946 is a multilingual techno-style family developed by Berlin-based type designer Roman Wilhelm (RomanType). While more and more text families have recently been extended to a multilingual and multi-script level, not so much attention has been given to the more decorative styles. The 946 family does exactly that. A lot of care has been given to the various diacritics: they were designed a little more brutal, a little more European than with some other fonts of this category. Do also watch out for the non-Latin legs of this family. 946 is inspired by electronic music. When Roman found a second-hand Roland TR-606 drum machine in a store in his hometown back in 1995, he started to hang out with would-be DJs and musicians, trying to play the beats that went around the globe. When he started to study visual communication three years later, he was assigned the matriculation number of 946, which has now become the name of this family. Norberto, a CastleType original, is based on a Russian design from the late 19th century that in turn appears to be based on Bodoni. However, Norberto is a much warmer design than most Bodonis, with many soft touches such as very gentle curves from the serif at the top of B, D, P, and R; a jaunty cap on the ‘A’ (and Cyrillic ‘El’, ‘De’, etc); charmingly quaint numerals; hairline accents, and other subtleties that make it a wonderful addition to the Modern typefaces. Ballet Mechanique is a custom designed font for musician Jeroen Borrenbergs, aka Ballet Mechanique. For his upcoming record releases Jeroen asked me to create a special font for him. As co-founder and graphic designer at Stoere Binken Design he creates his own artwork and therefor had very specific wishes. The font should be warm, soft and have soul. He gave me some sketches for his logo that I should use as a starting point. The result is a very narrow, kind of techno, monocased font called "Ballet Mechanique" (what else). After having served his purpose, Jeroen Borrenbergs allowed his font to be sold publicly. Jeroen Borrenberg’s debut work, in 1996, received hugely praising reviews. Muzik Magazine made Evolutionary Entities techno single of the month, Laurent Garnier and Mister C constantly played it in their sets and Morgan Geist just said “I won’t do a review here - let me just encourage all of y’all to listen to and/or pick up the new Eevolute 12″. Beautiful stuff - complex, melodic, soaked in just enough reverb to take it to another room. Check or regret.”

Labyrindo is inspired on the classic Labyrinth. The oldest known labyrinth is 3200 years old and is to be found in Greece. The mythological king Minos held the monstrous son of his wife ‘Minotaurus’ prison in a labyrinth. Much later the labyrinth made his appearance in the medieval churches, this time as a pattern on the church floor. During the Italian renaissance the multiple gate labyrinth came in fashion. Paths led trough green hedges in beautiful palace gardens. These hedges where perfectly cut in rectangular shapes. Mainly meant as an aesthetic statement. Besides the origin of the physic labyrinth, it has always been a great source of story-telling and myths. I mention a few personal favourites (film) like, Pan’s Labyrinth (a journey to the underworld), Labyrinth (with David Bowie) and the Shining with Jack Nicholson (where a horrific scene takes place in a labyrinth). Not the most cheerful stories but fascinating and intriguing. A Labyrinth is mind boggling and mysterious but wonderful. I made graphic translation in this typeface.

