When teaching font-making at the Art Institute of Tucson, I give my students plenty of lab time to come up with design ideas. I designed Pucky while one class created their fonts. It came about through an idea for a capital A: sort of a triangle with two round sides and a crossbar formed by a circle falling out. (You can see it here.) In drawing that, I hit upon the idea of making the tops of the alphabet sharp and square and the bottoms rounded. (See the whole alphabet here.) Pucky suggests both circus and psychedelia. Hmmmm, does anybody have an “in” at Cirque du Soleil?

Colin is a fresh, somewhat futuristic geometric sans serif type with a large x-height that, to me, communicates both seriousness and cheerfulness. It supports 70 languages incl. monotonic Greek and comes in 7 weights with a small number of alternate glyphs (ss01) for more flexibility. It features fractions, old style and tabular figures. Colin works great in titles, displays and short paragraphs. And where does it come from? To be honest, the reason for this font is a selfish one. I wanted a typeface where my initials (n and c) look identical, just rotated by 90 degrees. That didn’t completely work but, hey, it’s pretty close.

I love going to flea markets and second-hand stores; in fact a lot of the furniture in our home is second hand (or pre-loved, a euphemism I find rather peculiar). I personally believe that buying used products is a good way to help this planet, as no new stuff needs to be made and the old stuff gets a second life. Fleabitten is a ‘western style’ serif font. You could use it to pimp the posters for your line dance festival, but hey, be creative! I am sure you’ll find some good use for this very nice pre-loved font. Yes, pre-loved: I loved it first!

The last couple of years felt like I was living in a bad dream: I witnessed crazy leaders, climate change and now Covid. I usually name my fonts after things that affect me and this one is not different. Dreamworld is a font I made with a cheap marker pen I liberated from my kids’ pencil box (I will put it back, pinky promise…). It is a bit rough, but also very easy to read and distinctive enough to make your work stand out. Of course it comes with extensive language support (let me mention Vietnamese again…) and two sets of alternate glyphs, that cycle as you type.

Linotype CoolWool is part of the Take Type Library, featuring winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest. This font was designed by A. Leonardi and P. Wollein, who took their inspiration from clothing labels and care instructions. CoolWool is designed to look like it was stitched, a style of typeface which goes back to the hand embroidery of the time of Biedermeier. CoolWool, however, is a distinctly modern font with a technical feel. The font is not suited for longer texts, but CoolWool is good for shorter texts and headlines, especially because of the possibilities allowed by its three different styles, regular, stone washed (bold) and Cotton Club (outline).

Stuffed Shirt JNL acquires its name from a term popularized during the years when the Art Deco period flourished. The Great Depression further widened the gap between the 'haves' and the 'have nots'. Occasionally, some of those that 'had' (and some who pretended they did) came off as standoffish, egotistical and pompously arrogant. Such individuals were referred to as a "stuffed shirt"; a blowhard who thought he was better than others. In this case, Stuffed Shirt JNL is no more than a dual-line adaptation of Playwright JNL, itself an interpretation of the classic Broadway type design in a way that emulates the hand lettering of old-time sign painters.

