Galle is a very distinctive and specific typeface. It has 356 glyphs that are coherent in their own way. We have two versions to use: regular and italic. It is a display font with very characteristic letters, each of which has been developed separately, but in such a way as to match the rest of the typeface. The inspiration taken to design the cut is Sri Lankan typography - a lot of squiggles and sharp edges, hence the name of one of the prettiest and atmospheric cities in Sri Lanka - Galle.

By the 1990s, the availability of font creation software opened the door to an explosion of creativity, experimentation and exploration into the world of digital typography by amateur and professional alike. The undisputed king of the freeware fonts was Ray Larabie through his Larabie Fonts website. It seemed at the time that Ray’s output was endless, and he amassed dozens upon dozens of fonts that ranged from the ridiculous to the sublime. In fact, Ray was the driving force of encouragement and a behind-the-scenes “mentor” who helped Jeff Levine Fonts get underway in January of 2006. As Larabie’s focus changed to higher-quality commercial type design with the launch of Typodermic, Inc., many of his “less than perfect” font experiments were withdrawn and shelved. Ray eventually turned those lost (and sometimes questionable) typefaces into a bundled zip archive released into the public domain through Creative Commons. One particular design “Boron” (circa 1996) featured computer-oriented lettering as if etched onto a circuit board. Running with this idea, and with Ray's approval, the electronic elements were stripped away, the characters cleaned up and modified, and the font reworked in Retro Checkbook JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Zigfrida Typeface was born from a process of re-designing a logo where, through a grid created, I was developing all its main characters. As the project grew, it was noted that it was necessary not only to limit itself to the Latin alphabet, but also to develop Cyrillic characters. Its possibilities of use are endless, can be used in projects for your favorite sport, signs, posters, large formats, advertising projects, architectural, packaging, titles, among others. The result of all this was the development of a font that has up to 747 glyphs that can understand 100% of Latin languages and the vast majority of countries that use the Cyrillic alphabet. This family was inspired by the early Fraktur style font used circa 1530 by Jacob Otther, printer in Strasbourg (Alsace-France) for German language printed books. Although it is an early Fraktur pattern, it is easy to see the characteristic differences with the Schwabacher style (look at 1538 Schwabacher), like in the small d, o or y... and the capitals (look at the H, K, T...). Frequently, Schwabacher and Fraktur were used together in the same book : Fraktur style for the main and Schwabacher for marginalia and comments. This font contains standard ligatures and German historical ligatures (German double s, long s, ts...) and diacritics (special ummlaut "e superscript" and "∞" instead of dieresis with letters a, o and u,) naturally, we have added numerous letters lacking in the original to permit a contemporary use of the font.

This font family was inspired by a visit to the Duxford Air Museum just outside of Cambridge, UK, where the whole history of aviation is represented in a series of exhibits ranging from early prop planes to supersonic jetliners. A common feature is the clipped, blockletter painted on the wing or fuselage of each aircraft, my interpretation of which I present here. To add an original touch each letter incorporates its designation in the NATO phonetic alphabet. In response to popular demand this font is now available in 'Scotch' and 'Irish' versions. As with any attempt at a new typeface, you want to create something different. A difficult task as most legible fonts are based on something previous. Somatype isn't actually based on any particular font but it has unavoidable similarities to others. The important difference here being the distinctive quirk of the connection points going opposite to the norm; exemplified best by the lower case d & e. Once devised, the unique characteristic was applied wherever possible, keeping the rest of the characters in a sympathetic, rounded style. I first designed this in the light weight version, seeing it working best as a large open display font for magazines etc. but realized it would be too light for body copy at small scale, so, medium and bold weights were created to resolve that issue. Incidentally, the word ‘somatype’ literally means body-type.
