This type of Richard Gans, has always seemed very striking, despite having the complexity of the sources extrusion, has its own personality, and readability unusual for this type of letters. Use it for composing posters, programs or logos was very common at the time. My father, Antonio Lage Parapar, typographer by profession, who composed the texts, which not only had it for profession, but he liked to do, always he spoke of sources and decorative elements of the type foundry Richard Gans, as well as other foundries, especially those that required the mender of them, exercised creator, many of these types they have already been recovered by professionals and companies with excellent results. I've been surrounded by these movable type, and the occasional catalog unfortunately lost. One of those guys that has always struck me visually speaking was the type IMAN Richard Gans, the typographer and more of German origin arrived in Spain, back in 1874, also a pioneer. This work to revive the type mentioned, as well as create non existing glyphs between documents and parts I've been finding, is and has been a personal pleasure all I want serve as a tribute to my father (of aopodo curiously "Richard"), the only sadness it has not been completed. Richard Gans, arrived in Spain in 1874 as a representative of several European factories. then liaised with journalistic and publishing companies, which led him knowledge required of the first sector art. In 1878 he created a center importer gadgets graphic arts and three years later he created his own type foundry. The first rotary newspaper ABC, very famous and the most advanced of the time, the brand manufactured Richard Gans.

With the publication of the “Today Sans Now” Elsner+Flake extends its offering of the “Today Sans Serif” type family, developed in 1988 by Volker Küster for Scangraphic, by another cut so that the gradation of the stroke width can now be more finely calibrated. The type complement is available for 72 Latin-based languages as well as Cyrillic. Where available, small caps were integrated, and mathematical symbols as well as fractions were included. In order to make the symbols for text applications in regard to headlines more flexible, the insertions which were formerly added, for technical reasons in order to sharpen the corners, were eliminated, and the optical size adjustments of the vertical and diagonal stem endings (I, v, H, V) to the horizontal bars (z, Z) were scaled back. Already since the end of 1984, Volker Küster experimented with broad sticks of chalk and a broad felt pen in order to develop a new sans serif typeface which, in the interest of easy legibility, would be built on the basic structures and proportions of the Renaissance-Antiqua. Using a normal angle of writing, his experiments lead to the form structure of the characters: a small contrast between bold and light weights, serif-like beginning and end strokes in some of the lower-case characters, and the typical, left-leaning slant of all round lower-case letters and the typical left-leaning axis of all round letter forms. In this way, a rhythmization of a line of type was achieved which created a lively image without being “noisy”. With this concept, Volker Küster has enlarged the Sans Serif by a distinctive, trend-setting form variation.

Kake’s upper case letters are inspired by a hand-painted sign outside a temple in Ubud, Bali. The rest of the font is made to fit the style. The hand-made aesthetic is increased by the implementation of contextual alternates, which automatically swap glyphs to alternate forms to avoid the monotony of repeating letters. The amount of variations for each glyph is dependent on letter frequency in English; there are more a’s and e’s than q’s and j’s. Even with only two variations of some glyphs, the programming makes sure that no two matching glyphs are ever next to eachother, and for the most part they will rarely be even two letters apart. This all makes for type that looks like it isn't type. The glyphs bounce and subtly change weight with willful abandon. Some of the letters on that original sign are somewhat quirky. If you're not a fan you can engage stylistic alternates or stylistic sets to change the C, G, S, Y, c, s and y glyphs to a less idiosyncratic form. These variations still have variations themselves, so with contextual alternates on, they will look as random as all the rest. Case sensitive forms and automatic fractions are included, as are 98 ornaments, ranging from the useful to the (let’s just say) esoteric. These can be accessed from the glyph palette. I know you've probably never realized you need an anchor, a fuel pump, skull and crossbones and chess symbols in the same font before, but that doesn't mean you don't! Kake is full on display typography. It’s legible for small blocks of copy but don't go setting essays in it. Unless you really want to... in which case, go for it.

