This family was inspired by the pure Jenson set of fonts used in Venice to print De preparatio evangelica in the year 1470. The present font contains all of the specific latin abbreviations and ligatures used in the original. Added are the accented characters and a few others not in use in this early period of printing, also small caps, these, contained in a separate file in the Mac TT version. This font supports strong enlargements as easily than small size remaining very smart, elegant and fine. Decorated letters like 1512 Initials, 1550 Arabesques, 1565 Venetian 1584 Rinceau or other fonts from GLC Foundry, can be used with this family without anachronism. If Italic style is required, we recommend the use of 1557 Italique.

Veteran designer Bo Berndal has created Cartesius, an oldstyle serif typeface with roots in the 16th and 17th centuries, France and Venice. Bo Berndal: "Rene Decartes, the great French philosopher, was invited to Sweden in the 17th century, when the country was at the height of its power. In the university city of Uppsala he used the Latin name form Cartesius. The typeface that carries his name is inspired by letterforms from the 1600s, but upper case letters are of pure Roman type". Honesty is sans serif font with flared stems. As such, it belongs to the incise genre which is historically inspired by the roman civilisation and letters carved in granite or marble. One of the major example of it is the Trajan’s Column in Rome which inspired a font called Trajan, designed by Carol Twombly in 1989. Honesty is also inspired by more brutal font such as the Albertus, designed in 1938 by Berthed Wolpe, and its shape is highly influence by the work of the hammer. Despite this brutality and urgency due to the carving technique, the design of Honesty bring softness to it thanks to its low contrast and smooth curves. Honesty’s design include 16 styles, from thin to black in roman and italic.

Dorsal is a display typeface that is based on a rare bit of lettering from a 1910 German lettering book.

The Redikut Letter Company of Hawthorne, California specialized in die-cut cardboard display letters used by sign makers to achieve a three-dimensional effect on show card and display work. A set of these letters purchased by Jeff Levine brought back memories of classic movie houses with their fancy display and lobby cards, and thus was created "Aisle Seats JNL".

Lust Didone’s character set was expanded as well during the redraw and update, the Italics were separated and reimagined anew from the universal italics in the original offering. Lust Didone also includes the new Fine optical size with complementing Italics for each size as well. And, yes, more swashes. The Lust Collection is the culmination of 5 years of exploration and development, and I am very excited to share it with everyone. When the original Lust was first conceived in 2010 and released a year and half later, I had planned for a Script and a Sans to accompany it. The Script was released about a year later, but I paused the Sans. The primary reason was the amount of feedback and requests I was receiving for alternate versions, expansions, and ‘hey, have you considered making?’ and so on. I listen to my customers and what they are needing… and besides, I was stalling with the Sans. Like Optima and other earlier high-contrast sans, they are difficult to deliver responsibly without suffering from ill-conceived excess or timidity. The new Lust Collection aggregates all of that past customer feedback and distills it into 6 separate families, each adhering to the original Lust precept of exercises in indulgence and each based in large part on the original 2010 exemplars produced for Lust. I just hate that it took so long to deliver, but better right, than rushed, I imagine.

It was the original work of fifteenth century designer Nicolas Jenson that formed the basis for this roman serif style developed by Ernst Detterer in 1923. Similar in spirit to other early twentieth century revivals such as Centaur, Cloister Old Style, and Italian Old Style, Nicolas Jenson is distinguished by its pristine and delicate nature. A gifted young apprentice to Detterer, Robert Hunter Middleton, greatly expanded the family. And by 1929, bold, italic, and open were part of the Ludlow Foundry’s beautiful Nicolas Jenson Series. It was reintroduced under a new name, Eusebius, in 1941. This digital version includes a new medium and extrabold weight with intermediate small caps and swash alternates throughout the family. There is also a regular expert version with a variety of currency symbols plus a regular petite caps (regular x-height small caps) and old style figures version. Nicolas Jenson is now available in the OpenType Std format. Small caps, old style figures, and swash alternates have all been combined into one style for ease of use. You will also find an additional regular petite caps version included with the regular style. Some new characters have been added as stylistic alternates and historical forms. These advanced features work in current versions of Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress. Check for OpenType advanced feature support in other applications as it gradually becomes available with upgrades.

The front page of a late-1940s sales catalog for the [now defunct] Duro Decal Company of Chicago had its company name hand-lettered in a tall, condensed chamfered sans serif type design. I hate the idea of revivals. I have publicly said I choose not to do revivals because they make me uncomfortable. This is as close as I have been to crossing my own line. To be direct, Rhythm is based on the ATF typeface, Ratio (I just recently learned the foundry of origin). I came across this typeface from a printed specimen years ago when I was in school and held onto it. It was unique and I loved how well integrated the inline worked within both the flourish and serif of the glyphs—it was old, but not, reminiscent, but fresh. My specimen was limited in the glyph offering (it was c. 1930ish) and I realized a lot would need to be done to ‘finish’ it and bring it to contemporary expectations. I didn't want to do ‘retro’ and tried to avoid the visual trappings associated with it. What I did want to do is interpret what I had in the specimen and reinterpret it digitally, refining its construction and extending its typographic equity along the way. The ‘One’ and ‘Two’ (and their matching ‘Solids’) styles diverge providing various elaborations that coordinate well between rigid bracketed serifs and compact tails. I further expanded the glyph offering to include a full diacritic set, old style numerals, fractions, stylistic alternates, swashes, titling alternates and controlled flourishes that adhere to the efficient framework of the script. And yes, I refer to it as a ‘script’ because calling it a ‘cutesy serif’ seems wrong :) I hope this is seen less as a slavish revival and more as a championing of a really unique typeface. The Original Typeface was Adastra, designed by Herbert Thannhaeuser for the Foundry D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt, Germany.

Valenteena is in the spirit of the 19th century, but there are no other typefaces quite like it. It is geometric, using distorted hearts to form the letters. The lower-case letters are smaller versions of the upper-case letters. The overlay variant is derived by breaking ValentinaContour into its parts: the inner letter, the white inner border, and the black outer border. To use them one must have a program that allows layers of letters. Type in and format the inside variant to get the message you want. Also select the color you want this layer to have. Copy this layer twice, formatting one to the medium and and the other to outside. Color each of them in the colors you want and them combine the three layers, placing them so the letters exactly align. You will get letters with three colors.

An interesting hand lettered example of Art Deco lettering (minus the letter ‘L’) was spotted on Pinterest and served as the inspiration for Deco Sketch JNL. Because there was no attribution as to the age or source of the alphabet, it can only be surmised that it was a scan from a 1930s or 1940s source. The original showed many of the irregularities of pen lettering, and had rounded terminals. The digital version has been redrawn more uniformly with flat terminals. Deco Sketch JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.
