In 1458, Charles VII sent the Frenchman Nicolas Jenson to learn the craft of movable type in Mainz, the city where Gutenberg was working. Jenson was supposed to return to France with his newly learned skills, but instead he traveled to Italy, as did other itinerant printers of the time. From 1468 on, he was in Venice, where he flourished as a punchcutter, printer and publisher. He was probably the first non-German printer of movable type, and he produced about 150 editions. Though his punches have vanished, his books have not, and those produced from about 1470 until his death in 1480 have served as a source of inspiration for type designers over centuries. DonnaBodoni was inspired by David Farey. He once wrote, somebody should honor the widow of Giambattista Bodoni the brave Signora Paola Margherita Dall 'Aglio for her effort to have the Manuale tipografico di Giambattista Bodoni published after his death. Since I have redesigned a good deal of Bodoni’s work and added some of my own, I thought it was my duty to do at least this for Bodoni’s unknown widow. Here is my 3-cut script in her honor. Alejandro Lo Celso’s tribute to Bodoni takes the form of a humorous fat face for display use, in both solid and engraved forms. Four years after Bodoni’s death, Margherita, Giambattista’s widow, published the two volumes of the famous Manuale Tipografico, a significant catalogue even today. Margarita’s curves are extremely sensual, it should be set only at huge sizes. I had a really weird dream the other night, but when I woke up, I had forgotten it. I had the feeling it was about something important, but I cannot, for the life of me, recall what I dreamt about! Forgotten Dream is a horror brush font, which I made with a brushy brush and Chinese ink. It looks like something right out of a nightmare, but you can also use it for something important. Like a ‘keep your distance’ poster, or a sign about the importance of washing ones hands. But then again, if you play in a death metal band, then Forgotten Dream font could be exactly what you need for your album cover!

Coleface was created by the British typographer Roy Cole, completed shortly before his death in 2012. It comprises six fonts: Coleface 30, 60, 90 and the italics 33, 66, 99. As with his earlier typeface families - Lina, Zeta and Colophon - Coleface is a highly-readable sans serif typeface that offers significant flexibility in terms of its potential uses. Roy Cole studied typographic design under the tutelage of Emil Ruder at the Gewerbeschule in Basel, at a time when typographic history was being made through the creation of a style that epitomized modernity. Consequently the principles of order, simplicity and legibility, fused with experimentation, became a hallmark of his practice, as exemplified in his last font Coleface.

The Face2Face (F2F) series was inspired by the techno sound of the mid-1990s, personal computers and new font creation software. For years, Thomas Nagel and his friends formed a unique type design collective, which churned out a substantial amount of fresh, new fonts, none of which complied with the traditional rules of typography. Many of these typefaces were used to create layouts for the leading German techno magazine of the 1990s, Frontpage. Nagel and his fellows would even set in type at 6 points, in order to make it nearly unreadable. It was a pleasure for the kids to read and decrypt these messages! Hieronymus Andreae or latter in life Hieronymus Formenschneider as he proudly took a new surname to proclaim his success in the printing industry as the man who introduced the Fraktur script to the world of print. This project was undertaken at the orders of Emperor Maximilian I. One of Fraktur’s first appearances was in a joint venture with the great Albrecht Dürer. This font was based on a later work, Andreae’s magnus opus in the music field, the Coralis Constantini by Henry Isaac. Andreae worked as woodblock cutter and then became a publisher in the city of Nuremberg until his death in 1565. We at PLTF are proud to revive this enormously influential typeface.
