Matura font was designed by the Hungarian wood engraver and type designer Imre Reiner in 1938 and released by the Monotype Corporation. During the investigation of the infamous murders in Whitechapel, police received several letters allegedly from Jack the Ripper. Of the hundreds received, the so-called, “Dear Boss” letter actually included some details of a crime that had yet to be committed. Soon after, the information in this letter would be corroborated at a crime scene. This font was inspired by the handwriting in that letter. When reading text, the most informative parts of the written word for a human brain to identify, are the top and bottom edges of each word, and to a lesser degree, the leading and trailing edges. The overall shape has more useful info than the inner workings of each word. DT Enigmystic, is a display font family that gives you just that. The outer edge. At first glance, these letters don't look like standard letters, and yet, they are perfectly readable. And it is a 'somewhat' smart text, in that it will automatically complete the trailing edge of every word, whenever it sees a comma, period or space. Similarly, it will automatically complete the leading edge of every word following a space. When used as display test or as a heading, the first letter will need to be preceeded by a space, to achieve a full enclosed word outline. As with most of my fonts, do use Contextual Ligatures. This allows the letters to come alive. When generated here on this webpage, contextual ligatures are not turned on, and so the words do not appear completely closed at their beginnings and ends. But as can be seen in the poster images, these outlined words do automatically complete themselves when contextual ligatures are active.

Around the turn of the 20th Century, the Inland Type Foundry produced a display face named Studley. It was a variation on a design by another foundry called Florentine. A book in the library of University of Wisconsin caught David Berlow’s attention. It was set in a clear text face - a predecessor of Bookman, cast by the Western Type Foundry who called it Custer. Upon noting how well the typeface worked in 6 and 7 points, he developed it into a member of the Reading Edge series specifically designed for small text on screen. Custer RE was a broad and approachable typeface drawn large on the body with a tall x-height to maximize its size when set very small.

The Wood-Regan Instruments Company (Wrico) of New Jersey manufactured for decades a line of lettering kits called the Wrico Sign Maker. With only special ink pens, plastic templates and a template guide anyone could letter clean, clear signs, posters and notices. Based on the same principles of architectural templates, the lettering was [for the most part] utilitarian and functional. Few templates were of stylized or decorative lettering. Informational Gothic JNL and its oblique version are based on the four inch high lettering templates from one of those kits.

Tucked inside the November 5, 1927 issue of a German signpainters' trade paper was a single sheet headed Der Schilder und Schriftenmaler, which featured an alphabet called "Neue Fraktur". An exuberant (if somewhat unconventional) combination of Art Deco sensibilities and blackletter forms, the font retains its freshness, even today. Included in this version are Deco bishops fingers at the bar and broken bar positions, and a styling, horn-blowing herald at ASCII circumflex and tilde positions. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin and 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan) character sets.

I do groceries a couple of times a week. When I am shopping for food, I always read the ingredients list; I don’t want too much sugar, nor palm oil, trans fats or a lot of E numbers. It used to be quite hard finding products that didn’t contain artificial flavours or colouring, but it is getting better. Artificial Flavour is an anti-ode to the time we couldn’t get enough of the stuff - it is a handmade, all caps font which comes with extensive language support and a sweet set of alternates.

NO! I don’t have a bearskin rug, nor a fur collar on my jacket. I believe fur should only be worn by its first owner. I have no idea why I called this font Bearskin: maybe I was influenced by one of the Viking novels I am reading - they’re full of Berserkers - but that name was already taken. Anyhoo, Bearskin font is a nice handmade all caps font. A little rough here and there, but with a lot of character as well. Bearskin comes with swashes, so you can have a ball!

I had a Neneh Cherry song in my head when I made this font. In ‘Buffalo Stance’ she sings about a gigolo with his hands in his pockets and his crocodile feet. My goal for Harfang was to create a serif typeface that would be easy to read at text sizes, while having a strong personality at larger sizes. The initial design had a purely rounded style, but with each development pass I introduced some angularity. The final result is a typeface that is easy to read in long texts, advertising copy, annual reports and the like; but one that also provides a crisp and stylish appeal in more prominent display settings. I choose the name Harfang (Harfang des neiges — Snowy Owl or Great White Owl) because after my first typeface, Migration, I wanted something with a thematic relation. On a more personal level, Harfang is the official bird of Québec, a province with a long winter and a wonderful, white landscape, and the place I call home. —André Simard

Paradise Lost is a 1667 poem by John Milton which mostly concerns the Biblical story of the Fall of Man, Eve's temptation by the devil and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden. It's quite a hefty read, as the poem consists of ten books with over 10.000 lines of verse. Needless to say, I didn't read it all. But, it did give me inspiration for a font, which I called Paradise Lost. It's a good name, even though there is nothing Biblical about this font. Paradise Lost was created (pun intended) using a broken bamboo satay skewer and Chinese ink. It is all caps, but upper and lower case differ and like to mingle. I also included several ligatures for double lower case letters (aa, ee, jj, kk, etc.). Paradise Lost comes with an eternity of diacritics.
