There's something satisfying about tweaking to perfection a typeface based on the particular style of lettering applied to a particular kind of paper by a particular human hand. One day, in pursuit of this curious sense of satisfaction, I sat down with a porous pad of lined note paper and printed out the alphabet with a ballpoint pen. I found particularly interesting the bulbous ends of the strokes where the ink soaked in. I couldn't help myself: I drew out the rest of the character set, scanned, hand-traced, and -- as with all 3IP font designs -- manipulated every glyph to an obsessive degree. Named it Cedar Street, after a favorite address of mine. Full release has a single medium weight with a thorough character set.

A 1916 book entitled “Lettering” by Thomas Woods Stevens features a number of hand lettered alphabets; some plain, others unique. One of the more novel examples was designed by Harry Lawrence Gage and featured letters and numbers with a crude, wavy style described in the book as “adapted to wood block and linoleum cutting”. To keep the design as close to the original as possible, the image from the book page was auto-traced, with each character given just enough of a clean-up as to retain its own quirkiness while smoothing out any jagged lines and fixing some curves. From there, other necessary characters were created for the digital font, and the end result is Tenement JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Proto-Sinaitic (also referred to as Proto-Canaanite when found in Canaan, or Early Alphabetic) is found in a small corpus of c. 40 inscriptions and fragments, the vast majority from Serabit el-Khadim in the Sinai Peninsula, dating to the Middle Bronze Age. They are considered the earliest trace of alphabetic writing and the common ancestor of both the Ancient South Arabian script and the Phoenician alphabet, which led to many modern alphabets including the Greek alphabet. According to common theory, Canaanites or Hyksos who spoke a Canaanite language repurposed Egyptian hieroglyphs to construct a different script. The earliest Proto-Sinaitic inscriptions are mostly dated to between the mid-19th (early date) and the mid-16th (late date) century BC.

Cursivo Saxonio is a typeface inspired in the famous book The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, by H P Lovecraft. It shows better than I get with my studies the authentic "Insularis" or "Cursivo Saxonio" handlettering of the VIII and XI centuries used by some people in Britain. Since the release of Wood Bonnet Grotesque No.4 the font became popular for packaging and adverts. But the font styles were limited to one worn and one clean font in a medium weight only. Bonnet Grotesque Nr [Narrow] will fill this gap. It’s based on Wood Bonnet Grotesque No.4 but slightly modernized with sharp corners. Some letters need more space now – so tracking is not the same. The Medium family style shares the same weight as the wood font version.

Franz Fiebiger (1880 - 1932) was an Austrian painter and designer who was associated with the Vienna Secession. In 1908 he created a beautiful poster for the Kaiserjubiläums Möbel Ausstellung - a furniture exhibition during the Kaiser's Jubilee. Artscript was Sol Hess's "attempt to convert into rigid metal the graceful penmanship of the ancient scribe". This type of script is more common in digital from but when originally released in 1948, it required special handling to avoid breakage. Extensive alternates were added based on original Hess drawings and additional sources. Both versions are combined into the Opentype version along with an expanded Central European character set as well as ligatures, Swash/Alternates, fractions, superior/inferior numerals and ornaments.

Modena is a beautiful high fashion font duo that makes for gorgeous logos, posters, wedding invitations, blog posts, social media, and more! I love using them together with layer masks in Photoshop, so it looks like the script is running through the lines of the sans serif. The sans looks stunning with tracking set to 220, as well as where it falls normally at 0! Modena Script includes over 50 ligatures to make everything look totally hand-done, and alternates for each letter.

