Zeta was developed by Roy Cole, the British typographer and book designer. It is his second typeface family, completed in 2006, and comprises six fonts. As with his other typeface families - Lina, Colophon and Coleface - Zeta is a sans-serif typeface, particularly notable for its fluidity and strong legibility. Whilst the proportions of Zeta are derived from classical models, the letter forms themselves are totally modern in concept. For example, when used for blocks of text little line spacing is needed to achieve good readability. Zeta is conceived as an easy reading typeface presenting an up-to-date impression wherever it is utilized. Due to its origins it really comes into its own when used for book design.

When it comes to poster design, the line between wild west and psychedelic can be surprisingly fine. Dave West combined both typographic genres to create his refreshing Banjo. A 1930s WPA (Works Projects Administration) poster advertising a play entitled “Abraham Lincoln, The Great Commoner” had the play’s name done in a hand-lettered Art Deco sans. This is the basis for Art Project JNL. According to Wikipedia, “the Works Progress Administration (renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration; WPA) was the largest and most ambitious American New Deal agency, employing millions of unemployed people (mostly unskilled men) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. The idea of Transport originates from text found on the large wooden boxes used for transport. Such text is still stencilled on them in the same way as the companies have done for decades, at least. That explains the typeface's name, too. If you find some similarities with Devin, you are right. Transport is nothing other than a special variant of Devin. But since the two are aimed for totally different uses, I decided to use two different names for them. Transport is a mecane and its use is primarily as a headline typeface. But in small quantities it can be used even for body setting, if special effects are desired. Transport was released in 1994.

Experimental lettering Stephen Rapp created in 1999 became the spark that Stephen's imagination transformed into the Tai Chi design. Tai Chi is a display face but it could also be used as a textured calligraphic script. Its delightful sense of movement distinguishes it from other scripts. Individual characters stand poised in a vertical Zen-like balance while at the same time displaying an inner rhythm that makes them appear to dance along the line. Some scribbles on a bar napkin, a note from a cute girl passed in history class, what is there to say but why not a typeface? Actually it's that late night, �let's get this typeface done� madness that causes these flights of fancy. Anything to relieve the boredom of doing all those kerning pairs. Or maybe it's sunspots? Ms Kitty is all uppercase letterforms so there are two versions of each letter, one in the cap position, another in the lowercase position. Besides the regular weight and bold, there�s a bolder and much bolder in the works. And perhaps there will be a "too bold to be believed" version. Depends on the sunspots.

This family was inspired by a Type Battle over at Typophile: How would you design a font metrically compatible with Helvetica, but better than Arial? Working with preset letter widths was an interesting constraint, both a relief and a limitation at the same time. I have done all the 4 basic weights, and the skewed obliques (done to a slightly less steep 10 degrees angle as opposed to the originals 12) has been optically adjusted. The letters have been designed quite close to the german/swiss grotesk tradition, but by using super-elliptical rounds, rounded dots and slightly curved outer diagonals the end result is a friendly looking font family that still looks... familiar. Cassandra Plus is my revised version of Cassandra, it can now be used all over Europe except Greece and Russia. I changed the weights a bit to make them more distinct. The Font has two widths of letters, wide Capitals on the (shift) uppercase-keys and narrow ones on the (no shift) lowercase-keys. You can match them as you like, but you should avoid having the same letter in one word in two different widths. I happened to mention to the proprietor of an antique barn near here that I'd be interested in any old typewriters she happened to come across. A conversation ensued, the proprietor withdrew into a back room, and she re-emerged with an old handwritten letter, dated 18 Sept. 1825 and spanning nearly three pages. The letter, penned by Samuel Clarke, a Princeton, Mass., pastor, sought donations for the victims of an accident at sea. I thought his script unique, stylistic, and definitely something worth digitizing, so I bought the old letter and took it home. Had to come up with several uppercase characters to round out the set, but the results seem good and proper. Full release has complete character set.

A new font inspired by vintage hand-painted paper signs. The Doorbuster Collection is based on retro hand-painted paper signs primarily seen in grocery stores from the 1920s through the 1970s. We meticulously hand-drew each font, modeling the spacing and uneven baseline found in vintage sign painting. The purposely organic ascenders and descenders, along with a huge set of ligatures/contextual alternates to avoid the same letters repeating when paired, give it a real hand-lettered look. This is the kind of letters I drew in school back in the 1980ies. I would never have guessed that I would do the same thing like 40 years later! I remember making a simple space game for my VIC-20 computer, and I needed some "data letters" (as I called it) - as far as I can remember, this is close to what I made 40-like years ago. Also, I was inspired by the well known series "Stranger Things" - you know, all that 80ies theme stuff took me down memory lane! :) Anyway, all the letters are handdrawn, using a squared paper as guide - at it may look simple, but it took me quite some time to finish this font (hence the name!)

I, uh, don't know quite what to say. I'd toiled so long over Pumpkinseed back in '96 that I guess I needed a good, wild ride to shake out the head cramps, or something. Whatever grabbed me, it forced me to sit down and design a typeface real fast directly in Fontographer (had never done that before). Took less than two hours to finish the regular character set. No way to explain it, but the exercise actually paid off -- I think. And now that there was Speed Bump, there simply had to be a companion dingbat set. (Beats the heck out of me.) Of all student work produced in Joost Schmidt?s Bauhaus classes, Reinhold Rossig?s (1903?1979) alphabet designs are perhaps closest to his master?s teachings: monolinear, geometric lettering, constructed on grids using compass and ruler. Drafts by Rossig, dated 1929, also demonstrate explorations of letterform width and x-height. Almost ninety years later, Elia Preuss carefully preserves Rossig?s letters and considerations in a proper typeface, by overcoming most of the optical mistakes captured in true geometric letterforms. To carry Rossig?s design further away from Schmidt?s influence, Preuss also lent more characteristic letters found on poster designs by fellow Bauhaus student Hermann Werner Kubsch. Reross is a true Bauhaus-influenced geometric sans, equipped with different historic influences and contemporary features.

Mouser has been an ongoing project that originated as a geometric sans of the same name before morphing into a similar, but entirely different family called TypoGraphica. It retains much of its earlier character such as limited contrast, high legibility, and tight spacing. Major changes were made for a simplistic, more cohesive look. This was done to maximize its usefulness for body text while keeping characteristics used for display purposes. Slices to top strokes are much more subtle with styling dialed down to a minimum. Stobart is a script font based on the characters written in a letter by Mr Henry Stobart, dated 1899.
