An American Scotch remixed in 27 fonts Mencken has twenty seven styles, divided into three widths, three optical sizes, romans and italics. Generally, optical size typeface families belong to a same common construction. It falls into the same category of type classification, while presenting different x-heights or contrasts. Mencken is unique because it is designed according to different axis and optical sizes. Firstly, Mencken Text is a low-contrast transitional typeface, designed on an oblique axis, asserting horizontal with featuring open counters. Its capitals follow Didots to better harmonize the rest of the family. On the other side of the spectrum, Mencken Head (and narrow variations) is designed on a vertical axis, high contrast, in a contemporary Didot style. The Mencken is therefore a typeface answering to different sorts of uses, whose design is different according to its uses: from oblique axis in small size to vertical axis in large sizes. Vertical proportions (x-height, capitals height, etc.) were calibrated to be compatible with many Typofonderie typeface families. Lucie Lacava and I followed the idea launched by Matthew Carter few years ago for some of his typefaces intended for publications. From Baltimore Sun’s project to Typofonderie’s Mencken It is a bespoke typeface for American newspaper The Baltimore Sun started at the end of 2004 which marks the beginning of this project. The story started with a simple email exchange with Lucie Lacava then in charge of redesigning the American East Coast newspaper. As usual, she was looking for new typeface options in order to distinguish the redesign that she had started. At the time of its implementation, a survey of the newspaper’s readers has revealed that its previous typeface, drawn in the mid-1990s, was unsatisfactory. The Mencken was well received, some reader responses was particularly enjoyable: “It’s easier to read with the new type even though the type is designed by a French.” Why it is called Mencken? The name Mencken is a tribute to H. L. Mencken’s journalistic contributions to The Sun. According to the London Daily Mail, Mencken ventured beyond the typewriter into the world of typography. Because he felt Americans did not recognize irony when they read it, he proposed the creation of a special typeface to be called Ironics, with the text slanting in the opposite direction from italic types, to indicate the author’s humour. Affirming his irreverence, the Mencken typeface does not offer these typographic gadgets. Henry Louis Mencken (1880 — 1956) was an American journalist, satirist, cultural critic and scholar of American English. Known as the “Sage of Baltimore”, he is regarded as one of the most influential American writers and prose stylists of the first half of the twentieth century. Haarlemmer is a recreation of a never-produced Jan Van Krimpen typeface that goes one step beyond authentic: it shows how he wanted it to be designed in the first place. The original, drawn in the late 1930s, was created for the Dutch Society for the Art of Printing and Books and was to be used to set a new edition of the Bible, using Monotype typesetting. Hence the problem: fonts for metal typesetting machines like the Linotype and Monotype had to be created within a crude system of predetermined character width values. Every letter had to fit within and have its spacing determined by a grid of only 18 units. Often, the italic characters had to share the same widths as those in the roman design. Van Krimpen believed this severely impaired the design process. The invasion of Holland in World War II halted all work on the Bible project, and the original Haarlemmer never went into production. Flash forward about sixty years. Frank E. Blokland, of The Dutch Type Library, wanted to revive the original Haarlemmer, but this time as Van Krimpen would have intended. Blokland reinterpreted the original drawings and created a typeface that matched, as much as possible, Van Krimpen's initial concept. While Van Krimpen's hand could no longer be on the tiller, a thorough study of his work made up for his absence. The result is an exceptional text family of three weights, with complementary italic designs and a full suite of small caps and old style figures. Van Krimpen would be proud.

How does one arrive at a font name? With the thousands of digital typefaces available, it's not an easy process. Bandleader JNL was modeled from the hand-lettered title on a piece of sheet music called "Largo", which means "slow tempo". Since the names "Largo" and "Tempo" were already taken, what other musical theme would fit? The lettering is in an Art Deco style, and Big Band was all the rage of the Art Deco period; therefore "Bandleader". Sometimes the road to naming a font takes on many twists and turns but the end result is always gratifying.

The type design for Impecunious JNL comes from the 1939 sheet music for "You Don't Know How Much You Can Suffer (Until You Fall in Love)". The name comes from another piece of sheet music, 1899's "Impecunious Davis" [a piece of late 19th century tripe demeaning Black Americans]. However, the word "impecunious" was intriguing. According to the website Merriam-Webster.com, the simple definition of impecunious means "having little or no money". Since we've all been in that spot at one time or another, it became a perfect font name. Impecunious JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Channel B was derived from the logo for Channel B, a British entertainment internet channel, anchored by former Soccer AM presenter Tim Lovejoy at www.dailymotion.com/channelbee. I’m not sure what it was in 2008 when I first ran across the logo, but that elegant capital B seemed to cry out for a font to support it. Many of the capitals, numbers and other glyphs of Channel B are split into a top and bottom, but not all. The tall, condensed capitals are contrasted to the rounded lowercase (derived from the bottom half of the B, rotated 180°).

Take The Money is a wonky all caps font, made with a Sharpie pen. The name was inspired by something I read in the newspaper: apparently a Danish artist received €72.000 from a museum to create two works of art. The works of art should depict the average income of someone from Austria and someone from Denmark - in real money. The museum then loaned him the €72.000 and told him he'd receive €3.300 for his work. The artist decided that €3.300 would merely cover the costs, so he delivered two empty canvases and called the work: Take The Money And Run.