Delikaat is made up of thin & thick strokes - a version of Cubo Font's former Delicate. As a graphic designer, sometimes it’s impossible not to be inspired by the Swiss Style, specifically the work of Armin Hofmann, who is one of its best exponents. Grids and grotesk and neo-grotesk typefaces are a fundamental part of the tools that make this aesthetic possible. A visual language that has caused full admiration since we were students. Découpé Based on a French children’s play from 1906. In a car boot sale André Toet found a funny looking box containing a lot of cut out cardboard figures, in fact it looked a bit like a geometric puzzle! He played around a bit and succeeded to create a workable typeface with it ! The interesting thing about this particular font is, that in fact it’s organized chaos. The 26 letters of the alphabet are a mix between caps and lowercases, so within one word caps and lowercases will be used next to each other. It’s a very useful font for different projects. The inspiration source for Verre Monogram is an unusual hand-drawn letterset from a vintage embroidery publication which comes off more as a Drop Cap or Initial lettering style than monogram. Although its original intention is uncertain, it has many possibilities. This monogram design from the early 1900’s has been updated from a Capitals only to a Caps/Smallcaps set with decorative linking ornamentation. The unique stained glass look of the letterforms allows for a lot of play with manual coloring, and the newly created linking ornaments offer interesting bracelet monogram design options. Sticks was originally designed as a custom logo for a sour gummy candy. It was then expanded to a full font, with numbers, symbols, foreign accents, and even a few ligatures. An all caps font, the capital letters are even more capital than the lower case capital letters. As a bold font, it's ideal for parties, flyers, greeting cards, posters, headlines, and snipes. It doesn't take itself too seriously, so it's well suited for comic, cartoony uses. The S is taller than the other letters and gives it it's unique quirky Stick-like personality. Gomme Sans is a wide and masculine sans-serif family for text designed by Ryoichi Tsunekawa and the whole family consists of 6 weights from ExtraLight to ExtraBold and their matching Italics. The basic concept of this family is not only to make an impact by masculine, squarish letter form but also to be legible and readable even on small size screen by the sophisticated design, and their large x-heights. Geometry circle is a heading/display type, built with the intent to illustrate and attract the viewer, not to be used for long text. The inspiration comes from the Futurist movement typefaces, especially from Marinetti’s own workshop on new age typography of that time (Italy 1920). The typeface is composed of only capital letters. The letters are of an unique geometric design taking the basic 64 grid system and subtracting the shape of a circle form each glyph in a unique way to form a letter. There is a full complement of typography symbols as well as a support for Central and Eastern European symbols and characters.

Program is a type designer’s typeface. It’s about the craft of typeface design and the particular details and effects that type designers fret over when they design type. It mixes different structures, stem endings, and weight distributions not usually employed in a single family of fonts. It features both rounded edges evoking the effects of reproduction, and ink traps, the technique used to counteract that effect. The idea was to create a series of fonts with strong individualistic features, challenging the constraints of a central theme that is usually imposed on a family of fonts, while still relating to each other in terms of overall look and feel.

This is my first fontrelease in 2021, and it's one of those "things will get better soon" kinda fonts (Here I am thinking about 2020, which was a year I am glad we just left!) Anyway, the first thing I ate in 2021 (not counting the "kransekage" after midnight) was a delicious and lovely tuna sandwich - or as I called it: Party Toast! Heh-heh! :) Well, it is a playful font with it's jumpy and slightly quirky letters. I've added 5 different versions of each letter and they automatically cycles as you type. I cross my fingers for a 2021 where everything gets back to normal!

We have been in lockdown for a long time now. The schools were also closed, meaning my kids had to stay at home. This week the schools reopened (not a day too soon!), which means my kids can play with their friends again and learn something too! My wife and I pack their lunchboxes every day and always add some fruit for snack time. That fruity snack inspired me to create this rather messy font! Fruity Snack is a handmade display font. It looks wobbly, comes with awkward angles and rough bits. It also comes with extensive language support (including Vietnamese) and 2 sets of alternates for the lower case letters.

Banco was the first typeface work of French designer Roger Excoffon and was released in 1952. The strong forms look as though they were rolled out of sheet metal and feature upright, tapering strokes. The slight slant, the varying heights of stroke ends, and the relationships between line and curve give Banco font its sense of liveliness and dynamism. Excoffon did not design a matching lower case alphabet for his capitals, but this was accomplished later by Phill Grimshaw, who also designed the light weight. He deliberately 'underdesigned' the lower case forms, producing a more reserved alphabet based on the design ideas of the original.

Mollis Gothic is inspired by medieval gothic calligraphy. The gothic calligraphy is classical and traditional, I want to add something modern to it. So the letters are simplified as lines and without the handwriting feel, just like a sans font. Meanwhile, the gothic calligraphy visual look remained. It expands the usage area because of the modern feel of this font, such as the package, titles, logo, poster design, etc. In September 2021, we created the thin weight. Although Mollis Gothic Thin is from the font family, the kerning set and capital letters’ height are not as same as the regular weight for suiting the thin font’s usage situation.
