1970’s Techno-typography finds its rebirth in Berkmire AOE. From its beefy weight to its narrow and sometimes unusual counter cuts, Berkmire AOE started as a digitization of a film typeface called Belden by LetterGraphics. This bulky techno typeface was taken from its limited character set and fleshed out to include an expanded language glyph set. The Capital letterforms seem to push the edge of readability, while the lowercase falls more in line. The letterforms of Berkmire AOE are easy to convert to paths and extend various stems, making this revival something you can really let your imagination run wild with for your designs.

Josef Týfa first published the Academia typeface in 1967-68. It was the winning design from competition aimed at new typeface for scientific texts, announced by Grafotechna. It was cut and cast in metal in 1968 in 8 and 10 point sizes of plain, italic and semi-bold designs. In 2003 Josef Týfa with František Štorm began to work on its digital version. During 2004 Týfa approved certain differences from the original drawings in order to bring more original and timeless feeling to this successful typeface. Vertical stem outlines are no more straight, but softly slendered in the middle, italics were quietened, uppercase proportions brought closer to antique principle. Light and Black designs served (as usual) as starting points for interpolation of remainig weights. The new name Academica distinguishes the present digital transcription from the original idea. It comprises Týfa’s rational concept for scientific application with versatility to other genres of literature.

The 1940s-era hand-lettered title on vintage sheet music for the song hit "Donkey Serenade" had an interpretation of the classic typeface "Broadway" used in a Mexican/Southwest motif with wavy lines cutting through the letters. Adapting Playwright JNL (itself, a hand-lettered interpretation of "Broadway") to this style, the festive design is now a digital typeface called Southwest Serenade JNL.

Scenders was inked first then digitized for the masses to use. Strong ascenders and descenders embellish the font, so the lowercase characters are quite compelling. Scenders is versatile, but it works very well in all caps headlines.

Knip, in Dutch, means ‘cut’. You can tell by the glyphs that I made this font by cutting out the shapes from black paper, gluing it onto white paper and photographing the result so I could digitalise it! I don’t make too many cut out fonts, as it is a lot of work and it often leads to nothing. Besides that, I depend on the paper supply from my kids and they happened to have black paper this time!

Golden Ticket is a digitization of hand-drawn poster lettering by Otto Heim from 1925. The regular style is meant to be used on its own, but the other three styles are meant to be used one on top of another in three different colors to create a 3D effect. For best results, put the base style on the bottom, with the fill style directly on top of that in a different color, and the highlight style directly on top of that in a third color.

Dassitzt is a family of two typefaces, Dassitzt LT Typos and Dassitzt LT Pictos. The flower children of Canada Type are at it again. This time we went above and beyond the call of duty and right into the land of reconstruction in order to make this font. When we saw a few letters from an early 1970s film type called Jefferson Aeroplane, we had the sudden urge to bring their beauty to digital life. But since further research revealed no more letters or information, we just had to "wing" the rest of this Aeroplane. Now this Genie is out of the lava lamp, and it's nothing short of groovy. A few symbols and alternates come within the font, so make sure to check out the very full character set. We love this font so much that we couldn't help but play with it for a week. Stencil Patterns JNL collects into one digital file a number of decorative stencil patterns from decades past. These charming illustrations were re-drawn by Jeff Levine using images of vintage oilboard stencils made over fifty years ago. While these are useful as stand-alone embellishments for any print projects, they can also be scaled and printed out onto card or acetate stock for hand-cutting as new stencil templates. A special note of thanks goes to fellow type designer and author, Leslie Cabarga. He supplied the bulk of the images used in designing this font file. There are left and right pointing hands on the parenthesis keys, and a decorative ampersand on its respective key.

Curwen Sans is a monoline sans-serif dating from the early twentieth century. Though contemporary with Johnston’s Underground and Gill Sans, and emerging from the same artistic milieu, Curwen Sans was created solely for in-house use at the Curwen Press in London so never achieved a wide audience or recognition. The original face was cut only in a Medium weight, but the new digital family consists of four weights, each with an optically corrected Oblique, and all containing a full complement of Latin Extended-A characters. K-Type Curwen Sans comprises three packages: • Basic Family (Regular, Oblique, Bold, and Bold Oblique) • Light (Light and Light Oblique) • Medium (Medium and Medium Oblique)

Annonce is a digitization and expansion of a 1912 Johannes Wagner Foundry classic called Aurora Grotesk, which also circulated later on in metal under the name Annonce. Bold, extended and clear as a bell, Annonce stood out as the definite big sign font long before the Helveticas of the world. With angled cuts on some of the letters, it also shows humanistic traits that make it more appealing than any other face in its genre. The Annonce set comes in two fonts, a regular and an italic, and includes a very large character set that accommodates almost all Latin-based languages, including Turkish, Baltic, Celtic, Maltese, Esperanto, and the languages of Central and Eastern Europe.
