Irk Bitig or Irq Bitig (Old Turkic: 𐰃𐰺𐰴 𐰋𐰃𐱅𐰃𐰏‎), known as the Book of Omens or Book of Divination in English, is a 9th-century manuscript book on divination that was discovered in the "Library Cave" of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, China, by Aurel Stein in 1907, and is now in the collection of the British Library in London, England. The book is written in Old Turkic using the Old Turkic script (also known as "Orkhon" or "Turkic runes"); it is the only known complete manuscript text written in the Old Turkic script. It is also an important source for early Turkic mythology.

I present Hatran as the last font of 2023. The Hatran script was used in what is now northern Iraq to write Hatran Aramaic, a Middle Aramaic dialect that was spoken in the region of Hatra and Assur in northeastern Mesopotamia from about the 3rd Century BC to the 3rd Century AD. Hatran Aramaic is also known as Aramaic of Hatra or Ashurian (Leššānā Assūrāyā \ ܠܫܢܐ ܐܣܘܪܝܐ), and first appeared in writing in 98 BC. The script is also known as the Hatran Aramaic script or Ashurian script. It appears mainly in texts found in the ruins of Hatra. There are also some texts in Hatran Aramaic from Assur and other places. It was discovered in 1912 by archaeologtists working in Hatra, which is near to the villages of Al-Hadar (الحضر) in the Nineveh Governorate (محافظة نينوى) of Iraq.

Arising from this disenchantment with traditional social standards, a small but effective means of protest arose that made no sound, yet spoke volumes - the pin button. Statements against the war in Vietnam, free love, drug use and other messages popped up on little metal discs pinned to tee shirts, suspenders, head band and hats. The Kennedy family is a completely original design, inspired by lettering discovered by George during his exploration of 16th century cartography, some years ago. The charm exhibited by these beautiful artifacts is as much reflected in the letterforms they employ as in the drawing style or content they present. After familiarizing himself with the offerings of the various printing centers of that period, George began work on a design which he called Marconova. This design continued to evolve until it began to take on the look of Dutch Oldstyle typefaces of a later period. At this point George re-christened his work-in-progress Kennedy, and added the Book, Book Italic and Small Cap companion typefaces. Only a small trace of its design ancestry is evident in the resulting typeface family. There is enough, however, to make them a unique entry in the collection of distinguished contemporary designs.

Ever since I first designed Ellida in 2005, that elaborate script in the tradition of the 18th-century English calligrapher George Bickham and the 19th-century American calligrapher Platt Rogers Spencer, I wanted to add a very high contrast cut to the family. I finally did so. But the result looks so much different to Ellida that I had to give it another name, hence "Eloise". Eloise should actually be written with a 'i' that has double dots, but that would be difficult for international use. Eloise is a beautiful first name not only for French girls. Pronounce: Ay-low-eese. If I would have had a daughter, I would have called her "Eloise" (with double dots!). But instead I have two phantastic sons, so I never got the chance to use it. Designed in 1950s Japan by Okanao & Kushiro, the perfect partnership until artistic temperaments drove them apart. The duo spent years crafting the font with the working title “Messenjā”, Okanao bringing technical expertise to craft letterforms, while Kushiro made it his life, obsessively working late into the night to check pages for errors. For him the project was never about making money, it was an artistic endeavor to reprint the great Western works of literature. When he found out Okanao had secretly sold the rights to the font for use as a logo for a major Japanese manufacturer, Kushiro burned all evidence of the designs in a fit of passionate fury. The two reportedly never spoke again. “Messenjā” was thought lost forever until a type specimen was discovered in a vintage typewriter box bought on eBay. It was originally inspired by my winter scarf knitting exploits. I discovered that making wool scarves was generating beautiful patterns and I wanted them to become a source of inspiration for a style. I made a few collages, and they became letters. Other characters came up with ease. It is readable, but long essays are not its main purpose. It is decorative and will look casual and very attractive on any ad as a title or a short phrase. It also demonstrates very good performance in automatic 3D generators, like Xara 3D maker, used in making examples of how this font can be utilised. It was designed to be thin, soft, with the capacity to cover empty space and to create a vibrant environment. Small characters are different from capital letters, they are stylistic alternates. Closely resembling a stencil version of Franklin Gothic but with its own unique characteristics, this design has been reinterpreted as Turntable Stencil JNL and is available in both regular and oblique versions. For trivia buffs, Dan Penn is a singer-songwriter-record producer, often collaborating with Dewey Lindon “Spooner” Oldham; both closely associated with the late Rick Hall’s Fame recording studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. In 1964, Hall started the Fame record label, and for a time it was distributed by Vee-Jay Records of Chicago, the first major Black-owned record label in the United States. Penn’s release was only the second for the new label; Fame 6402.
