Although the 70ties were very liberating and progressive, still girls played mainly with dolls and sweet things and boys with all kinds of challenging stuff. They did all sorts of basic scientific experiments in mini labs and of course built cool things with Meccano building sets. As a girl I was perfectly happy with the toys I had access to. But at the same time I was very curious about all the adventure toys and discoveries my brother did. It also made me wonder why the grown up people thought that our world could be separated so easily by separating our toys in pink and blue sections. At this day of age Meccano is probably hopelessly old fashioned and far to manual. Children of today are fed by fast images and cool animations on screen, they learn, play, communicate and relax in the same space, the digital space. The special feature of Meccano was that even though it was very basic there was the promise you could create anything. It might even contribute to a logical mind. The typeface I designed refers to the Meccano feel. It is a creative typeface. A bit masculine and bold looking perhaps but after the first impression a subtle and refined female touch is revealed. It has links to architecture and associations with metal constructions like ‘The Eiffel Tower’ and (old railway) bridges. I am convinced that we all think of that as very charming man-made objects.

My brother is an architect, and I have always loved his lettering, you know, the style of writing that can be found on architectural drawings. There is a common thread to it, yet each architect or engineer brings their own personality to it. I have seen a similar style being used by some hand-letterers for invitations, place cards and signage. Inspired, I set out to create my own, and the result is my new typeface, Robard! I wanted something compact, somewhat modular, done quickly but with control, and sourced from hand-lettering. Starting out with a handful of pigment ink pens, I settled on a 0.1mm Copic Multi-Liner, and using a light table with a grid underneath the paper, I cranked out grouping after grouping, letter after letter, numbers, punctuation, accents, just trying to zero in on the feeling and the look I was after. There were some ideas that didn't work, like unicase (there would be no regular lowercase), or swash alternates. Ultimately, I ended up with a decent array of glyphs to choose from, and alternates like oldstyle numbers, and an alternate set of caps for the lowercase slots, and even alternative figures so doubles like 88 would be different. In the font, the OpenType ligature code automatically alternates the cap and lowercase (alternate cap) letters, and numbers as you type, lending Robard that hand-lettered look in a digital typeface that I was hoping for. There are also oldstyle figures, and unlimited fractions, ordinals, and a few alternate letters. I hope you like Robard!

Clumsy is a two weight all caps handcrafted awkward font with alternates for all characters and digits. The font was inspired by a few lines of text from an old soviet book about vine. Clumsy is a good choice for small amounts of text. When Clumsy is used in OpenType applications, its Contextual Alternates feature produce a striking random-like effect on glyphs distribution, achieved by cycling through alternates. When not using the Contextual Alternates feature, you can still pick the alternates in the Glyphs palette or use the alternates available from the keyboard upper and lower case.

Swan Song is a digitization of gorgeous free form calligraphy by British artist Rachel Yallop. It first appeared in The Calligraphy Source Book edited by Miriam Stribley (Running Press, 1986). Rooted in day to day handwriting, Swan Song is a quick and irregular artistic jolt at first impression, and surprisingly richly-textured art at second glance. Whatever these letters are used to communicate, the communicator is content, confident, humorous, strong and experienced, and the reader will be glad to receive the personal contact of such a communicator. Linotype Mhai Thaipe is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. The work of German designer Markus Remscheid, the name is not hard to recognize as an English-Asian play on my type and describes its general character. The small circles which ornament the alphabet and the unusual flowing forms which look like a mixture of Arabic and Sanskrit combine to give the typeface an ornamental, exotic look. Linotype Mhai Thaipe is best used for headlines with point sizes of 12 or larger.

This text font was designed by the Latvian artist Gustavs A. Grinbergs and is available in six weights, from light to black. The font has a light stroke contrast and its basic forms are the circle, rectangle and triangle, making it a constructed face. The impression of the font on the reader is elegant and cool, very like poster fonts of the 1930s. Linotype Rowena is suitable for headlines and shorter texts with point sizes 12 and larger.

Circulaire is a set of initial caps designed by Sjoerd Hendrik de Roos in 1926, and digitized in 2009 by Hans van Maanen. Unusual serifs, spurs and swashes make for interesting continuity points in the familiarly angled shapes, while adding a unique calligrapher's touch to the beheld forms. As far as initials go, this set contains the extra touch of personality needed to lead into a paragraph, which is preferable to the usual swashed italics that are widely used. This text font is available in six weights from light to black and was designed by Gustav A. Grinberg. An outstanding characteristic of the font is its light stroke contrast and its constructed forms. Its tiny, triangular serifs first become noticeable in very large typesizes, much like the Dutch fonts of the 17th century, Copperplate, for example. Linotype Brewery is cool and elegant and well-suited to middle-length texts and headlines.
