Looking back on my production to date, neither so little nor so large, it does not come as a surprise to find myself now introducing Lady René. A brief review of my career would read as follows: graphic designer graduated from Buenos Aires University, a 10-year professorship in Typography in the same institution, an illustrator in the making. For almost 15 years now my work has focused on the design of editorial pieces, predominantly books and CD sleeves. Typography proper has always been central to my research projects. All my obsessions eventually embodied as much the search for a perfect, spotless text as for a daring and provoking one. In my view, "how-to-say-something" ranks highest amongst a graphic designer’s responsibilities. It was in this vein that I called in the written word to illustrate, to draw, to narrate. Why not reverse the saying and proclaim that “a word is worth a thousand images”? If so, one single word could trigger endless meanings, associations, ideas, and memories in every reader’s mind. Language, we know, has a strong power and is a living expression of a culture. In my illustrations, letters and drawings reunite in one synergy said and unsaid, the finiteness of the message and the freedom of the free reading. And this is how and when, Lady René, my first born type font sees the light of day conceived out of a love of illustration and a reverence for the written word, recalling the whimsicality of the handmade drawing and reflecting its sensitive, warmth and spontaneity. Enabled by the characteristics of Open Type and the hard, outstanding work of designer Ale Paul, Lady René succeeds in composing texts in a simple, organic way by means of its contextual and stylistic alternates, swash characters, ligatures and connecting words. A bundle of decorative miscellanea completes the set of signs, enabling the user considerable freedom to create new typographic landscapes. Juan Bruce’s Noort is not a type family for wayfinding or mapmaking alone, but for clarifying information and engaging readers along their own journey. The information designer’s role is to bring clarity and style to overwhelming amounts of information, which fortunately is Noort’s purpose as well. Hierarchies submit to its will and layering colour only adds more presence to its active posture. Noort’s design uses the proven editorial text features of a large x-height, ample spacing, and low contrast to check all the boxes for paragraph text use. But it’s the long serifs, wide characters, and overall typographic presence that make it resilient and ease the task of reading in small point sizes. These details mean Noort is able to demonstrate importance not only with its five pitch-perfect weights, but with its brindled colour within a layout. Noort’s roman and italic styles play off each other by transplanting their design features. The roman style’s serifs are transferred in substance but expectedly increased in speed in the italic styles. And the italic’s inktraps and separated strokes are echoed amidst the roman’s upright structure. Where digitisation could have removed the influence of the hand, Noort retains the analogue nature of its creation. This antiphonal seeding of details creates a cohesive family that is as fascinating as it is functional. Noort’s axis and serifs have a slightly varying ductus — the directional flow that aids reading and character clarity. Its latent obviousness in text sizes immediately becomes its signature style when bumped up to subhead sizes. And since Noort’s counters are so wide and welcoming, its heavier weights can expand more within themselves than along their exterior edges. Francesco Canovaro created Bakemono as a way to explore the design space around the duality of fixed/proportional width. He was also interested in the concept of monowidth design, inherent in monospaced typefaces, that can bring flexibility and ease of use also to proportional type - allowing you to change the weight of a word without losing the text alignment. In his research on fixed width type design he mixed the lessons of mechanical typewriter technology with the intuitions of eastern brush calligraphy, which has been dealing with for centuries with fixed space grids. The name of the typeface comes from the Japanese shape-shifter yokais that could change their form freely between human and animal, and aptly describes the metamorphic nature of this wide superfamily coming in proportional, monospace and intermediate subfamilies. TT Ricks is a flamboyant elzevir-type serif, for which the words “cute” or “calm” are not a fitting definition. The typeface is inspired by the pre-digital font “De Vinne”, which was designed in 1892 by the designer Gustav F. Schroeder. We liked certain aspects of the historical prototype, but at the same time, when creating TT Ricks, we did not want to limit ourselves—on the contrary, we were eager to discover a completely new spirit and bring bright details to the font. The TT Ricks typeface stands out for its strong contrast, noticeable sharp serifs, narrow letterforms with a pronounced displacement of flows in the arches. The typeface has very dense spacing, and in the bold style, the text set begins to resemble Gothic by its richness and tension. Important visual features of TT Ricks are the dashing shapes of ascenders and descenders, the thin and