At that time I realized that there were still many communities or people who really loved Western culture (Cowboy), Vintage Style in the 40s - 60s era and Classic Motorbike style (Caferacer). So I intend to combine these three concepts into a single font, and Motopica was born, which brings the spirit of the three styles, namely Western Cowboy, Vintage, Beer and motorbike. My personal handwriting has changed a number of times over the years. Just Another Hand is a narrow brush drawn handwriting font, inspired very loosely by the handwriting of my high school days. There's a little artistic license taken with Just Another Hand in the sense that while I never really wrote with a brush in high school, I wanted a cleaner stroke for this interpretation. A little personality, a little restraint... a style that works for all sorts of projects across the board. The Just Another Hand Pro family contains 659 characters per font. This font family has derived from a lettering creation for my wedding stationery. One of the most significant momentos for me and my wife Xana (hence the font name - Xanas Wedding). In 1978 I went to work at Mergenthaler as a letter drawer. Being an inquisitive sort I decided that I should take a stab at this type design 'stuff'. I drew 25 or 30 glyphs before the work found its way to a high shelf in a dark corner of my apartment. Just 23 years later I found the drawings on a different shelf, in a different home, in a different city and decided to finish what I had started. I'm still trying to deal with my predisposition toward procrastination but I've finished the font. The name of the font is the last name of somebody I played softball with before I moved to Beantown. Ronnie Geis was one of the courageous firefighters we lost on September 11th when the WTC collapsed.

Buddy is the new companion sans for Contenu, the book font family designed for my book on font design design. Originally, I called it Compagnon, but that seemed to pompous. Then I called it Aide, but that was too formal and dry. It's a loose, free, easy to read sans, so when my wife suggested Buddy, it clicked. This is the 4-font Buddy family of Regular, Italic, Bold, & Bold Italic. I made a new, more limited feature set for these fonts due to their designed usage, but there are still small caps, small cap figures, oldstyle figures, numerators, and denominators. The bold is closer to a black, and the italics are only slightly slanted obliques. If you need a strong black in caps, use the small caps of the bold.

DF Pigtail is the result of a curious marriage of the 'free'-form of writing with the fixed (mono) space for each character of the typewriter typeface. In the early sixties of the last century, typewriter typography became popular as a Fluxus vocabulary. The Fluxus art movement (in fact a Dada like follow up) which encouraged a do it yourself aesthetic, and valued simplicity over complexity and anti commercialism over the conventional market-driven approach. I was educated in the mid seventies when this form of typography was still very popular and was even applied in corporate design. This particular letter has been used by my teacher Jan Begeer to compose his design assignments. Recently I rediscovered this type and was struck by its pigtail similarity and drew it my way.

The Klutz AOE Pro Family was inspired by the plethora of naive hand drawn lettering becoming commonplace in modern advertising. What I hadn't seen was a family of hand drawn typefaces, in a range of widths and weights, with both alternate capitals as well as small caps character sets...and so Klutz Pro was born. The letterforms started with a few letters my daughter had drawn which I expanded on from there. Pulling from inspirations in retro cartoon titling and modern hand lettering playfulness, the full font was born, with weights and width to follow. Quirky, eclectic, and just a bit ridiculous, it lends itself to a range of design typesetting - although I must confess, even though it all began with the Regular width, the Extra Condensed styles are my personal favorites. Now here's a font that is named Like Butterflies, but has got nothing to do with butterflies! What? Why? Well, I recently heard the song "Even flow" by Pearl Jam and took a trip down memory lane - back to my early twenties. I remember how the lyrics affected me, and had an impact on how my life changed the years to follow. Maybe the style of the font does not reflect the inner meaning of the song, but it does reflect a look back in time for me - and the change that took place. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy the somewhat simple, handmade style of Like Butterflies and the 4 versions that works very well together! Please notice that each letter has got 5 slightly different versions to choose from!

