Hermann Zapf and Akira Kobayashi redeveloped Palatino for the 21st Century, creating Palatino nova. The Palatino nova family also includes revised versions of Aldus (now called Aldus nova). A bold weight is added into the font family. The character set support is similar to Palatino nova, but Greek and Cyrillic are not available in book weight fonts.

A 1928 menu for the restaurant “Rotisserie Du Cardinal” had the word “Cardinal” hand lettered in quite an unusual Art Nouveau type design consisting of thick and thin lines using angles to form the letter shapes. This engaging headline face is based on a rather pudgy typeface named “Bullion Shadow”, which was originally released somewhere on the cusp between the hippie and disco eras, and was equally at home in both. In 1913, Leipzig-based foundry C. F. Ruehl released a hot-metal font called Caesar-Schrift which was cut by the engraver and medalist Georg Schiller (1858-1937). Adonis New is a considerate update of the Adonis serif. This dense serif with smooth lines has new, bolder styles, and it supports Greek now. In addition, Natalia Vasilyeva reworked the main styles and made them fresher and more accurate. Adonis New works well in bookset, particularly in fiction and humanities. The prolific hand lettering of Samuel Welo is showcased in his “Studio Handbook for Artists and Advertisers” (published in both 1927 and 1960). A thick and thin Art Deco design in the 1960 edition – somewhat reminiscent of Futura Black (but with significant differences) is now available as Sign Work Deco JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

A 1932 fan magazine from Spain entitled “Films Selectos” (“Select Films”) had those words hand lettered in a decorative Art Deco type style that was a cross between the “Futura Black” style of stencil influenced display lettering and “Fiesta” lettering. This hybrid design is now available digitally as Dance and Sing JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Bold Bavarian is a heavy version of my Royal Bavarian that was commissioned by King Ludwig 1st of Bavaria about 1834. I always thought, that I should design a really bold version and now finally I did. But I think it should not be mixed together with the normal version. The October 5, 1935 issue of “Universal Weekly” (a publication detailing current film releases from Universal) was promoting the film “Remember Last Night”. Hand lettering used for this advertisement was an ultra-bold sans serif design with chamfered corners and some stylized characters. Lasky Productions in which the titles of the upcoming films were hand lettered in an elegant Art Nouveau spurred serif style. A small book entitled “Portfolio of Alphabet Designs for Artists, Architects, Designers & Craftsmen” [published in 1938 by Irene K. Ames] contained a number of pages displaying hand lettered alphabet examples. One sample in particular stood out for its bold Art Deco look and unusual design. Jeff Levine acquired a set of original water-applied decals made by the Duro Decal Company of Chicago (now Duro Art Industries) and painstakingly recreated one of the classic hand-drawn typefaces from the Duro line. Named after the street where the company is located, Juneway JNL is an authentic reproduction for the computer-based designer.

The sans serif type style for the specialty font Nameplate JNL was given a serif treatment and is now Hotel District JNL complete with a full character set. Originally inspired by two Art Deco-era metal door signs saying "Men" and "Ladies", the thin lettering lends itself well to period pieces as well as contemporary design work.

Description: Snappy Fingers is a remake of a really old font, called Joe Schmoe, which I made for my other foundry years ago. In the December, 1947 issue of Modern Screen magazine, a feature article showcased actress Deborah Kerr with the title “Imported”. The typography used for the headline of the article was a hand lettered, extra-bold, sans serif stencil design. This lettering became the inspiration for Imported Goods JNL, which is now available in both regular and oblique versions.

A quirky and unusual Art Deco monoline typeface can be found within the pages of the Esterbrook Drawlet Pen instruction book [circa the 1940s]. Drawlet was the direct competitor to Speedball Lettering pen nibs. The sheet music for the 1914 Word War I comic novelty song "When the War Breaks Out in Mexico I'm Going to Go to Montreal" had one of those overly-worded song titles popular during this period (13!), along with interesting sans serif hand lettering. It now debuts digitally as Conscription JNL in both regular and oblique versions.
