Each of the fonts was carefully digitized from the handwriting of different homeless people who agreed to participate in this initiative. Being in the street isn’t pleasant at all. Seeing people who’ve just showered go past makes you miss even more things that many take for granted. Breakfast, a clean smell, paying for a metro ticket. Being homeless is much more than having nowhere to sleep. Life in the street is hard, says Gemma, but she also sees the positive side. “It’s the best way to get to know human beings.” She likes to see the street as if it were a school. A school she has been in and out of for too long.

The letterforms are based on Inserat Cursive, a bold script popular in the late nineteenth century; the treatment was suggested by cover artwork for Graphic Styles from Victorian to Post-Modern, written by Stephen Heller and designed by Seymour Chwast. This font owes its inspiration to the Bauhaus, the celebrated 1920s design collective which more or less invented modernism as we know it in the applied arts: from architecture and industrial design to graphics and typography. With this new release I've tried to recapture the zeitgeist of those pioneering days.

Salacious is my soft/rough all-caps font, inspired by both comics and grafitti. The weight and width of the letters varies a bit. Not in a disturbing way, but more in a lively and organic way. I've added 5 (slightly) different versions of each letter (which automatically cycles as you type!) The letter shapes are a bit rough, due to the fact that they are handmade, and all corners are rounded, which gives a nice soft look!
