Hawking is a slab typeface with slightly squarish shapes and a rational, modern look. The font has a minimal modulation, generous counterforms and relatively large x-height with lowercase ascenders extending above the cap-height for more legibility. Quase is a very free interpretation of the types found in the “Specimen of Printing Types” by William Caslon from 1785. We didn’t want to follow any of the models introduced in the Specimens, but rather gather a series of typographic aspects that we found useful and interesting from the several sizes and styles available and then give them consistency and new proportions so they could fit our very own purpose. We wanted to start with Caslon and then transform it into an editorial typeface, hence the increase of the x-height and the radical reduction of the ascenders and descenders. Despite the Display, Headline and Text fonts we also wanted to make a single weight Poster version with, inspired by the mechanical script introduced in the Double-Pica Script, to be used in magazines or as a complementary display typeface.

Plan is a corporate typeface made for 'Plan A Ontwerp', a graphic design studio based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Based on the rough sketches of the founder of Plan A Ontwerp, Frank Vogt, Characters constructed, mastered and finetuned the complete Plan Family. Plan comes in three versions; Plan A, Plan B and Plan C. All versions can be mixed because they share the same metrics, spacing and kerning. Where Plan A is a strong display type, Plan B has more details and is therefore better suited for longer and smaller texts. Plan C is a decorative stencil version with an own personality and dynamic.

Linotype Sinah is part of the Take Type Library, selected from the contestants of Linotype’s International Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. Designed by the German artist Peter Huschka, Linotype Sinah is a rounded, ornamental font with many strokes ending in teardrop forms. The letters of this wide-running font do not share a common base line. The capital S and the lower case l both drop under it although neither have descenders. Overall, Linotype Sinah has an almost Asian or Indian feel. The font must be used with generous line spacing and is intended exclusively for headlines or shorter texts in point sizes of 12 or larger.

Akira Kobayashi modified his Eurostile Next design into a fun unicase version. Ascenders and descenders have been traded in for alternates of letters that all share the same height. The effect is similar to using all caps, although this is quite a bit more quirky. For example, letters like the lowercase a and e are now the same height as their capital versions and the lowercase y has been raised to fit between the baseline and top height. Odd relationships such as these give Eurostile Unicase a fresh and funky feeling. Try using it for headlines and titles, then use Eurostile Next for the body text!

English Grotesque is based on the proportions of an early 20th century signwriter’s sans, emphasising the characteristic idiosyncrasies of type of the period. Sharing a similar Roman circle-and-square construction as Gill Sans or Johnston Railway, it has a wide T and W, a narrow S, and a long-tailed R. The Roman alphabet did not include a lower-case, and therefore early sans-serifs tended to base theirs on handwritten or cursive models, resulting in more even character widths. English Grotesque, by contrast, carries the more characterful proportions of the capitals through to the lower case. Available in six weights, with optional alternative versions for the Q, &, £ and J.

Camelot was the first of over 100 typefaces designed by Frederic Goudy. The upper case characters were drawn in 1896 for the Dickinson Type Foundry. Goudy was so encouraged by his check for $10 (double what he asked for the drawings), that he spent the next 50 years designing type. The lower case was added by the Dickinson foundry. This Lanston digital release includes a Text version based on the smaller point sizes of the metal type and a Display version based on the larger sizes. The two appear different in size but share the exact same line weight when at the same point size.

TOPPLER is a top-heavy comic font, K-Type’s salute to nineties freebies such as Ben Balvanz’s Baby Kruffy, Comix Heavy from WSI, and Dave Bastian’s Startling. Unlike those glorious fonts-of-old, Toppler contains a complete repertoire of symbols, dingbats and Latin Extended-A accented characters, as well as a proper lowercase, careful spacing and tasty kerning. Toppler also boasts cleaner outlines and more refined shapes. The Toppler family comprises four fonts that share spacing and kerning, so can be overlapped to produce bicolor and multicolor effects. In addition to the regular, solid style of Toppler, there is a shaded ‘Popdots’ style, plus thick and thin outline fonts.

Although the early 1900s through the 1920s seemed to be the "Golden Age" of ridiculously long novelty song titles, it appears that even the decade of the 1940s had its fair share as well. Song Merchant JNL was modeled from the hand lettered [but exhausting] title of the sheet music for "Princess Poo-Poo-Ly Has Plenty Pa-Pa-Ya (and she Loves to Give it Away)". Despite the obvious double-entendre inferences of the title, the square block letters with rounded corners make for a useful headline font (even if the source material it was drawn from is quite forgettable). Available in regular and oblique versions.

Winnie the Hoop is a bold, friendly and round display family inspired by a certain well known teddy bear. The family consists of three styles; Roman, Italic and Script, which are designed to be combined together. You can use any of the three styles as your main style and use the others to create multilayered typography that all share the same aesthetic. The typeface is well suited for branding and packaging design, advertisements, posters and even editorial design as a headline style. The Script is packed with ligatures and has Swash alternates that make it easy to customise your design. All styles include two sets of numerals.

