Coil feels comfortable like a well-worn pair of shoes. It could easily pass for an assertive industrial European sans serif of the early 1960s with its slight reverse contrast, monotonous proportions, and squared-off curves, if not for its less predictable side. What appears initially as ellipses upon closer inspection turns out to be irregular shapes, closer to an inverted egg than an oval. The s looks topsy-turvy with its higher curve that is larger than the lower. Some terminal strokes overhang the bowl (as in the a), others open flat (as in the Q, the f, the j, and the t). The resulting effect shakes up this seemingly “retro” face just to make it new. Our midcentury recollections are slightly distorted and reinterpreted by this ironic typeface making it fresh while deceptively cozy and familiar. Coil’s high x-height and even texture make it readable even in small sizes despite its tight apertures. Anziano follows the direction staked out with Delicato. When creating traditional typefaces, it is inevitable to be influenced by earlier designs. Anziano does show touches of another classic typeface – Weiss (by Emil Rudolf Weiss, 1926). Weiss is often misjudged and overlooked. Perhaps the most well known Swedish typeface – Berling (by Karl-Erik Forsberg, 1914–1995) is actually based largely on Weiss. MRF have appreciated the design of Weiss uprights for a long time. When Stefan Hattenbach bought the first Swedish edition of The Lord of the Rings (1959–61), in 2004, he was amazed by the excellent flow of the text presented on each page. Despite the very original character that Weiss has, it was a pleasure to read a book set in such a typeface. MRF realized that several major foundries had already done interpretations of Weiss, more or less true to the original. MRF didn’t want to add on to that list! Instead Stefan tried to find his own path. Anziano consists of three core styles, Regular, Italic and Bold; each with small caps, ornaments, stylistic ligatures, and extended Latin accents. Lining, tabular, oldstyle and smallcap numerals help round out Anziano’s typographic range and function.

Lionheart is the digitization and expansion of Saladin, a neo-gothic typeface designed by Friedrich Poppl, long after he established himself as one of the greatest German designers of all time with some of the most “ausgezeichnet” scripts and text faces to ever come out of Europe. This typeface, though lesser-known among Poppl’s other masterpieces, was one of the first in its genre to abandon blackletter influence and attempt letter variations based strictly on Roman alphabet shapes. Poppl’s idea spawned a whole generation of neo-gothics that can now be found on many a movie poster or book cover where the design must hint at secrets and dark sides. Lionheart succeeds with the idea of gradual curves leading to sharp concave or plano-concave terminals, to effectively build serious letter forms that speak of historical mystique and mystery. This font was was named after Richard I, King of England for a decade in the late 11th century. He reportedly exchanged many gifts of respect with Saladin, even though the two kings were on different sides of the Crusades. Lionheart comes in all popular font formats, with some alternates placed in accessible cells of the character set.

EXPRESO was inspired by the extinct art and craft of urban Lettering applied to buses and other kind of cars for public service of transportation. Since the mid of last century, main cities of Colombia - as Bogotá, Medellín and others - were growing in population and brought urban area expansion with it and serious traffic problems due to the lack of political will and urban planning. The problem of urban transport in Colombia's largest cities has not yet been resolved, despite adopting some examples of mass transit system in other cities in the region. Before these actions, public transport in cities such as Bogotá was quite varied, leaving space for popular culture that survived for a couple of decades, until the massive dieback of these old buses early this decade, either by practices associated with Lettering it was displaced by some technological, some expressions of art street and city that evolved or disappeared. You can find a full, multi-color list of every icon with its name and corresponding character on a dedicated website or in a pdf manual. It’s a multilayer font so every group consists of 4 fonts – Regular, Back, Front, and 3rd Color. The Regular style is for single color use only and the Back, Front, and 3rd Color styles are necessary if you want to achieve a multicolor effect. The "Newbeats" typeface came about after watching the film A Hard Day's Night starring the Beatles, hence the name "Newbeats". The font was on the poster of the film and based on these letters I designed a full alphabet, complete with ligatures. The font has been fully digitized and fine-tuned to make it possible to use in all software applications and graphics programs. Whomever sees the font for the first time would think this is a totally new font; it has a modern look despite the mid-60s feel that I have tried to preserve. PTx Flowers Font Family 2 fonts: regular and silhouette each font - 6 glyphs TTF format Bear in mind that each glyph of the font PTx Flowers Regular is close to the maximum limit of points possible in ttf, which means that despite being tested in several programs, illustrator, photoshop, among others including word, some bugs may occur, depending on the rendering capability of the program you are working on. I found however that most of the time, that by the way the bugs, when tested, were only verified in word, that changing the size of the letter/glyph or even the zoom of the document, the letter/glyph was rendered correctly. These fonts have a very limited number of glyphs because, due to the glyphs having too many points, it can take some time to render. The lightest weight of Presley Slab takes inspiration from a late nineteenth-century type specimen, but what began as a decorative and delicate contrasted serif stirred Alejandro Paul’s imagination to conjure voluptuous reverse contrasted letterforms. These became the heaviest weight of Presley Slab, which nods to the lacquered hairstyles from the birth of rock ’n roll with its idiosyncratic ball terminals. Its playful allure and swagger remains visible in the weights that stand between these two extremes but as the curls loosened, many things happened in the design process including the appearance of swashes and alternates. The birth of the monospaced types dates back to the past. There was a need for the creation of typesets for typewriters. The difficulty was to align the different glyphs in the same width. This led to particular problems with letters like “M” and “l”; the former seemed to be squeezed into the same width of all letters and the second one appeared way too streched. Despite – or perhaps because of – the impression of the typewriter is still popular with Graphic Designers. Nowadays there are even monospaced versions of primarily proportional types; for example the the Sans Mono designed by Lucas de Groot or the DIN Mono. Then again, why not the other way round?! In the first half of the Nineties, Erik Spiekermann developed a proportional type named ITC Officina based on the Letter Gothic. According to a survey on the 100 best fonts of all time conducted by FontShop, ITC Officina is in an eighth place, far ahead of its forerunner. This was the reason for me to create a wider design with a Serif and a Sans Serif based on the queen of all monospaced types – the Courier.

