Finally the time has come to publish our new ‘BlackHand’ font. It is a bold and upright handwritten font featuring 150 ligatures, which make for a credible handwritten look and feel. The ligatures will appear quasi random without the user having to search for the right alternate character in a list of glyphs. As you will notice, the font does well in both headers (it even has an ‘instant logo’ quality) and in plain text. The font finds it’s origin in handwritten notes which were done without paying attention to aesthetics. The regular characters and the ligatures were handpicked to form an organic and natural, very readable result. The original writing was done with an Edding 1340 brushpen, giving the font frivolous thick/ thin strokes. We hope you enjoy using the font as much as we did creating it. This font was created with math teachers in mind. It is hard to represent fractions in a way that can print easily in black and white on worksheets or tests. I wanted to do somewhat like Blackletter, but Blackletter is hard to read sometimes, so I tried to solve this problem and to do something unique. This font is able to be used with all European languages including ancient and reconstructed languages like Old Church Slavonic (it can be written by Cyrillic or Glagolitic script), Proto Slavic, Ancient Greek etc. It also includes IPA, so it can be used in education.

Designer RD was created in 1999, at the same time as Just Square and Why Square typefaces, and envisioned to be their rounded alternative. Donnager is a rough, hard and futuristic typeface. It is inspired by square shapes, dystopia and futurism. The name is inspired, like the font itself, by the Dead Space universe. Texicali is a multiple weight type design based on our FontMesa logo. The idea was simple: create a sans serif with a few slab serifs added resulting in a style that could feel at home just about anywhere. The regular/standard set works well for general use while the Alt set is perfect for when you want to add a little country charm. ITC Freddo is the work of New York designer James Montalbano and was inspired by a sign lettering manual from the 1930s. Montalbano liked the character shapes illustrated in this manual but found many of the proportions odd. So he reinterpreted them to produce capitals and lower case letters which, according to today's standards, better complement one another.

Another example of 1930s French Art Deco lettering from the 1934 publication L'Art du Tracé Rationnel de la Lettre (which roughly translates to “The Rational Path Art of the Letter”) resulted in the digital typeface French Slab Serif JNL. This bold and slightly eccentric slab serif design is available in both regular and oblique versions.

ITC Berkeley Old Style is based on a typeface designed by Frederic W. Goudy in 1938 called University of California Old Style. It was a private press type for the publishing house of that school. In 1958, about ten years after Goudy's death, Monotype re-issued the type under the name Californian, and it became a very successful face for book typography. Goudy himself said he designed this face to have the greatest legibility possible, and it is indeed free from the exuberances in some of his other faces. Tony Stan redrew the family for ITC for 1983, and it was named ITC Berkeley Old Style, Berkeley being the city where the University of California Press is located. Stan did a careful drawing of eight styles including italics. I have just returned from a trip to Malaysia, Java and Bali with my family: my wife had some family business there, so we turned it into a holiday. The last time I visited these places was 26 years ago and I knew things would have changed, but I wasn’t prepared for the ugly truth. Malaysia’s interior has been converted into one big oil palm plantation, Java is choked in plastic and Bali is one endless string of concrete hotels, restaurants and cheap tattoo parlours.
