This typeface was inspired by Gering and Remboldt's work during the late 1490s. Their printing concern, the Soleil d'or in Paris, was one of the printing business to engage in the use of blackletter printing, when the rest of the Parisian printers where using humanist influenced roman typefaces. This peculiar backwards trend was really one of the original examples of "retro", taking advantage of the desires of the more conservative northern Europe that had not yet embraced the newer roman types.

An image spotted online showed a rendering of a ladies’ fashions storefront that had appeared in the Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company’s 1939 brochure. The signage consisted of the hand lettered word ‘Apparel’, and was done in a variant of the Art Deco stencil style of lettering that’s most recognizable in Futura Black. From these few sign letters came the inspiration for a digital font of the same name, Apparel JNL – which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

F .H. Ernst Schneidler, type designer and teacher, originally designed Schneidler Old Style in 1936 for the Bauer foundry. I am a firm believer in the fact that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So, for the last 10 years (ever since I became a father), I have been serving my family a healthy breakfast. I live in The Netherlands, so the main portion of breakfast is bread, but I try to serve something ‘nice’ every day. Like strawberries, yoghurt with banana and brown sugar (not too much sugar!), oatmeal porridge or granola. I myself like Indonesian fried rice (nasi goreng) for breakfast, but I am afraid my kids won’t eat that in the morning… Power Breakfast is a handmade display font. Yes, it is wobbly, yes, it is uneven, but that’s what’s so darn good about it!

Nyfors was a sudden idea. I noticed an ad in a magazine, with some handtexted words. I don't recall what the ad was about, neither the words. When I later on tried to remember how the single characters looked like and began to draw them, the result wasn't bad at all. I am not longer sure that they resemble the characters in the ad, but it doesn't matter. Nyfors is a nice handtexted typeface, whatever its origin. There is a small stream in Tyresö where I live and work, called Nyfors. During some centuries there was a center of small scale industries along it, and they used its water to run their machinery. The typeface has its name from that stream. Nyfors was released in 1995.

Farmer's Marker is an ode to the hobby-farmer and their honest and hardworking (but not too serious) lifestyle. The font reflects a vision of a farmer who quickly scrawls down her produce (72 Eggs + 20L of Milk + 2kg Honey) before she heads off to the market to do her best to sell what she has farmed. It is a casual, freehand, marker script that doesn't take itself too seriously. It is hand drawn by me, then meticulously perfected in Illustrator while leaving in just enough small imperfections that the font retains it's humanistic, hand-drawn and personal feel. Cleveden was inspired by some lettering sighted on a neglected and somewhat tarnished brass plaque, affixed to an elderly office building. The elegance and character (somehow playful and formal at the same time) of the letterforms shone through the tarnished state of the plaque. As an aside the brass plaque in question was on the former business premises of a long established firm of accountants. We suspect the ethics of that profession would preclude us identifying which one. Our efforts to identify their engraver have proven unavailing. Trithemius, a 15th century Abbott, and influential counselor to Emperor Maximilian I, was also an author who wrote both histories and the first printed work on cryptography which gained him much adverse notoriety. He has been long regarded as a mystic and some of his works were therefore banned. However, it may have been his intention to cloak his cryptology essays in mystical writing to keep people from easily grasping the subject matter, which it has been recently demonstrated, at heart was really cryptological methodology. This font is based on a printed version of the Polygraphiae -- a text that included many methods of encryption. The examplar for this font in that text was described as anothor method of Alchemists recording secrets.

Think of Garamouche as Garamond's drunken cousin. This font replicates a long lost document ravaged by time and the elements (with a little sloppy printing for good measure.)
