A ‘Brochette’ in French is a skewer. I used to be a tour guide and some years ago, I guided a couple of tours in Mali. Every night at dinner we had the choice of a ‘Brochette de Capitaine’ (grilled Nile perch on a skewer) or a ‘Brochette de Bœuf’ (grilled beef on a skewer). Of course, every night the Brochette came with French fries and ‘petits pois’ (peas). It was really nice, but after 4 months of eating Brochettes, I longed for something different! Brochette is a very nice rounded font. It comes with curls, swirls and swashes.

The family of Tipografia Maracatu was born in 2020 when we could not leave the house because of the coronavirus epidemic. I had no idea how it would turn out. I just wanted to draw letters. When I finished the regular version, I thought it looked a lot like the art and music from the Northeast of Brazil, and that is why I came up with the name Maracatu. Maracatu is a musical-style original from the Northeast of Brazil. After I had the font style and the Regular version, I thought it would be nice to have Bold and Light.

Latin music was all the rage in the United States from the 1930s through the 1950s and songs with a “South of the Border” or “Old Mexico” theme were plentiful. The 1940 sheet music for “Make Love with a Guitar” evoked the idea of serenading one’s lovely lady on horseback while strumming the guitar. ..at least if you went by the by the illustration under the song’s name. As the hand lettered title was rendered in an Art Deco design, it became the basis for Jazz Guitar JNL [which seemed a more befitting name], and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

»Supra Mezzo« – designed by Gert Wiescher in 2012/13 – is an unusual addition to the Supra family, a weight in between the normal and the condensed width. Pseudo-Hellenic is a font based the Greek typeface of Firmin Didot. The original Greek typeface became standard during the Victorian era and remained popular until the last part of the twentieth century. Pseudo-Hellenic seeks to create an environment reminicent of the many Greek texts and is meant to re-create their ethos while communicating with a non-Greek speaking audience. Pseudo-Hellenic with full punctuation, a character 221 glyph character set that allows the user to type in most Western European Latin alphabet languages. Being a decorative font, it works best at larger point sizes.

Eckhardt Informal JNL was found in a Dan Solo alphabets book under the name "Circus Wagon". This hand-lettered design with a playful inline is reminiscent of the show cards of the 1940s and 1950s. The Eckhardt series of typefaces is named in honor of the late Al Eckhardt, Jr. - a good friend of type designer Jeff Levine whose talents in hand-crafting attractive lettering was appreciated by many. His work, like the others before him is fast become a lost art in today's technology-driven world. Eckhardt Informal JNL is available in it's regular (inline) version and also as a solid version.

The original design came from Berthold Herold typeface, designed by Hermann Hoffmann during 1913 (Art Nouveau style) in Germany. This project started from flyer printed during 1947 with movable type, the specimen was scanned as a source to development some of the uppercase letterforms. However the most unusual and tricky element from this sample is the leg from the uppercase (R) which is different from the original Herold design, until now I didn’t found where this version originally came from. This expanded version only contain the bold weight, however there are also stencil (Nouveau LX Stencil) and condensed version (Nouveau LX) available.

MVB Gryphius is a digitization of uncommon type from an era normally associated with the work of Nicolas Jenson. Produced by Otto Trace, the fonts come from types used by Sebastian Gryphius in Lyon in the early 16th century. The italic appears in a book from 1524 and the roman and small caps appear with the same italic in another book printed by Gryphius in 1541. Retaining the rough contours and uneven texture of its source, MVB Gryphius is best used at text sizes from 12- to 15-point, but its old world character can work in display settings too.

Whenever I see clippings on TV of demonstrations, protesting against this or that, with people holding up signs, I am surprised about the signs being professionally printed or plotted in Helvetica or Futura condensed. I've even seen signs in Zapfino! That doesn't really cut it, it doesn't look much like a real protest. So I decided to give the protesting world a real good font for the occasion. While helping produce a trade magazine years ago, I admired the hand-lettering of the art director -- a woman named Marydale -- and suggested she let me model a font after her penmanship. She agreed and drew out the alphabet, and I launched an old copy of Fontographer and (to shorten a long story) ended up developing my very first digital typeface. Which has since, astonishingly, become famous worldwide. So now the real Marydale gets the mixed blessing of seeing her handwriting (and name) plastered all over the planet. Full release has regular, bold, and black weights.