The idea started with the 1934 sheet music of “Mazurka Amabile”. Its hand drawn title had most of the letters rendered in a rectangular shape [‘square’ in the sign trade] that featured rounded corners and terminals made by the shape of the lettering pen nib. A few letters were rounder in design than others, so those were scrapped in favor of a more consistent character shape throughout the font. Pen Nib Square JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

In hardware stores across the country are display racks with letters and numbers silk-screened onto self-adhesive aluminum "parallelograms". These handy and durable items have graced countless mailboxes, office doors, hallway signs and automobiles for years. My fellow font designing buddy [Harold Lohner] suggested that I make a font based on this form of lettering as a counterpart to my Mailbox Letters JNL (also based on self-adhesive signage product)... and now his suggestion takes shape as a digital font... F .H. Ernst Schneidler, type designer and teacher, originally designed Schneidler Old Style in 1936 for the Bauer foundry. Stempel Schneidler is based on the typefaces of Venetian printers from the Renaissance period and possesses their grace, beauty, and classical proportions. The Stempel Schneidler, a completely reworked and tuned font family made by D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt, is a fine, legible text font that also works well in display. One of Schneidler's more unique features is its question marks.

Aeris™ typeface is a contemporary book face created by the American designer Tom Grace. It combines the proportions and rhythm of a sans serif font with the high contrasts and flexed strokes of script faces, while the open counters also ensure optimal legibility. Born in 1831, Hermann Berthold was the son of a calico-printer. On completion of his apprenticeship as a precision-instrument maker and after practical experience gained abroad in galvanography, Hermann Berthold founded his "Institute for Galvano Technology" in Berlin in 1858. Very quickly he discovered a method of producing circular lines from brass and not, as customary at that time, from lead or zinc. The soldering normally necessary could also be dispensed with. The lines were elastic and therefore highly durable. They produced outstandingly fine results. Most of German's letterpress printers and many printers abroad placed their orders with Berthold. His products became so popular that the print trade popularized the saying "As precise as Berthold brass". In 1878 Hermann Berthold was commissioned to put an end to the confusion of typographic systems of measurement. With the aid of Professor Foerster he succeeded in devising a basic unit of measurement (1m = 2,660 typographic points). This was the birth of the first generally binding system of typographic measurement. It is still used in the trade. Hermann Berthold served as the head of the Berthold type foundry until 1888.

Mynaruse Royale is an expansion of Mynaruse Titling. It features script capitals and widely tracked and smaller titling capitals. Mynaruse Royale has plenty of character and, with its powerful and sharp serifs it draws in the eye. Mynaruse Royale is useful in settings that call for titling with an extra touch of elegance, such as a storefront, wedding program or formal invitation. Mynaruse Royale contains a number of OpenType alternates, including alternate forms for the capitals that are large, drop cap like capitals instead of the calligraphic script capitals found in the default forms. Additionally, there are non-widely tracked lowercase forms that work well with the included alternate characters and ligatures. The lowercase forms are 80% smaller in height than the Mynaruse lowercase forms, so the families are not interchangeable, but they can be used together. The calligraphic script capitals could also be used separately as drop capitals. OpenType-capable applications such as the Adobe suite or Quark can take full advantage of automatically replacing ligatures and alternates. This family also includes the glyphs to support a wide range of latin based languages.

Years ago, by happenstance, designers Nancy Mazzei and Brian Kelly found an old decrepit typewriter in an abandoned lot with tall grass in Brooklyn. They kept it around their apartment for two years. Then one day they decided that it was time to move and they planned to throw the old typewriter away. But it was so beautiful they wanted to keep at least a part of it. So they decided on keeping the keys. They kept the keys in a brown bag until one fine day the keys were introduced to a camera. It was a match made in heaven that resulted in some beautiful quirky images of typewriter keys. These images were the inspiration for Backspacer. They were scanned, traced and turned into a working typeface by Zuzana Licko.

AltraTwo is a complete redraw of a family based on a tracing of a clip art font from an old printed book. The AltraTwo family adds italic, black, and black italic. I liked the gentle calligraphic look. Consider it a sans serif with style. This is a typical NuevoDeco OpenType pro font with caps, lowercase, small caps, lining, oldstyle, and small cap figures, numerators, denominators, fractions, swashes, and so on. There aren't many unusal ligatures for this one, though. It does have the Latin 2 character set or what Adobe calls CE, Central European characters. Altra has been my preferred header face for sevral years. it also works very well for body copy. I usually use it for my contrasting tip and quote paragraphs with Bergsland Pro as my normal body copy.
