The Redikut Letter Company of Hawthorne, California specialized in die-cut cardboard display letters used by sign makers to achieve a three-dimensional effect on show card and display work. A set of these letters purchased by Jeff Levine brought back memories of classic movie houses with their fancy display and lobby cards, and thus was created "Aisle Seats JNL".

This font started life in 1893 at the Boston Type Foundry, but was also cast at the Central Type Foundry. Both were members of the ATF combine formed in 1892. Like so many interesting fonts of its day, it was issued without a lowercase, limiting its use to display headlines. Sometime in the early 1990s, we designed a lowercase to go with it.

A modern calligraphy typeface with a playful yet elegant style, inspired by Mozart’s “Rondo Alla Turca” and his other compositions played with allegretto tempo. The font contains more than 1000 glyphs. Each letter in the typeface has few different swashes that can be accessed via glyphs panel of your opentype-aware application such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, MS Word.

Luscombe is a boisterous and lively display face, recalling the shaded and outlined faced much beloved of 1920s poster and advertising artists, while offering a regularity of outline that those faces often did not achieve. Itís ideal for poster and display work, or for signage with a subtle period feel. Mix the two faces to add emphasis where it's needed.

The design of Concert Series JNL is based on hand-lettering for a 1930s-era WPA (Works Progress Administration) poster for the Federal Music Project of New York City’s symphony concerts. Held every Sunday at the Theater of Music [located at 254 West 54th Street], the admission in those Depression-era days was 25 cents and 60 cents, with all seats reserved.

This font was made possible by creating a custom brush in Illustrator. I started with a flat brush dipped in India ink to create the stroke. From a scan of that stroke I made a vector tracing which I then I altered as necessary to get the desired dimensions. The lower case letters have a thinner stroke than the capitals.

Steve Jackaman & Ashley Muir. Packard Old Style is based on lettering drawn by Oswald Cooper for the Packard Motor Company (ATF 1913). The bold weight is credited to Morris Fuller Benton (ATF 1916), but it is highly probable that Benton did the adaptation for both weights. Cycles was designed for use in books and other publications with lengthy texts and/or complex typography using different sizes of type. One menorah that I have long found particularly appealing was named The Tree of Life Menorah, a replica of which I gave as a gift one holiday to a kindly old couple who were neighbors and became friends. It had a simple, organic elegance that I see in the best of Art Nouveau sculpture. To me personally, Judeism is a celebration of life, like the triumph of the flower that blossoms in the crack of the city sidewalk. Just as Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the temple and the miracle of the oil, it celebrates the victorious quest for freedom of the Hebrew people led by Judah Maccabee. Hanukkah represents determination and courage and faith — and it represents the presence of God in the lives of His people. It is interesting to note that the founding of the Albanian nation in the early twentieth century grew out of the resistance of the Albanian people to the imposition of Greek language and culture in the aftermath of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. The typeface, HADASSAH, designed by Henri Friedlander (1904-1996), is my favorite Hebrew typeface. Thirty years in the crafting, I believe it is unsurpassed for its shear beauty, combining a subtle modulation of stroke with a simplicity and clarity of form. No doubt, that is why it has become so popular. For me, the Sîyn/Shîyn characters are especially satisfying. For a Hanukkah message in Hebrew, I would choose HADASSAH LIGHT for a headline and print it as large as I could. If, however, you are looking for a friendly, warm face for a seasonal message in a roman-letter based language, may I suggest BETHLEHEM EPHRATH. It will be as comfortable as a bulky, hand-knit sweater on a frosty afternoon and reflects the solid, encompassing, family orientation of this holiday. Fantini is the revival and elaborate update of a typeface called Fantan, made in-house and released in 1970 by a minor Chicago film type supplier called Custom Headings International. In the most excellent tradition of seriously-planned American film faces back then, CHI released a full complement of swashes and alternates to the curly art nouveau letters. Fantan didn't fare much among the type scene's big players back then, but it did spread like electricity among the smaller ones, the mom-and-pop type shops. But by the late 1980s, when film type was giving up the ghost, most smaller players in the industry were gone, in some cases along with little original libraries that existed nowhere else and became instant rarities on their way to be forgotten and almost impossible to resurrect for future technologies. Fantini is the fun and curly art nouveau font bridging the softness and psychedelia of the 1960s with the flirtatious flare of the 1970s like no other face does. Elements of psychedelia and funk flare out and intermix crazily to create cool, swirly letters packed with a lot of joy and energy. This is the kind of American art nouveau font that made its comeback in the late 20th century and is now a standard visual in the branding drive of almost every consumer product, from coffee labels to book and music covers to your favorite sugar or thirst-crunching fix. Alongside Fantini's enormous main font come small caps and three extra fonts loaded with swashy alternates and variations on plenty of letters. All available in all popular font formats. Fantini Pro, the OpenType version, packs the whole she-bang in a single font of high versatility for those who have applications that support advanced type technologies. In order to make Fantini a reality, Canada Type received original 2" film specimen from Robert Donona, a Clevelander whose enthusiasm about American film type has never faltered, even decades after the technology itself became obsolete. Keep an eye out for that name. Robert, who was computer-reluctant for the longest time, has now come a long way toward mastering digital type design.

Calluna was born more or less by accident. When I needed a little break from designing Museo I was just fiddling around a bit to see if maybe a full slab serif would be something to have a look at. The first thing I did, of course, was to put slab serifs on the stems of Museo. When I did, something nice happened. Slab-serifs with a direction! I ended up using the idea for something I always wanted to do: making a rather serious text face. The goal was to make a text font, but one with enough interesting details. In the end it all came down to finding the balance in a typeface between the robustness needed to function as a text face and enough refinement to look good as a display font. A set of original ornamental symbols was designed by Viktor Kharyk and licensed to ParaType in 2007. The name was inspired by the famous book “Champ Fleury” by Geoffroy Tory (1529) but the theme of blooming meadow was embodied much more literally. Each ornamental motive has a real prototype in flora. Mainly there are plants raising on Ukrainian wooded steppe. Plants were chosen for their Ukrainian and Latin names begin of proper letters from Ukrainian and Latin alphabets. The font is consisted of two styles: Day for normal and Night for reversed that reminds night lighting by its unexpected distribution of black and white areas. Fleurons may be used for creation of ornamental surfaces, composed borders and corners, decoration of any materials, and even as botanical illustrations.
