A shape-shaky script font that reacts to audio! Thanks to the variable font technology, fonts today can be variable be it weight, width or any other parameters that are defined by values such as shape! Even better: in html, with a bit of css (and in this case, javascript as well) it is possible to animate them between these values. This gave me the idea to create something really fun which is a quirky, informal handwritten font that can react to sound. The html file along with css and javascript is taken from codepen.io and I was using and tweaking it to this specific project. Italian type design master Aldo Novarese was not famous for making calligraphic designs, nor had he any interest in them. He is much better known for his text faces, and quite innovative sans serif and decorative designs which became the definition of what we now know as techno and modern. But in 1968, Novarese surprised everyone with a fantastic flowing deco script entitled Elite. Novarese's formula of simple soft curves and toned-down swashes makes for one of the most unique alphabets ever seen, not to mention one of the best flowing and most legible scripts. This is now its digital incarnation, named Fontella. Fontella's applications are virtually limitless. This is the sort of script that can feel at home pretty much anywhere; a sign, a fridge magnet, a bumper sticker, a greeting card, a movie poster, a book cover, music artwork, magazine ads, newsletter headlines, etc. Digitized from original specimen and expanded with a few built-in alternates and ligatures by Rebecca Alaccari, the font was named after the famed jazz singer Fontella Bass. These letters are just so sweet they had to be called Fontella.

In August of 2009, I was commissioned by Zoo York, a New York City based skateboard company, to visit Buenos Aires to study and document street typography. As soon as my taxi driver took the bustling street Entre Ríos, it was clear that the city and I were going to be good friends. Many of the independently owned businesses on Entre Ríos are adorned with handmade signage. These signs are painted in a style called Fileteado which is a century-old Argentinian type of lettering and floral ornamentation. Nowadays, Fileteado is still a prominent part of the city’s landscape, coloring the façades of restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Calaveras and Diablitos are two new typefaces that were inspired by Fileteado. Stylistically, the fonts are a return to a rhythmic and playful sensibility reminiscent of Vitrina and Cuba, two fonts that I designed in 1996. Along with dynamism and dance, these new fonts incorporate a rigor and functionality essential to labelling any font a ‘workhorse.’ The names Calaveras and Diablitos, came from the name of a song by the infamous Buenos Aires rock band, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. —Pablo A. The Colville fonts began their existence in 2015 as a project-specific typeface, made to be used on a custom-made headstone commemorating Canadian artist Alex Colville (1920-2013) and his wife Rhoda Wright. For that purpose, some initial shapes were modelled after letters Colville himself had used on a Governor General gold medal he designed in the mid-1970s. From there started a year-long project that culminated in a set of four comprehensive fonts ranging in weight from Light to Bold, each containing over 750 glyphs to cover Pan European language support, stylistic alternates, five sets of figures, automatic fractions, and some ornaments rooted in Alex Colville’s art. These fonts exhibit a strong art deco aesthetic that has always been a favourite of architects, metal casters, and sign makers. This is a very humanist geometry alternating from the precisely calculated to the curvy and lithe, subtle contrast, flat stroke stops, and airy proportions that make for a counterspace built for accommodation and comfort. The breadth and timeless humanism of the Colville set makes fit in a variety of applications, from straightforward headlines, titles, and emphasis captions, to branding and packaging.

In January of 2006, Jeff Levine fonts debuted with ten releases. Many of those first fonts were based on vintage lettering stencils, which were the "school years" catalyst for Jeff's interest in lettering and type design. Eight years later, his collection of fonts has become a giant catalog of display type ranging from Wood Type revivals to Art Nouveau, Art Deco to stencil, reinterpretations of old favorites, experimental fonts, dingbat fonts and typefaces reflecting a particular decade's styles of cultural popularity. Designs from old lettering books, type catalogs and advertising have also been fodder for many alphabets not previously available in a digital format. Along the way, many unusual lettering sources were also mined for type ideas. Vintage packaging, hand-lettered signage, sign making kits, rubber stamp type, water applied decals and at times just a singular letter example inspired many of the releases within this collection. It was a source of pride for Jeff Levine Fonts to reach 500 releases and a determined goal to grow the type library as far as possible. With this in mind, February 2014 brings forth many new releases. This one in particular, Ornery Polecat JNL, is the 800th typeface release from Jeff.

Mundane information—the sort you might ignore—often appears in the form of very simple, utilitarian lettering, devoid of personality, the sort of industrial lettering you find on old blueprints, park restrooms, and electrical boxes. MVB Diazo is such a thing. It looks like lettering done earnestly with a plastic template. The monoline caps—constructed from straight lines and simple curves—have rounded details as if rendered by a blunt pen on a topographical survey or by a router on a rustic campground sign. The MVB Diazo fonts are compact, available in two widths: Condensed and Extra Condensed. Each width offers four weights from Light to Black. The fonts are perfect for wherever plain and boring letterforms are required. All widths and weights are also available in two distressed textures (#1 and #2) that accentuate the industrial character of the design. Rough #1 is gritty, with finer texture for use at larger sizes. Rough #2 exhibits more damage, the roughness apparent when used at smaller sizes. The Rough fonts include alternates of a number of glyphs so that variation of texture is possible when letters repeat in a word.

