternates and accented characters. This means that you only need to purchase one font whereas in other families you would have to buy two or three fonts in order to get the same. Technically, they follow the Adobe Pro fonts and provide the same glyph set and OpenType functionality. JAF Lapture Basic is provided in OpenType format. Each font contains the standard sets of both MacOS and Windows. In contrast to JAF Lapture they do not provide any advanced OpenType features and no extended glyph set.

Arzachel is a humanistic sanserif with a big x-height and a specific organic look. Its design is scientifically sharp and efficient in small type sizes as well as rugged and dramatic in headlines. Arzachel’s essential feeling comes from several features: all the letters are slightly sloped, stem terminations are flared at the top, and the terminals in letters a, c, e, f… are widening with the inside parts completely flat. The stroke contrast is low in the regular weight while it increases in the black; finally the capitals have an inscriptional flavor. Despite being a sanserif (thus a product of recent typography) Arzachel’s roots stretch back to the Renaissance tradition: Olocco took inspiration from some of the early and rather weird types cut in Venice in the 15th century. Arzachel was conceived during Olocco’s MA in Reading to provide a companion for his Zenon for use in small type sizes. But instead of expanding the Zenon family with optical sizes, the designer decided on a sans with its own personality rather than a sanserif version of Zenon with chopped-off serifs.

Malou Verlomme designed Madera with graphic designers in mind – drawing on his decade of experience designing bespoke type to create a versatile, easy-to-use geometric sans serif that ticks off a long list of branding requirements. Its sharp apexes add some flavour to the design, which offers an honest, trustworthy tone of voice – but with a twist. “The design doesn’t go out of its way to attract attention, but is still very solid,” explains Verlomme. “It still has a fair amount of warmth and personality, in a very understated manner. If you’re a large corporation, with a typeface being used in many different environments, you want something that’s easy to use but can sustain such a large amount of visibility.” The Madera typeface family has 32 fonts: Upright, Condensed and Italics. Each typeface contains over 650 glyphs with extensive Western, Central and Eastern European language support. It also supports OpenType typographic features like alternatives, ligatures and fractions. Clocko automatically turns the time stamp text into an analog clocks using the OpenType ligatures. Even when the ligatures are turned off, the time is still visible and readable, and it does not change or ruin the layout. Perfect for web usage and even for small sizes. For a crisp look, please use sizes divisible by 30, for example 30pt or 60pt. To make a custom analog clock, type any uppercase or lowercase letter to have a border (see previews for examples), and then type the time in 12 hour or 24 hour format with or without seconds. Use colon, comma, semicolon, hyphen, period or plus as a separator. Broadside is a versatile, authoritative and functional family inspired by the sans serifs seen on ’40s and ’50s patriotic posters and period advertising. It is available in seven weights across condensed, normal and extended widths, each with reweighed italics. The type from this period was very often hand-drawn, and so differs considerably from poster to poster. Many American examples of this period use a Photo-Lettering style called Murray Hill and its derivatives, although their UK counterparts, designed by such luminaries as Abram Games or Tom Eckersley, are more stylistically diverse. Even though no single model is available to base a digitisation on, there are certain recurring stylistic quirks that give the type its unique flavour, and so the most interesting examples from several sources were be combined for the final family. Alternate short descenders, allowing for tighter line spacing, can be toggled on or off in the Opentype panel of Indesign or Illustrator. Tabular and lining numerals and a single-story ‘a’ are also available in all weights and styles.

German type designer Ingo Preuss created this family between 2014 and 2016. Instance is a new classic built on the foundation of over two centuries of history. Fresh and contemporary, while feeling familiar. This typeface is a high contrast sans serif typeface family and was designed for contemporary typography, especially for use in headlines and on posters, but also for reading purposes. A flexible, medium to high contrast, sans serif less about designing a stylish decorative design and more about applying contrast onto a neo-grotesk skeleton. Instance is more than just chopping off the serifs. The classical proportions of the capitals and x-heights were maintained, but the letterforms were rebalanced for use without serifs. Contemporary modifications were made to some widths, as well as an all new Light weight was created. Please note: Instance STD Office Packages is only as TrueType (* .ttf) and Standard-Version. A variation of ”Helvetica according to the blur principle.“ The underlying typeface is ”Helvetica“, the only true ”run-of-the-mill“ typeface of the twentieth century. The distortion principle used simulates the photographic effect of halation and/or overexposure. The light weight, »DeFonte Léger«, nearly breaks on the thin points, whereas on those points where the lines meet or cross, dark spots remain. The characters are ”nibbled at“ from the inner and outer brightness. On the normal and semibold typestyles, »DeFonte Normale« and »DeFonte Demi Gras«, the effect is limited almost exclusively to the end strokes and corners, which appears to be strongly rounded off. The bold version »DeFonte Gros« is especially attractive. As a result of ”overexposure“, counters (internal spaces) are closed in, while characters become blurred and turn into spots; new characteristic forms are created which are astoundingly legible. The fat version »DeFonte Gros« is particularly appealing. “Overexposure” leads to drifted counters, letters blur into spots; new characteristic forms emerge, which are surprisingly easy to read.