Kewl is the result of being caught in the afterimage of one design project while conceptualizing another one. Just before finishing the final tests on Mrs Blackfort, the first of what became a long series of Charles Bluemlein fonts, some of the letters began morphing differently in my mind. The idea was to go on the heavier and more playful side, but with a South American sign letterer’s twist, rather than just good handwriting. I did some sketching, took some notes, then got busy with other projects. Some of that stuff eventually seeped into Candy Script and, to a lesser extent, the Whomp font. But it was only a matter of time before I got back to the original concept and finished it. Kewl is ideal for food packaging, book and music covers, magazines, and window splashes. Duct tape is one of the most versatile adhesive materials known today. From fixing the bumper of your car that keeps falling off, to creating a sturdy wallet. From alternative wrapping to sticking a friend to the wall, Duct tape is there. And it will stay there. It will stick to anything and hold for a very darn long time too! The cloth-backed tape was invented some time during World War II, and also proved itself useful as a base material for lettering. VLNL Duct was originally designed by DBXL as a logo for temporary Amsterdam restaurant BAUT. DBXL imagined an owner taping the name on the window of his shop using Duct tape. One would think the whole hippy thing would have died out after the knighting of Mick Jagger and the selling out of the The Who. Not at Canada Type. We still occasionally read Burroughs and Ginsberg, listen to Dylan and Hendrix, and use the backyard to pretend (um, like run barefoot with the dog). And we're always happy to make another psychedelic font. This one is based on an early 1970s film type that went by the names Hoopla and Scorpio. Doobie is a typical hippy font that uses the simplest elements of the art nouveau genre. Bubbly and wavy, Doobie exudes an almost child-like innocence, the ever laid back, optimistic simplicity of flower power. It is right at home alongside the many other psychedelic fonts that make Canada Type the definite home of the groovy alphabet. Far out!

I was in a bit of a gloomy mood just before I created this font. I had no inspiration whatsoever (which always affects me in a bad way). I was trying to create a font using broken satay skewers, as using those gives the letters a unique look. I broke about 25 skewers and they all broke ‘the wrong way’. Yes, it’s pathetic, I know, but that’s how it is. I decided to go to the gym and do a little workout, hoping my dark mood would pass. When I came back, I broke one more skewer and lo and behold, it broke exactly the right way! I made this font in one go, using that fantastic skewer and lots of Chinese ink. Darkness Rising comes with all the diacritics you’ll need, plus double letter ligatures and some cool underlined alternates.

SL Che is a homage to Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, “El Che”, who lived between 1928 and 1967. It was that way he became a synonymous of resistance, revolution and change for lots of generations. That "Che" comes back today by the hand of the genial Jorge Alderete, who designed heroic, laughing and cool variations of that popular first icon. Back in 2017, I was working on a cutout font that I originally wanted to call Scissor Madness. In the end, I named it Cut Along and it was quite a popular font for a while. This week I decided to clean up my fonts folder a bit (as I usually have tons of unfinished fonts lurking in there) and I found a file named Scissor Madness. It was the original try-out for Cut Along. It contained a couple of nice glyphs that I never used, so I started playing around with them and after a day, I had a whole new font! So, in short, Scissor Madness was partly cut out by hand, partly computer made, but it is 100% fun to use! Scissor Madness comes with a bunch of very cute discretionary ligatures.

Since the 1800s, many patents were issued for methods to hold papers together. The two most popular and enduring tools still in use today are the stapler and the paper clip. In recent times a number of clips in novelty shapes have been available in just about every size, shape and color imaginable. Back in the beginning there were many variations as well, but the purpose of these design variants was to try and command the majority of sales in the fledgling market of bent wire clips by offering a unique and hopefully better product. Fastenating JNL contains twenty-five images based on those early clip designs as well as one classic paper fastener (on the Z and z keys). The standard gem clip has been the most enduring design and is well over one hundred years old.

Rough-hewn industrial geometric typefaces have been used and admired from early wood types through the digital age of Machine and beyond, but they have lacked an expansive enough family to become a true workhorse. 1st Ave is the most experimental of my typefaces. I took a picture of a metal and neon sign in the East Village of New York City. These signs are slowly being replaced by LED and LCD displays, but if you look hard, you can still find quite a few in the city. The signs give a mid 20th century feel to the city. To design 1st Ave, I took a picture of the sign, scanned it and increased the contrast in Photoshop so that the photographic forms became line art. There weren't enough letterforms in the sign to create the whole alphabet, so I cut up the strokes and collaged them back together to finish the entire alphabet. Important Note: 1st Ave is an experimental typeface and is not compatible with certain software such as Microsoft Word.

Zest is an informal brush script drawn with quick, thick brush strokes. While it is based on everyday handwriting, the expansive and easy flow of the script hides the care that has been given to the crafting of each character. In style it harks back to the hey-day of American lettering and calligraphy, yet it has a looseness that is thoroughly modern. Zest comes in three styles: -- Zest-Medium, which is medium-weighted and appropriate to a wide range of applications; -- Zest-Drama, in which the contrast between the the thicker and thinner parts of a brushstroke has been dramatically enhanced; and -- Zest Bezel, in which the brush strokes have been given a contemporary, square-cut appearance.
