The new font “The Best We Could Do” was created by artist and author Thi Bui who used the font in the graphic novel by the same name. The font is brush-script handwriting font which displays human personality rendered with bold confident strokes full of passion and expression. Chank’s work on this font captured Bui’s distinctive textual style and also saved her a ton of headache and time in inking. A debut memoir that tells the story of one family’s journey from their war-torn home in Vietnam in the 1970s to their new lives in America, the autobiographical book is lauded for its heart-breaking exploration of identity, family, and home. This Charles Borges' script takes full advantage of the Open Type format with several automatic ligatures that occur as you type for a nicer fit. This font was inspired by the so-called Litterarum latinarum, quas italicas, cursoriasque vocant, scribendum Ratio (Louvain 1540), a manual intended for calligraphers by the well known scientist Gerhard Mercator. It was a magnificent “Cancellaresca corsiva” design, enriched with many alternates, final loops and ligatures. We have added a lot of accented and other characters required for modern use that did not exist in the original.

Dottie is based on a matrix of dots. It was inspired by the output of old, cheap, dot-matrix printers. In addition to Dottie-Regular with round dots, the family group includes DottieDiamond with diamond dots, DottieSquareTwo with square dots that do not overlap, and DottieSquare with square dots that overlap to create horizontal and vertical bars.

This is not an historically accurate font but rather one intended capture the spirit of ancient Roman manual type. It was inspired by various patterns used in documents and books created by Latin scribes between the second and fourth centuries. They used either calamus and ink on papyrus, or a pointed metal stick on wax tablets. We have created the font for contemporary use; distinguishing between U and V, I and J, which had no meaning for ancient Latin scribes, and adding thorn, Oslash, Lslash, W, Y and common accented characters that did not exist at the time. Rasteroids is a typographic flashback to computing of the mid 1980s, when 9-pin dot-matrix printers were the state of the art, and most home computer displays were TVs hooked up to RF modulators. Rasteroids not only captures the dot-matrix printer look, but recreates the rasterized appearance of text on those lower-resolution monitors. Unlike that dot matrix type of yore, Rasteroids does have some variation in character width, and is legible in small blocks of copy. Still, it is best used sparingly, or as a special effect.

Smack, from American designer Jill Bell, is oriented toward a young generation who does not want to mind the rules. The font invites unconventional and playful use. The figures seem to be almost coincidentally shaped. Letters alternate between thin and thick strokes alternate and are accompanied by fine dots which almost look like accidental drops of ink on the paper. Ziro expresses itself boldly and spontaneously. It consists of two different sets of capitals to help create natural handwriting effect. I’m not particularly fond of beans. I do eat them, but they’re not my idea of a delicacy… But this font has ‘fairy tale’ feeling to it, and I liked the name Beanstalker. Beanstalker is a hand made font (I used a fineliner to draw the glyphs). It is quite neat and organized, but does come with some rough edges and a bit of texture.

Now here's a font that is named Like Butterflies, but has got nothing to do with butterflies! What? Why? Well, I recently heard the song "Even flow" by Pearl Jam and took a trip down memory lane - back to my early twenties. I remember how the lyrics affected me, and had an impact on how my life changed the years to follow. Maybe the style of the font does not reflect the inner meaning of the song, but it does reflect a look back in time for me - and the change that took place. This font gets its inspiration from the typography of the Manuale ad Usum (1721), printed by Jesuit missionaries who worked at the beginning of the XVIII century with communities of "Guarani" native indians from the Northeast region of Argentina. It is a manual of sacraments published by Paulo Restivo and some collaborators among the native population. This manual features the peculiarity of being the first printed piece where there is a record of the place where it was printed: at the Loreto mission.
