With the publication of the “Today Sans Now” Elsner+Flake extends its offering of the “Today Sans Serif” type family, developed in 1988 by Volker Küster for Scangraphic, by another cut so that the gradation of the stroke width can now be more finely calibrated. The type complement is available for 72 Latin-based languages as well as Cyrillic. Where available, small caps were integrated, and mathematical symbols as well as fractions were included. In order to make the symbols for text applications in regard to headlines more flexible, the insertions which were formerly added, for technical reasons in order to sharpen the corners, were eliminated, and the optical size adjustments of the vertical and diagonal stem endings (I, v, H, V) to the horizontal bars (z, Z) were scaled back. Already since the end of 1984, Volker Küster experimented with broad sticks of chalk and a broad felt pen in order to develop a new sans serif typeface which, in the interest of easy legibility, would be built on the basic structures and proportions of the Renaissance-Antiqua. Using a normal angle of writing, his experiments lead to the form structure of the characters: a small contrast between bold and light weights, serif-like beginning and end strokes in some of the lower-case characters, and the typical, left-leaning slant of all round lower-case letters and the typical left-leaning axis of all round letter forms. In this way, a rhythmization of a line of type was achieved which created a lively image without being “noisy”. With this concept, Volker Küster has enlarged the Sans Serif by a distinctive, trend-setting form variation.

A contemporary slab-serif which revisits aspects of Robert Besley’s all-time classic Clarendon, designed around 1842 for Thorowgood and Co. and named after the Clarendon Press in Oxford. The original design was subsequently extended by Sheffield foundry Stephenson Blake in the 1950s into a widely-used, robust workhorse family. Albiona uses the inwardly curved stroke terminals of the same foundry’s Grotesque series, while rationalising or removing entirely Clarendon’s ball serifs, flicked tails and other eccentricities to make it more functional in contemporary settings. The family consists of five weights plus italics and a stencil, and includes oldstyle and tabular numerals. Its clean readable style suits both text and headline setting.

June was first published in 2019 but it got a redesign and upgrade in the character set. It now supports Latin Extended and Vietnamese. June Pro was inspired by the work of Adrian Frutiger and his exploration into font design and legibility. Though Zigarre can easily be categorized a brush script, Jim Rimmer actually drew it using a big marker. Jim’s original face, inspired by inter-war German poster lettering, was a rough one, with the marker’s juicy ink roughing it out all over the place. The smooth version, Zigarre Script, was produced as part of a major update and remastering the design underwent in 2012. Both Zigarre Script and Zigarre Rough come with extended Latin language support, as well as a few built-in stylistic alternates. 20% of this font’s revenues will be donated to a GDC scholarship fund, supporting higher typography education in Canada.

Grafika is a completely original design, done in an “Art Deco” spirit reminiscent of the 1920s and ‘30s. I designed Grafika many years ago to be typeset for title cards, and both opening and end credits for the Merchant/Ivory feature film “Savages”. After the film, the design languished in my archives until I rediscovered it. I have digitally redrawn Grafika, completing it with all the alternates, ligatures, math, foreign accented characters and punctuation that weren’t required of the original design for film. Grafika is strongest when set in upper and lowercase—its unique caps extending below the baseline—although all caps settings are encouraged as well.

Jure Stojan first created JY Klin for a student magazine in Ljubljana, Slovenia. ‘It was borne out of my frustration with layout [programs] and their taste for messing with decent fonts (making the headline occupy the entire column width at any cost, for instance). Therefore, I designed a “heavy duty” display font—it can be extended up to 120 per cent without any loss in quality (it is fairly condensed, so no one could think of squeezing it any further). I even used the font, stretched by the very 120 per cent, for 10 point text and the result was surprisingly legible (given some peculiar details prominent at display size).’

Nata is a sans serif family with fourteen weights plus matching italics. It was designed by Candi Erwanto in 2019. This sans serif family is based and influenced by geometric styles that were popular during the 1920s and 30s and have been optically corrected for better readability. Nata has a functional look with a warm touch. While thin and black weights are great players in display size, lightweights, regular, and medium are suitable for longer texts. Small x-height and curbed shape provide a distinctive elegance. Nata is equipped for complex and professional typography. This OpenType font family has extended characters to support Central and Eastern European and Western European languages.

Binner was designed by John F. Cumming in 1898 and is an alphabet with a strongly historic character. It takes the reader back to the early part of the 20th century, when typefaces of this kind could be found in advertisements on houses and posters. The robust figures display a marked stroke contrast. Particularly striking are the high middle strokes of the E and F as well as the wavy connecting stroke of the H. The curves of the R and P extend well into the lower third of the characters. With its robust figures, Binner is best used for headlines in middle and larger point sizes.

Delecta is a sans serif family of seven weights + matching italics. Influenced by the geometric-style sans serif faces. The font has a slightly geometric touch with a simple and clean personality which makes it suitable for advertising and packaging, festive occasions, editorial and publishing, logo, branding and creative industries, poster and billboards as well as web and screen design.