Mullen Hand is the fresh digitization and expansion of a Jerry Mullen metal typeface called Repro, originally published by ATF in 1953. The connectivity of certain letters in the original type was limited by metal technology, but this new digital version is updated to resolve those issues with. Two- and three-letter ligatures take care of the r, s, x and z connections. These ligatures are programmed in the 'liga' feature of the OpenType version, so they automatically activate in programs that support advanced typography. Casual, tall, and elegantly friendly, Mullen Hand's even strokes and confident connections embody the spirit of contentedness and reassurance sought by today's appeal designer. It accommodates a variety of applications, from posters and signs, to book and music covers and product packaging. Mullen Hand comes in all popular formats. The TrueType and PostScript versions come with 2 fonts, one of them containing the ligatures and some alternates. In 2019, P22 Type Foundry met with Milton Glaser (1929–2020) to initiate the official digital series of typefaces designed by Glaser in the 1960s and 70s. P22 Glaser Babyteeth is the first family released in the series. According to Glaser: “The inspiration for my Babyteeth type face came from this sign I photographed in Mexico City. It’s an advertisement for a tailor. The E was drawn as only someone unfamiliar with the alphabet could have conceived. Yet it is completely legible. I tried to invent the rest of the alphabet consistent with this model.” P22 Glaser Babyteeth was based on original drawings and phototype proofs from the Milton Glaser Studios archives. Over the years there have been many typefaces that borrowed heavily from the Glaser designs, but these are the only official Babyteeth fonts approved by Milton Glaser Studio and the Estate of Milton Glaser. The solid and open versions are designed to overlap for two-color font effects and can even be mixed and matched for multi layer chromatic treatments. Babyteeth includes an expanded character set to support the majority of Latin languages.

Crafted in the best tradition of the geometric sans-serif, Rondana is a typographic tribute to the the retro-futuristic aesthetics of the 1960s and 70s, as well as an exercise in purity of line. However, its spirit is decidedly non-bauhausian, since its strokes intentionally deviate from the dull, obvious, ruler-and-compass construction; its arcs and curves being much more complex, tending towards a slightly square shape, imbued with subtle modulations. This sums up to a more organic, flowing, extroverted personality than the one just expected from the use of plain, simple geometry. Another feature is the conscious use of non-standard shapes for many signs, that are quite legible but somewhat unexpected, such as the E, the g and the ampersand; making Rondana an excellent display face and also giving a particular flavor to the text composed in it, especially in its italic variants —which are, by the way, designer italics in their own right and not just an oblique version of the roman. Rondana comes in twelve variants comprising a wide spectrum of weights, allowing for an extremely diverse range of expression.

“Chalkís” or “Chalkida” was the capital of the Euboea island in old Greece. The name derived from the Greek and it means copper - bronze. Colonist from this area founded several important cities in the Magna Graecia, such as Cumae (coastal area of Southern Italy), where our alphabet come from. At the beginning, first scribes draw the signs in mono-line, but later on, the influence of materials, tools and the skill of calligraphers, developed the refinement of the lettering. “Calcis” is a family of sans serif fonts, characterized by its austere, functional and clear style, emerged from straight lines and primary shapes; but enriched by the contribution of countless anonymous calligraphers who have polished and embellished their forms over the years. “Calcis” is presented in five weights and italic style. It has good legibility in small sizes, elegance and strong visual impact in headlines as well. Each font of the family contain 377 glyphs with accurate kerning pairs careful controlled, and advanced typographical support with OpenType features such as: old style numerals, ligatures, discretional ligatures and case-sensitive forms. It also contain diacritics for Central European languages.