Home Style is a revival of a very old font previously thought to have been designed by Joseph Gillé in or around the year 1820, however recent evidence from France suggests that an artist by the name of Silvestre from the same time period may be the true designer of this font. You may have seen this font in the past under the names of Circus, Roma, Madame and Gillé Classic. Originally designed in France, this very decorative font was only available in uppercase including numbers. Today this font has been re-mastered and updated with the addition of a newly designed lowercase set of letters. Home Style with its diagonal or cast shadow lines breaks away from the original design which has squared off shadows. If you're looking for the original version of this font please refer to the FontMesa version named Maison Luxe. New in 2016 for Home Style is an uppercase German Double S (versal eszett), opentype features including case sensitive forms and old style numerals.

Mr. Jenkins is designed to fill the void between the crazy, wacky and reckless comic style fonts, and the standard boring but very readable sans-serif typefaces. It makes for a distinctive bold headline, but is also quite legible at small sizes. It’s just off kilter enough to not take itself too seriously. A deceptively care-free font, each character was carefully drawn. The spacing and kerning of each letter and letter combination were painstakingly considered. Particular attention was paid to maintaining consistent optical weights and a spontaneous appearance. Mr. Jenkins is inspired heavily by humanist sans-serif faces such as Myriad and Lucida Sans, with its open apertures, and low contrast but almost calligraphic line weights. The lowercase a is single story in the italic face, but two story in the regular face. It contains uncommon features amongst many “quirky” fonts, including a full set of latin accented characters, lining and proportional figures, math symbols, standard fractions, foreign currency marks, contextual alternates, and even a few ligatures.

Eggad features letters on eggs. It can be a fun font to use at Easter or for any egg-related message. Some of the eggs - those on the upper-case keys - have their large end on the bottom and others - those on the lower-case keys - have their large end on the top. The font uses the contextual alternatives feature of OpenType to alternate the big-bottom and big-top eggs. If you only want eggs with big tops or with big bottoms, turn this feature off. Eggad comes in two styles, a regular style in which the eggs are outlined and a bold style in which the eggs are solid. Both are monospaced. The two styles can be layered to color the eggs. Alternatively, background color can be added (dot accent and ring characters) or the outline color can be changed (sterling and yen characters) using layers in the regular style. If you are typing numbers and you want the start to be big-bottom number, switch on OpenType style set 1.

Treatise was born in a notebook at the back of a boring lecture on immunology with the simple thought of “How can I make a serif more fun?” When writing a scientific treatise, there are not many options for making it enjoyable. However, some little quirks and fun features in the font can take the serious edge off the writing.... Treatise is a light and open serif with some design quirks, which give it a slightly calligraphic feel; a single -storey “a” and “g,” a visible stroke mark on the “o,” and a curved arm on the “k.” These features are subtle enough to fit into a paragraph of text but bold enough to give a title some character. The Treatise family includes a true italic and a heavy-struck style bold, and several OpenType features; standard and discretional ligatures, contextual alternatives, and different figure styles. The character coverage includes Basic Latin, Latin-1 Supplement, and Latin Extended-A and will support most Latin-alphabet languages, including languages with more exotic characters such as Icelandic and Maltese.

Compita is a Neo-Grotesk(ish) typeface that started life as a love-letter to Berthold's classic. But for every rigid, Neue-Haasism, there exists an equal and opposite amount of humanist attributes – along with a deliberate dose of creative license. It has some over-emphasised features and terminal endings which help to create its friendly personality, but sits them on a slightly condensed overall width. With its slightly rough edges, Thumbnail Text works well where lettering is required. Letterforms wiggle a bit here and there but are generally quite uniform. Characters are a bit imprecise - but not showy or bouncy. They appear more adult-looking than childish and are very legible. Put Thumbnail Text to work as drafting notation or on blueprint projects that need to be easily read. It¹s also useful when concept or sketch stage lettering needs to look serious but not highly stylized. You might experiment with it inside cartoon thought balloons or in callouts. This design is based on an old showcard style from the 1940s. It's been dusted off and reissued for modern use. A lowercase has been added for greater functionality. Thumbnail Text Regular is now available in the OpenType Std format. Some additional characters have been added to this OpenType version as stylistic alternates. This advanced feature works in current versions of Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress. HD Anomie is a modern geometric sans built in 18 styles with variable support and is brought to you by HyperDeluxe®. Inspired by both by Arabic calligraphy, and contemporary bitmap design, Bachir Soussi Chiadmi created this playful series of faces. Letters in each of the six typefaces link together, but not in the ways normally expected from script fonts. Suited for a wide array of fun functions, Bousni Carre and Bousni Ronde (each available in Light, Medium, and Bold weights) bring new a style and flavor to your collection. All six fonts in the Bousni family are included in the Take Type 5 collection from Linotype GmbH. The Bousni family espouses similar construction traits with other fonts from Linotype. Specifically, the straight lines and joints in the three Bousni Carre fonts are based off of a grid system similar to Anlinear, another member of the Take Type 5 collection from Linotype GmbH. Our Bazaruto family was inspired by an old fashioned specimen from “Letters and Lettering” by Carlyle & Oring, but you'll find the inspiration has been greatly expounded upon. What began as an all Capitals specimen has been fleshed out to an extended full character set with many features and variants from the original design. Bazaruto has been an exercise in typographic evolution. The original Art Deco style spawned an Engraved version, then a Bodoni-esque text style, and then a monoline version of that text style (both of the latter complete with Obliques). But after that is when the real interpretations of form began with the development of the Iron fonts, playing off the original specimen having a visual flavor of wrought ironwork in them, and blending that into the Bodoni-esque typestyles. Lastly, a fast and loose hand drawn version of the Iron fonts and an ornaments font were created to add more variety and spunk to the family. The Bazaruto family is a visual grab bag of styles which all have an underlying harmony.