La Parisienne is a collection of fonts inspired by Paris avenues and boulevards full of inimitable french charm. The family is a mix of handlettering and classic forms. All fonts in collection work well together and while they share some of the features each of the fonts has its own character. The main fonts in the collection are full of open type features such as stylistic and contextual alternates and swashes. Fully unicode mapped, the font collection has an extended character set to support Western, Central and Eastern European languages. It is best used in OpenType-aware software. Macha shares the same DNA as its sibling Anago, but is a completely different species than the former or any of my other sans serifs (Aaux Next, Air, Akagi Pro or Wasabi). It's no-nonsense construction bears many influences from Gill Sans and Frutiger while stubbornly blending my own humanist touch. The focus on developing Macha was just to get to the point with each letterform and discard the rest. Macha takes a little but gives a lot. A fully-loaded character set includes: Small Caps, Proportional Lining and Oldstyle Numerals, Tabular Lining and Oldstyle Numerals, Fractions, Ordinals, Inferiors, Superiors, Stylistic Alternates, Ligatures, Case-sensitive, and more.

The other day, I was cooking a curry and I suddenly realised that we, as a family, eat a lot of meat. At home we do like meat, but given the state our world is in right now, we cannot continue eating meat like there is no tomorrow. Tournedos is a beefy font family: a chunky all caps set of fonts - and a leaner set to counter and complement this rather heavy dish. And do eat your greens!

This square serif typeface is a real workhorse. It is a modern tool for text design: extremely legible and well shaped. Bandera Cyrillic has six weights with original italics. It catches attention in headlines of posters and magazines or makes reading comfortable in plain texts. Bandera Cyrillic shares main proportions with sans serif Osnova Pro typefamily so ideally can pair it. It has Bandera Cyrillic Text and Bandera Cyrillic Display sister families as well. Lumios Typewriter is a slab serif font that was inspired by, as you may guess, an old typewriter letters. The family has 4 unique styles: New, Used, Old and texturized Tape. All fonts benefit from OpenType features such as stylistic alternates that enhance a natural look of this font family. As well as Latin-based language support, it also offers a basic Cyrillic one. Touch Me is a Script hand-drawn style typeface—designed by Coto Mendoza—resulting from polyrhythmic exploration, sign deconstruction and altered calligraphic contrast plays with watercolour brush. Coto has been using these experimental calligraphy techniques when creating the catchwords for Macarons, the Boho Family, Bikini Season Script and Matcha Script and so forth. Touch Me was inspired by a character in a story written by Coto while attending a literary workshop with Ina Groovie in Santiago de Chile. The character is a tribal girl who lives on an island in the Caribbean. She is heir of ancestral knowledge and possesses wild beauty, very passionate and sensual: intense, strong and free. These features are reflected in the polyrhythm of the typeface's curves: an irregular baseline, variable x-height, different lengths of initial and terminal strokes (that sometimes expand and sometimes shrink) and amount of brush pressure that generates changes in contrast within the characters. This way, when composing, signs with stroke contrast randomly alternate with monolinear ones and with signs of altered contrast, thanks to the typeface's OpenType programming. The family, with more than 3,000 glyphs, provides a number of alternative characters, swashes, ligatures, initial and terminal forms, in short, a vast ocean of choices! Alias Vertical is a sans serif typeface with a vertical cut-off point for letter endings. The vertical cut-offs bend round characters (b, c, o, etc) into a squarish, high-shouldered shape, suggesting Roger Excoffon’s Antique Olive. In mid-weights, the typeface mixes Antique Olive with typefaces such as Gill or Johnston, for example the shape of the t, the l borrowing Johnston’s flick. Vertical has the same minimal difference in weight between verticals and horizontals as Gill and Johnston, and the same sharp connection point where curves meet straight lines. Like Antique Olive, Vertical has a narrow connection point here, adding contrast and definition. The overall effect feels austere at lighter weights and strident and graphic at bolder weights, and sharp and incised throughout. In the Bold and Black weights, the squarish and top heavy shape of Antique Olive is most noticeable. For example the wide uppercase, with the B having almost-even width between top and bottom curves, and the almost-overhang of the top curve of the G. But Vertical does not have as extreme an aesthetic or square shape as Antique Olive. As well as its wide design, the upper case is given extra authority by being a slightly heavier weight than the lower case. This is a device borrowed from Gill, and other ‘old’ typefaces, where the upper case is presented as a titling design. Modern sensibilities are more focussed on an even colour between upper and lower case. Vertical was originally intended as a sister typeface to Ano, like AnoAngular or AnoStencil. Vertical developed into a similar but separate design. Ano was designed for use in Another Man — in its modular, circle-base design, and the way there aren’t the amendments usually made in bolder weights to ensure letter clarity. This is for layouts where different weights are used together in different sizes so that the overall letter weight is the same, a feature of the magazine. Where Ano is simple and graphic, Vertical has nuance and texture. It is a pragmatic, utility design. In the balance between graphic and typographic, its focus is the latter.