This font is inspired by Johannes Janssonius, well know as Jan Janszoon o Jan Janssonius (Arnhem, 1588 – Amsterdam, 1664), was a Dutch cartographer, publisher and engraver. Married to Hondius's daughter. He was the author of many masterpieces of cartography of the 1700s like Willem Blaeu and Hondius, famous maps with heavy use of decorations in the letterig to fill the spaces of oceans, seas, lakes and scrolls. Rahere Esoteric is a gothic-flavoured, quasi-Roman display font with an eccentric persona and more quirks than a Tim Burton film. A member of the extended Rahere typeface family, it’s the enigmatic cousin of Rahere Roman Display & Rahere Sans. This is a niche display font that doesn’t try to please everyone. Rahere Esoteric revels in its mystical aura, using a bewildering array of ligatures to magically transmute itself as characters loop, curl, jerk and strut, randomly connecting and disconnecting into words like a retro-futuristic steam train clattering along a disused railway track, challenging and delighting the reader at the same time. The initial idea for Rahere Esoteric came about during a visit to Whitby, a small coastal town in Yorkshire, UK and famous for its inclusion in Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula. A Steampunk festival was in full swing and the narrow streets of the town centre were teeming with people adorned in a glorious fusion of clothing and accessories influenced by a love of 19th-century life, science fiction, horror, fashion and art. I was fascinated by the juxtapositions of colour, patterns, material and style – archaic mechanical Sci-fi, gothic, the American Wild West and romantic Victorian. But what intrigued me the most, somehow, all the disparate elements worked as a whole. Thus, like Frankenstein, this font jolted into existence. BoiTu is a typeface in the BoiTu project designed by Vei Vei. BoiTu has a strong contrast between bold bars and long sharp hook strokes inspired by pheasant feathers on the hat in Hat Boi costume. "Tuong or Hat Boi is a form of Vietnamese classic opera, combining various elements of arts such as stage, music, fine art, literature, dancing, and martial arts. Older Tuong plays are usually about historical events or tales. Allegories, melodramas, soliloquies, modes of expression, forms of performance, repartee singing and recitative conventions, etc., are constantly updated and elevated, and are quintessential elements in the art of Tuong." When I started working on this font, I had the radio on. Ed Sheeran was singing his song ‘Castle On The Hill’ and when I looked at this new font of mine, I couldn’t help but notice it had a bit of a medieval look. So I named it Castle On The Hill. COTH is a very lively, messy handpainted serif. It was made with a Japanese brush pen. I actually had a different look in mind, but this is what came out of the pen and I quite liked its looks. It is especially useful for children’s book covers, apps and posters, but be my guest and use it as you like. All it needs is a designers’ touch, a nice tune and a sunset.

It’s a brand new year, but I have been going back in time. To the seventies to be precise. A ‘bubblegum’ font was on the top of my to-do list, so when it was finally finished, it reminded me of seventies posters. As if by magic, a catchy bassline started playing in my head and before I knew it, Boney M appeared - all dressed up in Purple and singing Daddy Cool. Cool Daddy is a fat, rounded bubblegum font, which will take you back to the decade of moustaches, afros and glitter. This ultra groovy font will funk up your designs 4-sho. The powerful Eknaton comes with slanted slabserifs, a new way to add some spring to the old Egyptian slabs. Eknaton echoes the tradition that started with Napoleon's Egyptian campaign 1798, and the simultaneous looting of Egyptian art. The imports led to new ladies fashion in Europe, new architecture and new typefaces like Antique (Figgins, 1815) and Egyptian (Caslon, 1816). The Egyptian faces were also the origin of the famous Clarendon (1845) and Ionic No.5 (1925) as well as the rest of "the legibility types". In the 20th century the slabserifs became popular again with Bauhaus incarnations like Memphis (Wolf, 1929) and Beton (Jost, 1931). The Bauhaus movement, otherwise anti-serif, liked the architectural influence in Egyptian slabserifs. The Bo Berndal design of Eknaton puts some speed into the old Sphinx - the cat is back, in better form than ever! Bo Berndal, born 1924, has been designing typefaces for 56 years, for Monotype, Linotype and other foundries. First presented by the Bauer Type Foundry in 1928, Futura is commonly considered the major typeface development to come out of the Constructivist orientation of the Bauhaus movement in Germany. Paul Renner (type designer, painter, author and teacher) sketched the original drawings and based them loosely on the simple forms of circle, triangle and square. The design office at Bauer assisted him in turning these geometric forms into a sturdy, functioning type family, and over time, Renner made changes to make the Futura fonts even more legible. Futura’s long ascenders and descenders benefit from generous line spacing. The range of weights and styles make it a versatile family. Created by Swedish designer Bo Berndal in 1999, Linotype Dala Text can best be described as a softer, friendlier blackletter. Blackletter refers to typefaces that evolve out of Northern Europe's medieval manuscript tradition. Lionheart is the digitization and expansion of Saladin, a neo-gothic typeface designed by Friedrich Poppl, long after he established himself as one of the greatest German designers of all time with some of the most “ausgezeichnet” scripts and text faces to ever come out of Europe. EXPRESO was inspired by the extinct art and craft of urban Lettering applied to buses and other kind of cars for public service of transportation. Since the mid of last century, main cities of Colombia - as Bogotá, Medellín and others - were growing in population and brought urban area expansion with it and serious traffic problems due to the lack of political will and urban planning. The problem of urban transport in Colombia's largest cities has not yet been resolved, despite adopting some examples of mass transit system in other cities in the region. Before these actions, public transport in cities such as Bogotá was quite varied, leaving space for popular culture that survived for a couple of decades, until the massive dieback of these old buses early this decade, either by practices associated with Lettering it was displaced by some technological, some expressions of art street and city that evolved or disappeared. Quartal is a family of stylish sans serif typefaces of condensed proportions. The family consists of 5 regular weights, 4 condensed ones and 13 extended styles (7 upright and 6 italic).
