Samhain is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. There is no set date, but normally it is held around the end of October and beginning of November. Samhain font was made with a bamboo pen and Chinese ink on rough paper - hence the grungy look. It is quite a heavy font, so I wouldn't set a complete text in it, but it is ideal to create headlines, posters, postcards and invitations. Of course, Halloween comes to mind! Samhain comes with extensive language support.

Terrified AOE was inspired by vintage horror movie poster titling from the 1960's. It is a Capitals and smallcaps typeface, that really feels like a mix of three typefaces in one. While the Capitals and Smallcaps typesetting works to the effect of the original inspirations, each case also works well amongst itself independently, and having very different vibes. I've always been a huge fan of horror movies, and some of the lettering from vintage horror movie posters are so cool and alive, I only wish there were more of them recreated as display fonts.

Sinffonia is a beautiful ornamental font family. Its thin weight and roman style makes very elegant and ideal for any high quality project. Bronto is a typeface that mutated many times: it went from being morphologically conventional, to have soft features, to finally have some inverted contrasts that made it more dynamical; but all this without losing sight of the meaning of a typefamily, and the aim pursued by this work: Bronto doesn’t behave as a piece of art, but as a tool. In some weights, this typeface possesses fluffy characteristics and is boldly bighead, while in other versions is slightly contrasted and controlled; this in order to maintain the essential features of the typefamily along the versatility and usability of the 20 variations that composed it. Bronto it’s inspired in neo humanists typographies of the 20th century, and in Chilean lettering. This kind of work was made by the spontaneity of the paintbrush, which gave an inverted contrast to some characters. This typeface has plenty of OpenType features, specially an extensive set of ligatures in all weights. Bronto is well suited for motion graphics, letterings, web, advertisings, magazines and books.

One of my earliest memories of being able to write - an exciting skill - was of writing with my finger in the fine soft sea sand. I remember the freedom - I had no fear of making mistakes, of smudging ink or of doing anything wrong - and the ease with which I could write or wipe out any thing in the sand. Designing SandWriting was a tribute to those early memories. The font was an attempt to capture the simplicity and ease of a finger effortlessly making its mark in the sand. It can be used in many ways: in menus and invitations, in newsletters and advertisements, and in scrapbooks and brochures. It might be particularly useful for written material aimed at younger people. SandWriting contains all upper and lower case characters, all punctuation and special characters as well as all accented and standard European characters.

Originally a conceptual approach from the Chatype project of Jeremy Dooley and Robbie de Villiers, Quatie has been restructured to add a new industrial element to Insigne’s offerings. Like the Official Font of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Quatie definitely carries a contemporary, hipster feel. Quatie similarly draws much of its inspiration from the industrial brawn of the railroad and the unique characteristics of Cherokee letterforms, giving it an atypical form not usually found in an industrial slab. While the Quatie concept was originally set aside for the more technological look of Chatype’s final image, Jeremy revived this face from its dormant state and refined it for its commercial release in 2013. Inspired by the strange, blocky lettering on the sides of a set of a set of plastic kitchen containers in my childhood home, 8th Avenue is a sophisticated, somewhat syncopated font with a retro look and feel that at the same time brings a very modern attitude to your design. 8th Avenue works well as display font for packaging, headlines and logos. Those pastel turquoise plastic boxes from the early 1950s, with white screen printed letters reading FLOUR, SUGAR, COFFEE etc. on one side were a simple quiet presence in our home back then and for decades after. Seeing them, even that soft blue-green colour felt like home. SUGAR, the soul survivor of that set has become one of those mundane items of daily life that somehow become simple icons of another time, ripe with memories. Obviously I had to make a font. Private Sans is a three styles family of humanistic sans serif based on broad pen calligraphy. It can be used in blogs, e-mails, personal Web pages -- the places where author wants to show his personal attitude and invite visitors to enter his intimate space. A couple of years ago, I walked the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail in Japan. At the start of the walk, I stayed in a nice guesthouse in Tanabe city, which lies in Wakayama prefecture. I wouldn’t mention all of this, if it didn’t have something to do with the font name: Wakayama prefecture is THE mandarin orange (Mikan) growing area of Japan and the owner of the guesthouse had just picked a bagful of mikan, which he shared with me. So, I had to think of that when I made this font. Mikan is a nice, rounded family of fonts. Both styles come with alternative a’s (and accented a’s), which some people prefer for Children’s books.

This is a font imitating the stage of outline construction of letters using drawing tools - compass and ruler. It is very geometric (with auxiliary lines, axes, centers of circles, tangents, and conjugation of circles), although the circles are somewhat compressed from four sides. The second style, which plays the role of Bold style, is a hatched version of the Regular style. The font has very small elements that appear in a sufficiently large size, so it is better to use it for large compositions, in particular, advertisements, posters, large headings, etc. The family is named "Khachatur" after the name of the father of designer Ruben Tarumian — architect Khachatur Hakobyan, his first master.

The original idea for Alda came from exploring an alternative approach to generating different typeface weights by adapting the characteristics of physical objects. I was interested to find out how far this could be pushed before the letters became a parody of what they referenced. Initially I took this treatment very literally, with the boldest weight expressing the tension of bent steel, and the lightest being as spineless as a rubber band. This allowed me to infuse each weight with unique characteristics, where the bold is robust and angular, and the light is delicate and soft.

No, I don’t have a fictional friend, nor an imaginary one. Never had! But that name popped up in my head and I used it for this font. Fictional Friend font is a handwritten ‘comic book’ font - sort of. It’s very legible, soft and rounded and comes with all the accents you want!

Billboard is a swinging family of six fonts. The all-caps letters are soft and round but the letter shapes will keep your layout in order. I don’t know about the weather on your side of the globe, but here it is mighty cold! I was trying out a new technique of font-making AND I was craving a pumpkin spice latte, so I named this font Spiced Pumpkin. Spiced Pumpkin is a rounded, thin, all caps typeface with a heart warming, ice melting attitude. It looks good on product packaging, book covers and postcards, so (in other words) give it a whirl and see what you’ll end up with!

When work started on the design of Gelica, there wasn't the same glut of retro-ish soft serifs there is today, and if I'd managed to complete it quicker, it might have been more trendsetter than bandwagon jumper, but that's the way it goes sometimes! I still think it's useful and unique enough to be a worthwhile addition to your typographic arsenal. Although obviously influenced by Cooper, it actually owes more to the lesser known Goudy Heavyface and Ludlow Black, particularly in the concave serifs. I wanted the family to be friendly and approachable, but not overly cutesy, and usability was always the prime concern. A nice weight range with matching italics was a must, along with useful OpenType features, and various figure styles. This is a display family first and foremost, but is also comfortable at smaller sizes for longer copy, and so works well in a supporting role to a more exuberant titling font.