Wardruna Arabic is a method of writing Arabic with a Runic-like alphabet devised by Devin Lester. He imagined that if some vikings had settled in the Middle East, they might have started speaking Arabic and writing it with a version of the Runic alphabet. This particular alphabet is based on Tolkien's Cirth Runes. A band of vikings went to Baghdad after raiding in Europe. The markets in Constantinople were closed as the Turks had just sacked the city. These men had heard of the great market in Baghdad and went there to sell their wares, seeing that this land was warm and fertile they decided to stay. They ended up settling the land and taking Arab wives and having children, because of thier Northern European accent their Arabic evolved into a part-Arabic dialect of Iraqi arabic. This is why today you see a few Arabs with green eyes and dark blonde or red hair. The Arabic alphabet was too fluid for them and vikings disdained the use of paper as a persons writings could be burned, so the evolved their runes to fit Arabic.

Callisto is a classic serif stencil fonts that is a stencil font like no others. Elegant curves are paired with great legibility and wide range of available glyphs. Roughcast is a kind of outside plaster, composed of cement and pebbles. It’s not the best looking plaster and it is estimated that in the UK, a roughcast outer reduces the value of a house by 5%. I am in the middle of renovating our old farm, but I won’t cover it in roughcast! Roughcast font is actually quite an attractive brush font. I made it with a brush I found hiding underneath my stove (where it had been for a while). I cleaned it and used it to make a couple of fonts, including Roughcast. Roughcast is best used for packaging, book covers and posters.

Jessie's Letter is based on an old typed letter by Kerrie's great step grandmother. This letter was undated, but we think it must have been from the 1920s or so. Jessie wasn't much for punctuation, so there aren't any of those pesky question marks and exclamation points. But, she did make mistakes in her typing, so we've included cross outs and strange resulting characters to make up for the lack of everyday punctuation. Maybe Jessie wanted to visit Paris, or maybe she secretly made paintings in her back yard, or maybe she dreamed of painting her house bright pink. Well, maybe not, but it's fun to dream...

An image found online of a vintage storefront sign for the Kraus Photo Shop was the inspiration for Photo Developer JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. The sign featured a thick and thin Art Deco style lettering with an inline cutting through the thicker strokes. Before the advent of digital photography, and way before chain stores offered in-house processing, neighborhood photo labs were the only place for getting prints from your roll film (unless you wanted to send the film into Kodak for developing and printing). Customers of these stores could also purchase additional film, cameras and photographic accessories from the same location.

Hanseat is a profonts typeface family by Ralph M. Unger, heavily inspired by Germany’s official DIN 1451 Engschrift. Originally, the German DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung / German Committee for Industrial Standardization) typefaces were taken as the standard traffic fonts for street signs and house numbers. During the 1980s, the DIN fonts became digitally available for sign making systems, initially again primarily for traffic sign purposes. However, later on, the DIN fonts became also popular in the world of designers and art directors. Hanseat is a modern, contemporary interpretation of the DIN fonts, responding to the ever growing demand for such typeface designs reflecting the spirit of the industrial area.

