In the late 1990s Gerard Unger won the assignment to design the signage system for the Holy Year celebrations to be held in Rome in 2000. The system he developed in cooperation with the design agency n|p|k used a classically inspired serif typeface, but the earlier proposals included a sans-serif, which became Vesta (2001). Vesta is a versatile family that can be used as a display face alongside Unger's serif faces Gulliver, Capitolium or Coranto; it can also be used on its own, even in longer texts. Vesta is narrower and therefore more economical than some commonly used sans serifs such as Arial and Helvetica; there is also a noticeable contrast between thick and thin parts, which makes it more lively. Vesta is to be extended with narrow versions, small capitals and old style numerals, along with some special versions for headlines.

Some typefaces are more deserving of the reference "original typeface design" than are others. Such a typeface is Steve's Safefont GD. Raljon is a display typeface created by designer and lettering artist Mark Robinson. It is a collaboration between the Mmarkk and Teen-Beat Graphica visual design studios. This single font was created over a period of five years. Mark took great care in finessing each character and making sure that each character would stand on its own and yet simultaneously, be an integral part of the whole. The typeface is inspired by Gothic letterforms, horror novels, speed metal bands of the 1980s, techno and electronic music of the 1990s, and Washington, DC football teams whose stadiums lie in the Maryland suburbs. While it doesn’t have multiple weights, Raljon does have a deep depth and breadth. It has a seemingly endless amount of alternate characters and ligatures. There are nine letter Ms, eight letter As and Fs, seven Rs and Ts, and the list goes on. Even the figures have alternates.

Inspired by the strange, blocky lettering on the sides of a set of a set of plastic kitchen containers in my childhood home, 8th Avenue is a sophisticated, somewhat syncopated font with a retro look and feel that at the same time brings a very modern attitude to your design. 8th Avenue works well as display font for packaging, headlines and logos. Those pastel turquoise plastic boxes from the early 1950s, with white screen printed letters reading FLOUR, SUGAR, COFFEE etc. on one side were a simple quiet presence in our home back then and for decades after. Seeing them, even that soft blue-green colour felt like home. SUGAR, the soul survivor of that set has become one of those mundane items of daily life that somehow become simple icons of another time, ripe with memories. Obviously I had to make a font. Up until the late 1920s, it was a popular habit in American songwriting to use African Americans as the topic of compositions using denigrating themes, words and even exaggerated character illustrations on the covers of the published sheet music. One such example of what was considered "entertainment" for its time was a piece entitled "Little Black Me". While this now socially and morally unacceptable piece of forgettable tripe is collected by some only for the historical documentation of the times they reflected, one good "positive" came out of this negative chapter of our country's musical heritage: The beautiful floral ornamented letters in the song's title has yielded Fancy Free JNL. Originally hand-lettered on an arc, these spurred Roman letters have been re-drawn, and are offered in both the regular design and a companion version with the ornamentation removed for lettering that is less ornate.

Trade Gothic Next is Akira Kobayashi's 2008 revision of Jackson Burke's 1948 design. Developed over many years, the original Trade Gothic was filled with many inconsistencies. Under the direction of Akira Kobayashi, Linotype's Type Director, the american type designer Tom Grace, a graduate of the MA Typeface Design in Reading, was commissioned to redesign, revise, and expand the Trade Gothic family. Kobayashi and Grace refined many details such as the terminals and stroke endings, symbols, and the spacing and kerning. Moreover, there are newly added compressed widths and heavy weights perfect for setting even more powerful headlines. The Regular weight has been beefed up making it stronger and more robust in text settings. Trade Gothic is a staple of the advertising and newspaper industries, and now Trade Gothic Next brings more features and better quality for today's astute typographers. In addition several weights are available as soft rounded versions.

Garuda typeface, featuring the shape and style based on "Garuda Pancasila", the state symbol of the Republic of Indonesia. Garuda is a mythical bird in the Javanese puppet stories, is very similar to the eagle. At the typeface we can find more ligatures beside than the standard. Within Garuda at least encoded 792 glyphs per weight onto major codepage: win 1252, 1250, 1254, 1257 including Mac OS Roman. It is containing more OpenType features such as swash, contextual alternate, stylistic, figures/number, and a few bit ornaments. The typeface has a pretty good readability and legibility even in small sizes. So it is useful for short texts (text length? Whom fear) for print and screen material. Grrr is a headstrong modular display typeface with a large amount of alternative glyphs. It consists of eight weights ranging from Thin to Black. A variable font is also available. The typeface is designed on a modular grid and it proudly ignores the rules of optical compensations: the horizontal and vertical strokes have identical thickness, and round and triangular letters have no overshoots at all! All these peculiarities are making the typeface usable at sizes from 21pt and larger in print and approximately from 24px on non-retina screens. Grrr is especially good at extremely large sizes. The typeface includes three stylistic sets with even more bizarre letterforms. These sets activate a cyclic pseudorandom substitution of letters from a range of alternates — the letterforms keep changing as you type!