It started with an italic, or to be more precise, half an italic. The slanted styles of Urge Text exhibit a certain bipolarity, the tops of glyphs having a standard italic form, the bottoms of glyphs being more Roman in their construction. This sturdy footing really locks the italics to the baseline, making them very legible while still being distinct from the uprights. The same bipolar approach didn't work very well in upright styles, so the Romans are more toned down. Ranging from the almost monoline, Egyptian style light weights to higher contrast ‘Modern’ bolds, there is much potential for use in typographically demanding scenarios. The family consists of six weights, normal and condensed widths, all with italics, making a total of 24 fonts; it’s a highly usable text typeface with an array of OpenType features. All styles include small caps, multiple figure styles (proportional- and tabular-, oldstyle and lining, small cap proportional figures, numerators, denominators, superscript and subscript), standard ligatures, alternate forms (stylistic sets), automatic fractions, case sensitive forms, and a handy (perhaps!) ‘percent off’ ligature in the discretionary ligatures feature.

Bodoni Sans is a new classic built on the foundation of two centuries of history. Fresh and contemporary, while feeling familiar. Stylish and sophisticated, confident and elegant. Bodoni Sans is more than just chopping off the serifs. The classical proportions of the capitals and x-heights were maintained, but the letterforms were rebalanced for use without serifs. Contemporary modifications were made to some widths, as well as an all new Light weight was created. High contrast is the key feature of Bodoni Sans. To maintain this contrast over a wide range of sizes, three optical sizes were drawn: Standard, Display and Text. Contrast adjustments were made for each optical size for optimal performance. The Standard was designed for the mid range of 12 to 60pt, Display for 48pt and above, and Text for 6 to 12pt. Web/Digital use was also considered while developing Bodoni Sans. The fonts were tested as web formats, and examined on a variety of screens, to ensure seamless use in both print and digital applications.

Argentinean designer Eduardo Manso created the Bohemia type family in 2003. Bohemia's cunning and elegant essence shows off refined letters that evoke the Transitional style typefaces like Baskerville, though most Baskerville-like designs tend not to be as curvaceous as Manso's! True to form, Bohemia shines in smaller text sizes, like 9 point and above, while still maintaining a unique character and spirit. Bohemia is a great alternative to better-known text faces. The critics have been raving. Bohemia came to Linotype via its fourth International Type Design Contest (ITDC) [Link] in 2003, where it received one of the three top awards. Under the name Argot, this typeface received a Certificate of Excellence in Type Design from the Type Directors Club of New York in 2004. Bohemia was also selected for inclusion in the 21st International Biennale of Graphic Design 2004 in Brno, Czech Republic, and was later named one of the most relevant works in the Bienal Letras Latinas 2004 exhibition, which traveled through Buenos Aires, San Paolo, Santiago, and Vera Cruz."

Rawhide is a fresh digitization and expansion of a very popular (yet uncredited) early 1970s film type called Yippie, which was commonly used in wild west cartoons and comics. Publishers of Lucky Luke, the famous Belgian comic by Morris, used these bouncy letters for the titling on a few of their soft cover editions, and different variations of it were used throughout the 1970s and 1980s by cartoon classic Looney Tunes and a variety of wild west animations and comics. It slowly disappeared without fanfare when desktop publishing became the norm. Here it is again now for the computer age, available as a high quality font with a complete character set that accommodates more than 20 Latin-based languages. In short, Rawhide comes with an impressive track record, and is a must for any funny cowboy design or off the wall wild west layout. This set of fonts contains a very expanded character set that includes full support for Central, Eastern and Western European languages, as well as Baltic, Turkish, Esperanto, Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese.

Island Life is a font inspired by the loose, wavy style of the type associated with 1970s surf culture. Often found on lo-fi surf movie posters, t-shirts, and decals, it’s an aesthetic that promotes a laid-back, summer-loving style. With a zen “be like water” approach, this font has no straight edges.
