Steinweiss Script began its journey towards daylight when Michael Doret was asked by Taschen Publishing to do cover lettering for the huge commemorative edition they were putting together on the work of Alex Steinweiss—“The Inventor of the Modern Album Cover”. The lettering was to be created to appear similar to the famous “Steinweiss Scrawl” the calligraphy that Steinweiss had used on countless album covers. While designing this piece of lettering, Michael realized that there was great potential for a font that was designed in the spirit of that famous “scrawl”. Through his contacts at Taschen Publishing, he was fortunate enough to be able to contact the Steinweiss family, and get the official Steinweiss approval to proceed with his “Steinweiss Script” project. Michael decided that in addition to giving the font his name as an homage, that he would donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this font to the man himself: Alex Steinweiss. Additionally, within each weight there are three variations: Simple, Fancy, and Titling. These variations relate to the size/ratio of the caps to the lowercase, the complexity of those caps, and the size of the ascenders/descenders on the lowercase characters. These variations add usefulness to the font, making it accessible not just for headlines, but for longer passages of text as well. Normal and upright italic script fonts line a well-trodden path; left-leaning fonts (or "rightalics" as they're confusingly called), on the other hand, are a rarity. Here at Eclectotype Fonts we don't like to do things too conventionally, so here's Backstroke, a laid back script with a unique voice. With contextual alternates for start and end forms of certain characters, swash versions of L, Q and Z (surely the most used initial caps!), and a handful of stylistic sets, Backstroke is a restrained script. My brother is an architect, and I have always loved his lettering, you know, the style of writing that can be found on architectural drawings. There is a common thread to it, yet each architect or engineer brings their own personality to it. I have seen a similar style being used by some hand-letterers for invitations, place cards and signage. Inspired, I set out to create my own, and the result is my new typeface, Robard! I wanted something compact, somewhat modular, done quickly but with control, and sourced from hand-lettering. Starting out with a handful of pigment ink pens, I settled on a 0.1mm Copic Multi-Liner, and using a light table with a grid underneath the paper, I cranked out grouping after grouping, letter after letter, numbers, punctuation, accents, just trying to zero in on the feeling and the look I was after. There were some ideas that didn't work, like unicase (there would be no regular lowercase), or swash alternates. Ultimately, I ended up with a decent array of glyphs to choose from, and alternates like oldstyle numbers, and an alternate set of caps for the lowercase slots, and even alternative figures so doubles like 88 would be different. In the font, the OpenType ligature code automatically alternates the cap and lowercase (alternate cap) letters, and numbers as you type, lending Robard that hand-lettered look in a digital typeface that I was hoping for. There are also oldstyle figures, and unlimited fractions, ordinals, and a few alternate letters. I hope you like Robard!

Scratch SCF is a grunge font with a difference. It has an irregular, almost random outline that suggests an old-fashioned quill pen that is leaking and scratching its way across the page. There are also connotations of simplicity, of a writer that is unsophisticated, possibly learning to write for the first time. This is a font that avoids all the associations of slick, worldly-wise urbanity, of cynicism and of "the medium being more important than the message". Instead the simplicity of Scratch SCF conveys a sincerity and integrity of design that bespeaks simplicity and old-fashioned honesty. All these associations are conveyed with a contemporary look, without resorting to rehashing the past with yet another retro font. Scratch SCF has a full character set: all upper and lower case characters, all special and accented characters and all punctuation, numerical and mathematical characters. All have been carefully spaced and kerned. Scratch SCF Staggered is a little more "grungy" than the regular style because the individual letters do not rest on the same baseline and thus have more vitality.

In designing an advertising poster to show off the unconventional Safefont typeface, Steve drew what appeared as relatively traditional letterforms for the expository text. When these characters were as well received as the typeface which was the subject of the poster, Steve decided to expand them into a full-fledged graffiti style typeface of their own. While exploring where this new design might lead, Steve worked to elaborate the poster segment which had inspired it. He soon found himself staring at a drawing of a weapons-wielding Bonnie and Clyde. The desperate duo resonated with the graphic elements of the drawn letters; thus leading to the effortless fleshing out of the design, and to its name, Big Clyde.

As you can probably tell, PG Gothique is inspired by classics such as Trade Gothic, News Gothic, Franklin Gothic, Alternate Gothic, and Gothic Gothic. Well, maybe not the last one... The Ampersand Forest has its first book family! Budinger Oldstyle has the legibility of a Garalde (like those of Garamond, Manutius, et al.), with a whiff of Venetian revival (after the fashion of Schneidler & Goudy). The letters are arbitrary, with conventions like cupped serifs and leftward stress. It also has a higher x-height than might be expected, to give it an upright posture and openness in the counters. Avenue is an eleven font family with five synthesist serif faces, five humanist sans serif faces, and one old style face. It is designed as an extrememly versatile body copy set. There are many special dingbats for bullets, and so on. It has oldstyle numbers and the small caps versions have lining numbers and small caps numbers.

The 1884 specimen book of San Francisco Palmer and Rey Type Foundry featured this elegant design under the name Oxford. The decorative caps, combined with the centered small caps, have a timeless appeal. Both versions of the font include complete Latin 1252, Central European 1250 and Turkish 1524 character sets, with localization for Moldovan, Romanian and Turkish.

JY Pinnacle is a distinctive text family, with at least 3,100 kerning pairs (for text fonts) and collections of alternative characters for roman, italic and cap and small cap. Pinnacle has an awareness of tradition, but is individual and fresh. Its oblique axis for lowercase letters such as the o and e is meant to aid legibility.