sharp stroke endings, and the “elzevier legs” of the letters R K k. In the lowercase round characters c e s, you can notice the pronounced slope of the oval, which contrasts with the general set of the font. These "slanted" signs and ascenders and descenders of the letters f and y are designed to cut the monotony of a set and to entertain the reader's eyes. The TT Ricks typeface consists of three weights (Regular, Medium, Bold) and one variable font. Each style consists of 553 glyphs and contains 18 OpenType features. The most interesting features are stylistic alternates for the letters R K k with alternative short leg shapes, two sets of figures for working with upper and lower case characters, and a set of original icons that further reveal the spirit of the family. Rameau for classic elegance The type family Rameau™ was designed by Sarah Lazarevic She started with the italics; these she derived from the manuscript of the opera Les fêtes de l´hymen et de l´amour", the music for which was composed by Jean-Philippe Rameau in 1747. In the 18th century, musical compositions were published in the form of impressions from copper plates that had been hand-engraved in contrast with books and other texts, which were printed from moveable lead type. The italic letters of Rameau include many ligatures and are thus typical of the engraving style of the period. Rameau exhibits much of the harmonious rhythm associated with genuine manuscript. The marked Antiqua contrasts make the pages on which the font is used quite literally sparkle. This effect is enhanced by the excessively sharp terminals and the prominent serifs of the upper case letters. This highly legible and stylish type family can be used for printing high quality books, invitations, menus and all kinds of texts - anywhere the grace and elegance of France in the 18th century is to be invoked."

Upon numerous demands of highly esteemed users of our fonts I decided to supplement the Walbaum type family by display and poster cuts. Because I obviously cannot compete with world’s renowned type foundries which already offer a number of renderings of forenamed typeface, I thought proper to decline a bit from the original Walbaum’s design, strictly speaking, from the apprehension we commonly keep about this typeface. Therefore I didn’t set forth the way of modernizing (shame!), but rather the opposite direction: towards an analysis of the original neo-classical intention. I took the 10-point character, magnified it enormously and cut off progressively all the optically thickened bobbles which raised by small-size correction. I ended up at the size of about 120 points, where it became obvious that any further thinning would lead to an undesired manneristic fragility. Resulting 8-member family Walbaum 120 is naturally usable in variety of sizes, as well as cuts marked “10” you can use, say, from 6 to 30 points. I only hope that mister Justus Erich won’t pull me by the ear when we’ll meet on the other side...

A debut from the most anticipated vintage digital typefoundry by Gilang Purnama and Ilham Herry, who stucked their mind, body and soul back into the first era of 18th century. Senkron is composed of "normal" and a "blok" styles. Senkron ("normal") was designed as a pure and modern neo grotesk font. The anatomy of the letters are designed to achieve an equal text color. For this purpose, the legs of the letters “R” and "K" are designed with a vertical angle to prevent the white space that would occur in the middle of these letters. In the minuscule, the characteristic features of letters such as ‘a’, ‘l’, ‘t’ are concretized and legibility is supported in the text. Considerable attention has been paid to the harmony between the anatomical structures of the letters and the diacritical mark’s structure. Senkron Blok is arranged for situations which have diacritical marks overflow to leadings of the headline and headline typographical color is affected negatively from this situation. For this purpose, majuscule diacritical letters are resolved within the letter height. However, when this is done, new forms are obtained by integrated diacritical marks with letters instead of directly merging them. Thermal is an exploration of balance and contrast. Combining the elegance of classical typography with the sharpness of contemporary design. It was conceived to be a variable font with two axes: weight & optical size, providing a wide range of options for texts & display applications. The regular and italic text weights breathe a warm atmosphere, their design inspiration is a relaxed interpretation of the work of 16th-century French type designer Robert Granjon, evoking a comforting rhythm and a sense of familiarity that makes reading enjoyable. On the other end of Thermal's design spectrum lie the extreme weights – thin and heavy –, specifically designed for larger sizes. These weights borrow stylistic cues from several distinct influences: the characteristic woodtype from the 19th century, the sharp lettering styles from the 70s, and the bold work of Oscar Ogg. One of Thermal's disctint features is its italic's 20° inclination, an significant inclination by all standards, this design choice finds its roots in the "Ascendonica Cursive" of 1571, but is a contemporary interpretation that generates a captivating contrast with the regular version.
