The 1938 movie musical "Carefree" starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers featured the song "Change Partners" by Irving Berlin. A copy of the sheet music for this song had the title hand lettered in a wonderful tri-line design that has been recreated in the digital typeface Fancy Dancing JNL.

Organic was designed to be highly legible and flexible. I wanted to create a very refined sanserif that could be used for display or body copy, for print or digital. The Opentype flexibility allowed me to expand the look of the family with alternate characters, small caps, oldstyle figures, and ligatures.

A popular caps-only type of late Victorian times was called Mural, brought out by Boston Type Foundry in 1890. We always liked it, drew a lowercase for it, and then strengthened it by adding a bit of weight. It now has a nice, understated retro look for paragraphs of copy.

Authentic copy of the original, with a couple of minor changes to the caps, making them fit better. Although made for the American market by an American typefounder, we found this font in a York, England printshop when we went on a second visit to the famous DeLittle Wood Type factory.

Chancery Lane is a condensed cursive with a breezy, flowing feel. Many of the lowercase characters join up, some uppercase ones too, and the two fonts are slantier than many other chancery-inspired faces, inclined at almost 20°. Each glyph has slightly rounded corners to bestow softness and warmth. The typeface emerged from a study of pen lettering, italic scripts and chancery hands – down a rabbit hole and along the Chancery Lane. The research ranged from early cancellaresca manuscripts to contemporary fonts, and also calligraphic work, most notably that of Indian artist Mayank Baranwal whose lowercase letters inspired many of the Chancery Lane glyphs. Uppercase characters have been designed to harmonise with the lowercase rather than providing overly ornamental openers, true to origins that were functional rather than fancy. Both the capitals and the uppercase alternates are unfussy and relatively simple, and the lowercase swash characters are similarly understated, only modestly flourished. Stylistic alternates and lowercase swash characters can be accessed using OpenType-aware applications or font management software.

Georgia was originally designed in 1996 by Matthew Carter and hand-tuned for the screen by Tom Rickner. Bronto is a typeface that mutated many times: it went from being morphologically conventional, to have soft features, to finally have some inverted contrasts that made it more dynamical; but all this without losing sight of the meaning of a typefamily, and the aim pursued by this work: Bronto doesn’t behave as a piece of art, but as a tool. In some weights, this typeface possesses fluffy characteristics and is boldly bighead, while in other versions is slightly contrasted and controlled; this in order to maintain the essential features of the typefamily along the versatility and usability of the 20 variations that composed it. Bronto it’s inspired in neo humanists typographies of the 20th century, and in Chilean lettering. This kind of work was made by the spontaneity of the paintbrush, which gave an inverted contrast to some characters. Rawhide is a fresh digitization and expansion of a very popular (yet uncredited) early 1970s film type called Yippie, which was commonly used in wild west cartoons and comics. Publishers of Lucky Luke, the famous Belgian comic by Morris, used these bouncy letters for the titling on a few of their soft cover editions, and different variations of it were used throughout the 1970s and 1980s by cartoon classic Looney Tunes and a variety of wild west animations and comics. It slowly disappeared without fanfare when desktop publishing became the norm. Here it is again now for the computer age, available as a high quality font with a complete character set that accommodates more than 20 Latin-based languages. In short, Rawhide comes with an impressive track record, and is a must for any funny cowboy design or off the wall wild west layout. Habana Deco ML was inspired by a hand-lettered sign on the stucco exterior of a small pharmacy in modern-day city of Havana, Cuba. It, in turn, was based on the fat-faced Art Deco lettering of the late 20s and early 30s, especially the Futurismo posters out of Italy, as well as alphabets designed in The Netherlands, France, USA and even the Soviet Union. There are 24 stylistic alternate glyphs (SALT), many inspired by a variety of these sources, including a couple from the sign in the front of the Congress Hotel in South Beach, Miami. The others features of the Habana Deco include 363 glyphs, 184 kerning pairs (KERN), 14 ornaments and shapes (ORNM) and 15 discretionary ligatures (DLIG). This is a font with which you can have fun.
