Gridiot is a constructed, semi-serif, two-weight stencil family that expands an approach taken by Josef Albers. Intended for display or headline setting, it features chamfered or bevel-cut corners, used instead of curves. The individual letter components sometimes vary in depth, avoiding a strictly modular approach, while the widths are kept consistent. The lining figures provide a standard set of numbers, and the oldstyle figures align with the lowercase, encouraging lowercase-only setting. Currency and other useful numerical symbols are provided in both versions. The zero is intentionally lighter, following early Renaissance types; there are filled versions as stylistic alternates. While horizontal scaling distorts the relationship between verticals and horizontals in a typeface, since every chamfer in Gridiot is at 45°, changing the horizontal scaling of the type will affect all diagonals equally. When used at a large size, or for a just few words, Gridiot can be very tightly spaced. Remember, any idiot can design a typeface on a grid: Gridiot.

Serat is a medium contrast flared serif with mixed up styles of classic typefaces which is highly influenced by early stages of Latin based hand writing. The lowercase are modernized versions of Carolingian minuscules, vertical stems which touch the baseline have been modified to have horizontal cut for simpler look and keep the calligraphic style for terminals & stroke ends. Then the uppercase are flared serif which were influenced by Roman inscriptional capitals. The font name was taken from the Javanese word "serat" which means writing (noun). It comes with some unique features, such as: - Carolingian style alternate for some letters (a,e,f,g,t), also comes with separated stylistic set for long 's', and long left leg 'x' and alternative ampersand. - Discretionary ligatures for all caps titling. - Standard Ligatures. - Tabular and Proportional for both Lining and Old-style figure. - Fraction with Nominator and Denominator. - Superscript and Subscript for numbers, etc. Serat would be suitable for "classic" themed work; poster, book cover, branding, videography, etc.

The Kaffeesatz EF typeface was designed in 1993 by Ralf Borowiak in three weights: “Schwarz”, “Weiß” and „Süß“ (“Black“, “White” and “Sweet”). Once upon a time, in the days BC (that's Before Computers) there lived a very talented group of men and women whose job it was to render ads by hand. So skillful were these people that some say it was possible to actually identify the typefaces that the layout artists were emulating. Their renderings were swift and slick, no time for detail as it was necessary to do a whole bunch of variations, usually within ridiculous deadlines. Their only tools: bullet-tip markers and bond paper - often mistakes resulted but no time to re-do and white paint was totally unacceptable - just let the slipups be. Here's a simulation of their craft, we don't really know what typeface this was supposed to represent… any ideas?

Pocketknife is a simple grid-based titling font on it’s surface, but it has a surprisingly prolific set of features under the surface. The most notable of these features is an abundant set of ligatures that give Pocketknife it’s unique look. There are very few kerning pairs contained within Pocketwatch, and these ligatures fill in most gaps that could be created by letters with more empty space, such as L and T, and also give a more playful look to an otherwise sharp-edged typeface. Pocketknife also contains with 2 full sets of alternate characters, one pairing with the uppercase set and one pairing with the lowercase—available as OpenType stylistic alternates or individually in the Glyphs panel. Pocketknife Regular is designed to be used on it’s own, while the Inline and Base fonts are designed to be used as a simple layered combination. Sans-serif typefaces compensate for their basic handicap – an absence of serifs – with a softening modulation typical of roman typefaces. Grotesques often inherit a hypertrophy of the x-height, which is very efficient, but not very beautiful. They are like dogs with fat bodies and short legs. Why do we love old Garamonds? Beside beautifully modeled details, they possess aspect-ratios of parts within characters that timelessly and beauteously parallel the anatomy of the human body. Proportions of thighs, arms or legs have their universal rules, but cannot be measured by pixels and millimeters. These sometimes produce almost unnoticeable inner tensions, perceptible only very slowly, after a period of living with the type. Serifed typefaces are open to many possibilities in this regard; when a character is mounted on its edges with serifs, what is happening in between is more freely up to the designer. In the case of grotesques, everything is visible; the shape of the letter must exist in absolute nakedness and total simplicity, and must somehow also be spirited and original.

Roughwork was developed in response to repeated requests for a set of initials which looked like sketches of a font in development. So we took our True Golden font and reverse-engineered the lines and arcs needed to define the character shapes and the result has the look of original typeface drawings.

Julia Child once said: the secret to great french cooking is butter, butter, butter. Thus, we present to you Manteiga - butter in Portuguese! - a typeface for heart-melting, word-spreading goodness. The idea we had was to play with brush lettering - a style we love - and go as far as we can with the shapes of the letters while finding balance between positive and negative space. We wanted biiiig personality. And small inconsistencies - the ones that add texture and life to lettering. We left extensive OpenType features and technical stuff aside for a moment, adding later only what we thought was necessary, like different shapes for the Q, a and g - for example. All caps setting was something we wanted from the beginning. In text case, the x-height is rather short for a brush script, and this lends a quirky voice. Spacing is ultra tiiiiight so don’t go too small, but make it as big as you want! Ah! And there are some fun dingbats thrown in for good measure.

Normal and upright italic script fonts line a well-trodden path; left-leaning fonts (or "rightalics" as they're confusingly called), on the other hand, are a rarity. Here at Eclectotype Fonts we don't like to do things too conventionally, so here's Backstroke, a laid back script with a unique voice. With contextual alternates for start and end forms of certain characters, swash versions of L, Q and Z (surely the most used initial caps!), and a handful of stylistic sets, Backstroke is a restrained script. Stylistic sets are: 1. the start forms of i, j, m, n, and p are used always instead of only at word starts. 2. lower case ascenders get a whole lot loopier. 3. alternate versions of G, N and Y. 4. swash L, Q and Z. 5. swaps the default Polish script lslash for a more familiar version While fonts that lean the wrong way may be a bit more difficult to fit into your layouts than boring old regular italics, they will reward you with their individuality. The Scriptuale family, which contains eight styles, is a contemporary upright calligraphic face. Designed by German designer Renate Weise in 2003, this family of typefaces speaks to the present, while at the same time reflecting on a lyrical past. The letterforms of the Scriptuale family are romanticized, they reference German calligraphic styles from the 19th and early 20th Centuries. For instance the design of Scriptuale's uppercase strays from the canon of classical proportion into romantic idealism. While the C and O are drawn according to the ancient quadratic proportions - almost twice as wide, optically, as the E or the L - the letter A is wider than would be expected, and the D narrower. These subtle differences introduce a different rhythm into text set in Scriptuale than Italic styles of calligraphy may offer. Scriptuale's Gs merit special notice: both the upper and lower case G lunge slightly forward, further enhancing the dynamic quality of the text. Also unique in Scriptuale's design is the lowercase width: the letterforms appear slightly condensed; they have large x-heights to compensate for this. In a delightful twist, the number 2's beak has been closed by drawing it full-circle, back into the stem: this references a style of letter design that was practiced, among other places, by artists from the old Klingspor foundry in Offenbach Germany. Typefaces constructed there easily captured the zeitgeist of the romantic period, but are less calligraphic than Scriptuale (e.g., Rudolf Koch's Koch Antiqua). A semi-serif face (like Prof. Hermann Zapf's Optima or Otl Aicher's Rotis Semi), some of Scriptuale's letters have serifs (D), and some do not (A). And although both the B and the E normally have the same "structure" on their left side, Weise has drawn them differently in Scriptuale. These strengthen the calligraphic-like quality of the family.
