Viktor Solt-Bittner drew logo sketches for an insurance company. Luckily for Schriftlabor, they rejected the design, and he turned the sketches into a font family. Years later, Plantago was expanded, developed and completed by Schriftlabor’s type directors Franziska Hubmann and Lisa Schultz. Plantago shows delicate leaf-like stroke endings and subtle curvings and offers condensed and wide variants. Typeset in 6 weights from Light to Black, 3 widths from Condensed to Extended, both upright and italic, totaling in no less than 36 styles.

This is an angular typeface inspired by axonometric construction diagrams (for flat-pack furniture), particularly the way their lines impart a sense of 3-D space. The horizontal, vertical, and diagonal constraints of stroke direction produce interesting results in characters such as the 'R', 'S', and 'V' and contribute the mechanical appearance of this typeface. There is a high degree of repetition amongst different characters (upper and lower case) for instance the ’M’ and ‘W’ are similar and so are the ’m’ and ‘w’.

My first font for 2009 was Aerle. It is a new dark sans serif font in my continuing objective of designing book fonts that I can really use. It made a little ripple in the industry, but more than that I found that I loved it with Aramus and Artimas — my latest book font family with the same proportions. In many ways, Aerle is a very different direction for me built on what I have learned on Aramus and other recent developments in my style. The concept came to me while using Bitstream's Mister Earl on a site online—though there is no direct reference. I wanted a more playful heavy sans with a much smaller x-height than I have been using lately, plus taller ascenders. As I was using Aerle, I constantly needed a light and bold version. The new direction I am taking is a result of a decision that my fonts, though I loved the character shapes, produced an even type color that is too dark or a little dense. Aerle was an attempt to get away from that look even though the letterspacing is quite tight. For Aerle Thin I pushed a little further in that direction and increased the letterspacing. The hand-drawn shapes vary a lot, many pushing the boundaries of the normal character. This gives a little looseness and helps the lightness in feel I am looking for. It will be interesting to see where this all goes. Most new type around the world is far too perfect for my taste. While the shapes are exquisite, the feel is not human but digital mechanical. I find myself wanting to draw fonts that feel human — as if a person crafted them. In most ways this is a normal font for me in that it has caps, lowercase, small caps with the appropriate figures for each case. These small caps were very small (x-height as is proper). So Aerle's small caps are a little oversize because they plugged up too bad at x-height size. The bold is halfway between. These size variations seem important and work well in the text. This font has all the OpenType features in the set for 2009. There are several ligatures for your fun and enjoyment: bb gg sh sp st ch ck ff fi fl ffi ffl ffy fj ft tt ty Wh Th and more. The tale of Okiku Of The Nine Plates is an old Japanese story full of lust, deceit, murder and revenge. It tells of Okiku, a beautiful servant whose master lusts after her. After she refuses his amorous advances, he accuses her of stealing a costly plate and has her thrown down a well, where she dies. She then turns into an Onryō (a vengeful spirit). Okiku font is a thin, all caps, scratched typeface. Upper and lower case differ and can be interchanged. Okiku comes with an afterlife of diacritics.

Backwash AOE is a typeface I drew up back in 2000 inspired by various graffiti artists. Coming across all of my sketches recently and seeing a trend lately in graffiti inspired styles, I finally came around to finishing it up digitally for release. I love the break the rules, wildchild aspect, of graffiti lettering. And while this typeface is nothing like the wilder inspirations that I spawned this typeface from, it has a more legible direction to it, retaining just the flavor of the originals. Ballpoint font family was designed by David Fox in 2021 for the FontJuice™ foundry. A rounded sans serif style, Ballpoint has a simplicity which does not reject traditional forms . When I was painting this font, I suddenly had the movie Cool Runnings (1993, directed by Jon Turteltaub) in my head. I had to name the font, so I came up with Smooth Brushings. Of course, this font has nothing to do with the movie. Smooth Brushings is an all caps brush font, which was made with a stiff brush and some China Ink. Upper and lower case glyphs can be mixed. It is a very legible and clear font, ideally suited for posters, product packaging and book covers.

PT Petroglyph™ was designed by Ekaterina Kulagina and licensed by ParaType in 2002. The type was created on the basis of petroglyphs (rock-carvings) that are known in 77 countries. They remained in a form of geometrical drawings in the caves of North Spain and France. Scientists claim that the radial spread-out of circles or center-pointed circles that are usually depicted show the development of solar symbolism at that period of time. We know for sure that such mysterious signs as drawings carved on rocks already existed 40 centuries ago.

Foundry Flek and Foundry Plek are created on the same dot matrix grid system. Each family includes: light, regular, medium and bold weights – with a selection of dot patterns that can extend the grid vertically and horizontally. The underlying matrix common to each weight allows experimentation with overlays, and mixing weights produces varying effects. Foundry Plek used conventionally works well for serious correspondence, with a 'typewriter font' effect. Foundry Flek has an integral dot matrix grid as a background. With these two fonts a whole new graphic language can be explored.

AM Siola is designed as a pure display font. The starting point for this type design was a customized logotype. Logotypes usually just need the design of some characters to form a harmonious, individual lettering. Obviously, it is much more difficult to create a complete font on the basis of just a few characters. The semi-serifs partly running in the opposite direction form the basic idea for this font. AM Siola can well be used for packaging design, logo design and individual headlines for anything from advertising to posters.

Franko Luin, Marco Polo's designer, on this typeface: Marco Polo is a 'massacrated' oldstyle typeface that can be used in the same way as, e.g., Caslon Antique. I designed it - if the word design is appropriate in this case - to give the users an alternative so that they are not always directed to the same choice. For the same reason I made Marco Polo rounder. The name comes from the famous Venetian globetrotter, who has nothing at all to do with the typeface, since printing and punchcutting were still an invention of the future.
