Martin, a condensed semi-serif with rounded edges and friendly serifs, shows its charme best in short, pointed sentences, in headlines set in about 20 to 36 p. The playing with serifs in a condensed, very characteristic type design is attractive and the technical skill is convincing. More styles are planned. The idea was to try to apply a given design criteria (also see Volker Schnebel's Marita and Manuel fonts) to every single character. In other words, start with a character and develop all of the others from it. This is quite easy for some characters but extremely difficult for others. This process generates creativity and the characters move away from the initial constructed sketch. Together in a typeface, the individual characters are now all of a piece and character.

This is a monospace font for the Braille alphabet. The idea came while exploring new ways to display the regular braille glyph ( 3 rows of 2 dots ). The glyph design is inspired by "stackable multiple board" games like the famous Vulcan chess (from Star Trek series) and the Qubic (3D tic-tac-toe). The stack is made from 3 levels, each level is a 3x3 grid with 2 "playable" cells (South-West and North-East). Each cell can be either empty, filled by a white square token or a black square token. The 3D effect is obtained by means of the classic isometric perspective. Lowercase letters use black tokens, while uppercase letters use white tokens. Most special characters (e.g. digits, *$#@, []{}() etc.. ) are also provided for special usages like program source code (see poster 5).

Capsule is a reverse-stress, high-contrast, rounded sans-serif font with two distinct personalities. An all-caps face, there are however variations of some letters in the lowercase slots. Designed for Linotype Library GMBH and the International Typeface Corporation in 1997 by Phil Grimshaw. Based on bold script Banco designed by French graphic and poster designer Roger Excoffon and released in 1952 by the Fonderie Olive. Originally Banco was an all-caps bold typeface, and the lower case and the corresponding light weight were created for ITC. Acherus Feral is sharpened version of Acherus Grotesque. In this new version all sharp edges are flattened and rounded corners are sharpened. Alternative character "G" and optional "t" character have been added. Some of the characters like "A,K,M,N,Q,R,V,W,Z,v,w,z" have been changed completely for the stability of the typeface, in this way it looks more confident and serious. The Cardea family of typefaces is the outcome of David Cabianca’s 2003–04 MA Typeface Design experience at the University of Reading. With Cardea, Cabianca intended to mix classical and modern characteristics, and in the process he created a typeface that “sparkles” on the page, with high contrast, luster and crisp edges. The result is a type with a muscular or sculptural feel much like the work of artists like Arne Quinze or Mark di Suvero. Cardea was designed to function as a text face. It features three weights each with accompanying italics, small caps and a variety of ligatures.

Boutique is a reinterpretation of Modern typefaces that posits an alternative present for the genre. Our initial version of Boutique explored the relationship between Modern typefaces and Modernism. Built upon a Didone Skeleton, we amplified its geometric character and stripped away ornament to create an elegant sans-serif with an idiosyncratic edge. We have since overhauled Boutique to create a comprehensive family. Adding a serif and italic in three optical variations for small (S), medium (M), and large (L) applications. The updated Boutique features additional and refined glyphs, styles, and weights to create a freely interchangeable typographic system.

Drawn by master German calligrapher Hermann Zapf in the 1970s, Noris Script captures the magic of the irregularities of pen strokes. The idea behind Noris Script was to bring the spontaneity of a quick handwritten script using a broad-edged pen into the modern typesetting environment. Noris is the Latin name for the German city of Nuremberg, where Hermann Zapf was born and raised. Nuremberg has something special about it, aside from Hermann Zapf, it has a great tradition of writing masters, such as Johann Neudörffer (1497-1563), Wolfgang Fugger (1515-1568), and Rudolf Koch (1876-1934).

Here’s an edge-tattered, slightly distorted typeface that was developed from hand stamping using ink. You’ll find it ideal for both display and text situations where legibility is a big concern. Eric Stevens's latest typeface, ITC Lintball, combines two unusual features: its letterforms are based on the serifless lettering inscribed in stone by the ancient Greeks, yet the wobbly edges of the strokes, and especially the slightly wider “lintballs” on the ends, suggest lettering done on paper with a modern felt-tip pen. The ball motif is carried through in the fat dot under the raised capital O, and in the similar dot used in place of a crossbar in the capital A. There's an angularity to many of the strokes, especially in the lowercase, that gives Lintball its distinctive character.

Grimmig draws inspiration from solid and angular blackletter shapes and the idea of cutting letters out of paper. The interaction between curves, sharp edges, and partially unconventional serif placement makes it an excellent typeface for impactful headlines. The vivid details fade into the background in smaller sizes and provide an enjoyable reading experience for continuous text. Open counters and a large x-height contribute to Grimmig’s legibility in text sizes. It was developed as part of the MA Typeface Design in the University of Reading but had started before as a graduation project for Tamara Pilz.
