An old Art Nouveau typeface named "Daphne" provided the inspiration for this decidely different font. This version is upright, but the linocut treatment employed visually suggests the slight rightward slant of the original typeface. Bold, unusual and distinctive. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

The inspiration for this versatile typeface came from both Art Deco and Military sources. On a huge garbage bin in Lisbon I saw the sentence, “Perdidos no kaos”, which means lost in chaos and I really liked the rough stenciled lettering. The type design which inspired Stencil Maker JNL comes from a 1920s-era machine used in movie theaters of the day. It rendered tiny punched out letters (some characters solid and some in stencil form), enabling the user to make projection slides of important messages or general notices for the theater audience to read.

A 1930s travel poster from American Airlines had the airline’s name in a classic thick-and-thin Art Deco design of hand lettering. With the addition of angular spurs, some of the characters become semi-serif in nature. This type style is now available as Travel Plans JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

The highest and windiest mountain of Provençe is the Mont Ventoux. That is where I saw a pretty windy signpost in a very windy typeface that inspired me to design Ventoux. LTC Spire with alternate caps was designed by Lanston’s type director Sol Hess in 1937. Spire Roman was designed without lowercase. But it includes alternate rounded caps which transform this extra condensed “fat face” into more of an art deco titling face.