One of my favorites. Rundgotisch is a easy to read for eyes that are accustomed to roman letterforms, yet keeps in touch with its blackletter roots. It was released around 1900 by Schelter & Giesecke of Leipzig, Germany. Can be used to set short text passages and pairs easily with many different decorative initials of the period. A very useful typeface. Don't leave home without it. According to Bringhurst, Schelter & Giesecke was formed in 1819 by Johann Gottfied Schelter and Christian Friedrich Giesecke. This old German printing house was sucked up by state-owned Typoart in 1946, after Marshall Zhukov and the Red Army had established Soviet dominion over East Germany.

During a ‘type walk’ at the 2007 AtypI conference in Brighton, typographer Phil Baines pointed out what he considered to be a particularly egregious example of over-decorative art nouveau lettering on a war memorial. This made me determined to use it as the basis for a font. Released in Opentype, it now features ligatures, swashes and alternates. It’s not certain if the curved top bars on the E and F are a feature of the original design or due to climbers using them as footholds, but I incorporated them anyway. It has recently been used for invitations and supporting print material for formal charity dinners at the House of Lords.

DBXL Nightfever was originally designed by Donald Beekman in 2001 for the disco-techno-house record label of the same name, an imprint of United Recordings. Geometric and gridded, with a solid sci-fi techno feel, Nightfever still contains a lot of soul. Three additional wider weights were added for more design flexibility, as well as italics for all widths. After the record label was terminated the Nightfever fonts were used for many other DBXL design projects. It was put online for free download first in 2008, this year (2019) the design got more refined with additional accurate kerning and spacing. All fresh and new, ready for a new space age!

In the city of Millbrae (just South of San Francisco in San Mateo County, California) stands an office building which formerly housed the Millbrae Theater. California has the distinction of preserving artifacts of its past, unlike many other portions of the US, and the perpendicular "Millbrae" sign with its neon tubes and Art Deco lettering is still attached to the renovated structure. Gene Gable (a friend of type designer Jeff Levine) took a photo of the sign and sent it along as simply an image of great lettering of the past to enjoy, but it triggered the inspiration to create the namesake font Millbrae JNL.

I digitized and revitalize Hostetler Fette Ultfraktur Ornamental from the classical type specimen book from Rudolf Hostetler. He was a Swiss type designer, author of “The Printer’s Terms” designed by Jan Tschichold, of “Technical Terms of the Printing Industry” (5th edition was printed in 1995), and of "Type: eine Auswahl guter Drucktypen; 80 Alphabete klassischer und moderner Schriften" (Teufen, Ausser-Rhoden: Niggli, 1958). He also wrote "Type: A Selection of Types" (1949, fgm books, R. Hostettler, E. Kopley, H. Strehler Publ., St. Gallen and London) in which he highlights type made by European houses such as Haas, Enschedé, Deberny and Nebiolo. Jost Hochuli wrote his biography.

Binner was designed by John F. Cumming in 1898 and is an alphabet with a strongly historic character. It takes the reader back to the early part of the 20th century, when typefaces of this kind could be found in advertisements on houses and posters. The robust figures display a marked stroke contrast. Particularly striking are the high middle strokes of the E and F as well as the wavy connecting stroke of the H. The curves of the R and P extend well into the lower third of the characters. With its robust figures, Binner is best used for headlines in middle and larger point sizes.

There's a little restaurant in an old house on a sidestreet in town (Rockland, Maine, USA) called Cafe Miranda. The staff is friendly, the setting intimate, and the appetizer a basket of hot bread fresh from a brick oven. Its ample menu features such entries as "Quasi-Cassoulet" and "Gentle Sole." It's among my favorite local places to dine out. But the menu got photocopied once too often, and Cindy's personable handlettering got faded and broken. So I took matters into my own hands. And here's what I delivered to the newly computerized folks at the little restaurant on Oak Street. You, too, can travel in rather heavy felt-tip style.

Alejandro Paul’s Brownstone Slab is based on his own popular, award-winning, Brownstone Sans typeface.  Like the original Sans, Brownstone Slab is a 21st-century design, influenced by the Victorian decorative motifs of the ironwork and carved decorations of New York City row houses. Brownstone Slab’s sturdy serifs make it slightly more masculine and solid than its predecessor. As with Brownstone Sans, Brownstone Slab includes character sets for Latin-based languages, including Western and Eastern European, Baltic, Turkish, Maltese, Celtic and Welsh. It includes over 1500 glyphs, including small capitals, swash characters, alternates, and ligatures, in both Light and Thin weights. Ornamental frames are provided in all weights.