A font from the tube: an individual handwriting with a slightly wet character. In this case, the “pen” was a tube of black paint. It’s easy to see that you can’t really write “beautifully” with it. Nevertheless, the “Tube Script” is a beautiful, personal handwriting whose clumsy origins are not at all obvious in small font sizes. But if it’s big enough, then all the peculiarities of the paint container misused as a writing implement become apparent. Sometimes the line is very thin and delicate, sometimes it’s just a thick blob meant to represent a letter, depending on how hard the tube was squeezed. A few spills are inevitable. These coincidences of painterly writing are what make this font so appealing. This creates organic forms, random effects, breaks, streaks, where the writer normally determines the form. As such, this font is a great match for anything organic, picturesque, handmade, personal, or even random, unpredictable, or just plain natural. Hundreds of ligatures make the letters appear in a different form each time depending on it’s combination. And more than a hundred alternate characters can be selected using the corresponding OpenType features, thus enabling even more variety in the typeface. This creates the typically restless, extremely varied impression of a really individual script – almost as if it were really handwritten.

Earlier this year, my eyes fell upon a discarded wedding invitation on the sidewalk. A closer look at it revealed that it had at one point been victimized by rain. Some of the fancy script letters were not quite broken, but sort of melted and run-down, while the rest were still somewhat intact. That's how Scroll was conceived, as an idea for a script where thicks and thins blend to produce a wet appearance. Unlike most available broken scripts, the Scroll script was originally drawn in its own juiced context, and not based on any existing script. This font is great for atmospheric antiquity, deep natural poetry, still life captioning, gothic music posters and collateral, or horror literature and poetry covers.

Monospaced become very popular among graphic designers. Nevertheless, I’ve noticed that in most cases that designers use monospaced typefaces is not because of their particular features caused by the strict rules of design — all characters share the same advanced width — rather because of it’s ‘electronic derived’ appearance. So, I decided to create a typeface that keeps the characteristics that, in my opinion attract designers to this particular sort of types, but deliberately break the main rule: characters do not share the same width — but they they look like they do! Characters are better balanced compared to truly monospaced types, giving more even typographic color while used in text setting. One weight might enough to please electronic type lovers. Designed in 2000.

I only had this bouncy curve and a photograph of a daily menu (Truite Meunière) I took outside an obscure Paris restaurant when starting the design of this font. But while working on it I suddenly started thinking about Jacques Tati the famous but almost forgotten french director of Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot, Jour des Fêtes, Mon Oncle, Playtime, Trafic etc. I thought about his bouncy walk and his hilarious ideas. The memories never left me while working on the font, so I decided to name the font after this great French moviemaker who gave me so many happy hours. Gaultier is the result of over 5 years of work on a typeface inspired by my favourite creators in European typography – Claude Garamond, Robert Granjon and Eric Gill. The main idea of the project was to create a sans-serif antiqua with all features reserved for serif typefaces. Lifeform is a modern display font created as a result of my experiments on the forms of letters. While working on the font, I had ambivalent feelings, on the one hand I liked the individual curved lines, on the other hand they seemed very strange, alien and illogical. It was like looking into a microscope and seeing something strange. I wanted to develop and study these forms as something new, because I had never seen anything similar before. The result is a contrasting font that has both curves and sharp, and smooth lines that resemble some kind of organic matter. The font is well suited for large headlines, posters and covers. Its strange design catches the eye and will not leave the viewer indifferent.

Cosmic Turtle is the belief that the world is supported by a giant turtle. It is mostly found in Hindu and Chinese mythology and the mythologies of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. I had to think of this, as the idea of the Cosmic Turtle is referenced to in the 1982 book ‘A Wild Sheep Chase’ by Haruki Murakami - my favourite author. Cosmic Turtle is a font that I made using a broken chop stick and Chinese ink. I was actually trying to create something scary for Halloween, but this is what came out and I quite like it. Cosmic Turtle is a fat display font with rough edges, wobbly glyphs and a set of double letter ligatures for you to play with.

Black Drum is a rare revival typewriter face, made digital from analog samples gathered with great care by Coniglio Type. A time and place; type and life.
