Bodoni Classic Swing is another of my decorative additions to Bodoni’s family of typefaces. Bodoni did not design decorative versions. His quest was for purity in book design. He was purely as a printer who had to cut his own fonts because there simply weren't any foundries in those days. I think if Giambattista were alive today he would design many decorative typefaces. This rough-and-ready display face is based on El Greco Antique, released by the Fundición Richard Gans of Madrid in the 1930s. Distressed but not distressing, rough yet charming, ragged around the edges but curiously refined. Named after a village in Greece which is the ancestral home of the forebears of the Curtii. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

Freeland is a casual brush typeface, with a rich, inky texture, and just a bit of a masculine, edgy vibe. It’s modern, bold, and lively, but not too whimsical. Suchow was developed from a hand lettered storybook title by Willy Pogany. It's designed to give the feel of the Far East, with character shapes reminiscent of oriental brush lettering. Mysterious is a bit of an unusual font. It looks old fashioned, but it comes with cool stylistic alternates, it could be a didone, but it is not (really), it looks formal, but it is rather scary. Mysterious was more or less based on the titling pages of 17th century atlases and my own twisted imagination. Willy small but fine is a typeface with a wink. This display font is based on existing piquant form from the immediate vicinity. It is sexy, if you have an eye for. But it also should not be taken too seriously, especially because it has a humorous slant. The font has its origins in an art project. A blackletter font I could not resist to revive: Ernst Schneidler’s Buchdeutsch, released by Schelter & Giesecke in 1926 which I renamed as Werbedeutsch. This font contains the letter ‚long s‘ which can be reached in two ways. Either you use the OpenType feature ‚historical forms‘, or you type the integral sign on your keyboard. To achieve all ligatures, it is recommended to activate both standard and discretionary ligatures.

Organic Respect is my monospaced and organic slab serif font. Faber Serif is the Roman typeface which was born out of the sans serif design Faber Sans. The pro­portions are nearly identical to those of Faber Sans. In comparison, Faber Serif has heavy — although very short — serifs. The character of contrasting strokes is not very pronounced; therefore, this font is closely related to the first Roman typefaces from the 15th century. Faber Serif perfectly matches with Faber Sans!

Blippo Black with its constructed style is a typical headline typeface. Its robust figures with their even strokes were composed using the basic forms of the circle and rectangle. Its curves are often not completely closed. The figures of Blippo Black form dark, heavy lines, making the typeface suitable only in middle and larger point sizes. Blippo Black will make an impression when used for flyers and correspondence.

I am not a very romantic type (pun intended…), but a slightly slanted connected script always looks as if it was made for romance! Here’s a not-often-seen variation of Milton Glaser’s 1968 creation Baby Teeth, distributed by Photo-Lettering Inc. as Baby Teeth Baroque. Actually, the sinuous swirls suggest, rather, an Art Nouveau influence, which is why this version has its name. Well, that, and the original design didn’t need any fixing. It's cool to be square. Among the many strange attempts to conceal writing, these two systems allegedly used by the Masons have a wonderful simplicity and relative ease of use. Both systems, the Rosicrucian and Free Mason, (also called the Pigpen cypher) as simple replacement ciphers never offered very great cryptographic security, but certainly would ensure that the casual observer would not be able to read documents written in such scripts.

There were several motivations for this font. It was a font in my style, a left-handed designer. But also, I wanted a script designed to work with ePUBs. This means fancy bullets in place of some of the ASCII characters—since ePUB readers do not support OpenType at all. Basically, I just had fun with it. The heifer for the mu figure cracks me up. What can I say?

I have no particular love for pigeons, but I read an interesting article about war pigeons being used to send messages to an fro. One pigeon (called William of Orange) even saved more than 2000 soldiers during the Battle of Arnhem. Pigeon Post is a lovely cartoon and kids font. It comes in a sans and a serif style, so there’s really no excuse for not using it!

Shiver me Timbers and Splice me Mainbrace! There's strange goings on in Smugglers' Cove... A gathering of thieves, brigands, piratefolk and back-stabbing blackguards the likes of which have not been seen since the days of Redbeard! Someone'll be swinging from the yardarm or walking the plank if the map identifying the location of the fonts created for Grim Todd McFarlane's SPAWN: THE DARK AGES doesn't turn up soon!

Nick Belshaw designed Belshaw in 1980 as a nostalgic tribute to Jugendstil mixed with a 1980s feel. Belshaw is a headline font and should not be used with a smaller point size than 12. It is a good font for initials in magazines or on posters as well as for very short texts. It combines well with sans serif fonts. Belshaw gives a strong and lively feel to any text.

The Tough Dude font is a confident, devil-may-care, tough-guy font with attitude that screams "I don't need no stinkin' penmanship." It conveys a self-assuredness that does not preoccupy itself with trying to be necessarily legible or easy on the eyes but rather pragmatic, fast-flowing, and interested in scribbling the message out fast and moving on to the next task.