Escalope is a hand-drawn font with a quirky and unique personality: low midline, unicase, all-caps, matching icons, textures, and the playful Stylistic Sets. 'Escalope Soft' has smooth outlines and sharp terminals. 'Escalope Crust One' is relatively clean but rugged, with an ink stamp outcome. 'Escalope Crust Two' is harsh in texture, with large coarse grains in its jagged outlines. 'Escalope Crust Three' is rather heavy-built, stout, defined, and less grainy. While its seemingly-idiosyncratic Latin design eliminates the excessive usage of serifs and offsets the visual effects of several geometrically-intense glyphs, its Times Romanesque proportions gives a full nod to the beginnings of Latin types and produces an overall stable look-and-feel of a classical Serif style, making it suitable for both text and display applications. Liberal spacing is maintained throughout to match that of the Arabic text and is further supplemented by a careful implementation of a typical Latin kerning. The overall design of this font, including metrics and dimensions, was intended to make its Latin harmonize well with most other Arabetics foundry fonts. Arabetics Latte fully supports MS 1252 Western and 1256 Arabic code pages, in addition to all the transliteration characters required by the ALA-LC Romanization tables. Evans was named after Walker Evans, an american photojournalist whose photographs often featured unassuming subjects – ordinary people, roadside scenes, and the subtle details of the American landscape. His ability to find beauty in simplicity and appreciate the mundane inspired Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini and Andrea Tartarelli to create this typographic family that aims to convey the ideals of journalistic storytelling: simplicity, clarity, and unpretentious honesty. Looking for a soothing, relaxed visual flow in body text, Evans was designed by gently narrowing classical proportions to answer the designers' need of maximizing the arrangement of lengthy text within confined spaces. Combining the vintage appeal of a semi-condensed old-style structure with a very slight transitional slanted axis resulted in text-oriented typeface with visual charm on both printed and digital pages. Subtly reducing the size of majuscules allowed the effect of an increased x-height, balancing space saving with increased readability at same point size. Using soft, semi-calligraphic shapes and keeping a generous letter spacing, the designers embraced a minimalist approach, aiming at a smooth reading experience. For maximum versatility, Evans provides two distinct variations tailored to different purposes: the Regular and the Narrow subfamilies. Fantini is the revival and elaborate update of a typeface called Fantan, made in-house and released in 1970 by a minor Chicago film type supplier called Custom Headings International. In the most excellent tradition of seriously-planned American film faces back then, CHI released a full complement of swashes and alternates to the curly art nouveau letters. Fantan didn't fare much among the type scene's big players back then, but it did spread like electricity among the smaller ones, the mom-and-pop type shops. But by the late 1980s, when film type was giving up the ghost, most smaller players in the industry were gone, in some cases along with little original libraries that existed nowhere else and became instant rarities on their way to be forgotten and almost impossible to resurrect for future technologies. Fantini is the fun and curly art nouveau font bridging the softness and psychedelia of the 1960s with the flirtatious flare of the 1970s like no other face does. Elements of psychedelia and funk flare out and intermix crazily to create cool, swirly letters packed with a lot of joy and energy. This is the kind of American art nouveau font that made its comeback in the late 20th century and is now a standard visual in the branding drive of almost every consumer product, from coffee labels to book and music covers to your favorite sugar or thirst-crunching fix. Here I am, once again digging up 60-year sign lettering and trying to reconcile it with the typography of my own time. The truth is I've had this particular Alf Becker alphabet in my sights for a few years now. But in the typical way chaos shuffles the days, Buffet Script and Whomp won the battle for my attentions way back when, then Storefront beat the odds by a nose a couple of years ago. Nevertheless, revisiting Alf Becker’s work is always a breath of fresh air for me, not to mention the ego boost I get from confirming that I can still hack my way through the challenges, which is something I think people ask themselves about more often as they get older. You can never tell what may influence your work, or in this case remind you to dig it out of dust drawers and finally mould it into one of your own experiences. On my recent visits to the States and Canada, I noticed that quite a few high-end steak houses try their best to recreate an urban American 1930s atmosphere. This is quite evident in their menus, wall art, lighting, music, and so on. The ambience says your money is well spent here, because your food was originally choice-cut by a butcher who wears a suit, cooked by a chef who may be your neighbour 20 minutes from downtown, and delivered by a waitress who can do the Charleston when the lights dim and who just wouldn't mind laughing with you over drinks at the bar later. So Steak is just that, a face for menus and wall art in those places that see themselves in the kind of jazzy, noirish world where one-liners rule and exclamation points are part of a foreign language. As is usual with my lettering-inspired faces, there is very little left of the original Alf Becker alphabet. Of course, the challenges present in bringing typographic functionality to what is essentially pure hand lettering gives the spirit of the original art a hell of a rollercoaster ride. But I think that spirit survived the adventure, and may in fact be even somewhat magnified here. This font is over 850 glyphs. It’s loaded with ligatures, swashes, ending forms, alternates, ascender and descender variations, and extended Latin language support. Steak comes in 3 versions.
