ITC Werkstatt is a result of the combined talents of Alphabet Soup's Paul Crome and Satwinder Sehmi, along with Ilene Strizver and Colin Brignall. It is inspired by the work of Rudolph Koch, the renowned German calligrapher, punchcutter, and type designer of the first third of this century, without being based directly on any of Koch's typefaces. Werkstatt has obvious affinities with the heavy, woodcut look of Koch's popular Neuland, but also with display faces like Wallau and even the light, delicate Koch Antiqua. Brignall began by drawing formal letters with a 55mm cap height, which Sehmi reinterpreted using a pen with a broad-edge nib. “Not an easy process,” says Brignall, “since one of the features of Koch's style is that while it was calligraphic in spirit, most of the time his counter shapes did not bear any resemblance to the external shapes, as they would in normal calligraphy. This meant that Sehmi could not complete a whole character in one go, but had to create the outside and inside shapes separately and then ink in the center of the letters.” The process was repeated, only without entirely filling in the outlines, for the Engraved version. Crome handled the scanning and digitization, maintaining the hand-made feel while creating usable digital outlines. “The collaboration of artisans with particular skills,” says Brignall, “in a modern-day, computer-aided studio environment, seems very much in step with the 'workshop' ethos that Rudolph Koch encouraged and promoted so much.”

ITC Chivalry is a calligraphic hybrid that honors the tradition of combining Roman capitals with italic lowercase letters. Drawn by Missouri lettering artist Rob Leuschke, who used a flat-nib pen on textured watercolor stock and then converted the drawings into a digital font, the design combines an old world" feel with "new world" legibility. A companion set of black letter caps completes the suite of characters. "I've loved drawing letters for as long as I can remember," says Leuschke. "Even in kindergarten, I tried to draw letters like my teacher." After graduating from college, Leuschke worked for a short time at a sign company in St. Louis, and in the early 1980s began working at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City. His talent as a calligrapher and lettering artist eventually brought him back to St. Louis to begin a freelance career. Our eye is able to join missing parts of worn letters back into undisturbed shapes. We tend to see things better than they really are. Thanks to this ability we ignore faults of those close to us as we can’t accept the fact that every once in a while we convene with an impaired entity. Typography is merely a man’s invention, hence imperfection and transience, albeit overlooked, are its key features. This typeface is based on worn-out letterings on tombstones in the St. Croce basilica in Florence. For hundreds of years, microscopic particles of marble are being taken away on the soles of visitors: the embossed figures become fossilised white clouds, fragments of inscriptions are nearing the limits of legibility. First missing are thin joins and serifs, then the main strokes finally slowly diminish into nothingness over time. Unlike an archaeologist, for whom even completely featureless stele is valuable, the typographer must capture the proper moment of wear, when the type is not too “new” but also not too much decimated. My brother is an architect, and I have always loved his lettering, you know, the style of writing that can be found on architectural drawings. There is a common thread to it, yet each architect or engineer brings their own personality to it. I have seen a similar style being used by some hand-letterers for invitations, place cards and signage. Inspired, I set out to create my own, and the result is my new typeface, Robard! I wanted something compact, somewhat modular, done quickly but with control, and sourced from hand-lettering. Starting out with a handful of pigment ink pens, I settled on a 0.1mm Copic Multi-Liner, and using a light table with a grid underneath the paper, I cranked out grouping after grouping, letter after letter, numbers, punctuation, accents, just trying to zero in on the feeling and the look I was after. There were some ideas that didn't work, like unicase (there would be no regular lowercase), or swash alternates. Ultimately, I ended up with a decent array of glyphs to choose from, and alternates like oldstyle numbers, and an alternate set of caps for the lowercase slots, and even alternative figures so doubles like 88 would be different. In the font, the OpenType ligature code automatically alternates the cap and lowercase (alternate cap) letters, and numbers as you type, lending Robard that hand-lettered look in a digital typeface that I was hoping for. There are also oldstyle figures, and unlimited fractions, ordinals, and a few alternate letters. I hope you like Robard!

Stubble is a distressed grunge font with many useful variations that make things easy. It comes in both a Regular and Bold version, and a Smudged version as if the print block has slipped a little bit just at the vital moment. Also there’s 2 jumbled versions with the letters and numbers, and some punctuation, at odd angles and slightly off-whack; there’s 2 versions with little bits of overprint on most of the main characters (as if the corners of the block or stamp have just caught the paper); a couple of Caps Only versions; plus condensed and expanded versions of the main faces. The Bold version is not an exact expanded version of the Regular version, please note, the characters are different (i.e. the misprinting is different) in the two weights. Western and Central European accented characters are included, and there’s a set of replacements for double-letter combinations such as bb, dd and OO, TT, so that 2 different letters will appear - which avoids having exactly the same grunge letter appearing twice in succession (20 or more pairings for each case, all the pairings that reasonably exist) which work as ligature replacements. The whole family constitutes a comprehensive package that offers a great variety of ways of presenting a grunge typeface for display, headlines and posters, while maintaining the thread of the same sans-serif style. The zip package contains both the TTF and OTF versions of the font. Install only one version on the same machine, installing both versions may produce all sorts of erratic behavior.

Pietro Aretino (1492 – 1556) Was an Italian author, playwright, poet, satirist and blackmailer, who wielded influence on contemporary art and politics. The most vigorous and versatile vernacular writer of the 16th century He was a very versatile writer, famous for his Lascivious Sonnets – which caused great scandal at the time – but also for his satirical verses, addressed to all the powerful people in Italy, without forgetting the many plays that he wrote for the theatre. Part of the charm of his letters is that through them you may know the whole of Venetian society from the top to the bottom. The little-known church of San Luca in Venice (in St Mark's district) has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries for people who are decidedly not devout: journalists, writers, free thinkers. In 1556 Pietro Aretino, a unique character of the Italian and Venetian Renaissance period was buried there. Such strong of personality, has contributed to generate the powerful wind of change that emerged from the italian renaissance. We have inspired on that talent searching for a new sight the famous Venetian typefaces. Probably looking for more vigour and contemporary digital style. This typeface is slightly condensed, lighter and has more contrast between the thick and thin letter-strokes, it has concave bracketed serif. Their ascender and descenders strokes are very shorts. Aretino family is completed by four weigh: Regular, SemiBold, Bold and ExtraBold, while Italics has three weighs. These fonts came with a full OpenType features and CE languages.

Hanna has its roots in the Plato and Cilantro fonts published earlier by Wilton Foundry. It is an informal roman and very legible at any size - a rare combination for many applications. Hanna was specifically designed to generate additional income for an orphanage in Ethiopia. Hanna Teshome runs an orphanage of roughly 140 children in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She is an amazing lady with a deep passion for orphan kids as well as innocent kids that find themselves in jail because their mothers have been imprisoned - they are treated as prisoners and are typically sexually abused - it is not uncommon for them to commit suicide when they are released from jail at age 18. Most of the orphans end up with Hanna because one or both of their parents have died from AIDS. Hanna relies entirely on donations to keep her orphanage running and this font is a small but tangible way for you to help make a difference in the lives of the orphan kids. I am committed to helping Hanna after visiting the orphanage several times and seeing the jails from where the kids have been rescued. Hanna is my hero because she stepped out of her comfort zone, with no financial support, to take care of the kids. My hope is that you will use this font as a messenger of good. The life of Molière is a story of struggle, hard work, domestic unhappiness, death and burial in obscurity and almost in shame. Molière left behind a body of work that not only changed the face of French classical comedy, but has also come to influence the work of other dramatists from around the world. Despite his own preference for tragedy, which he had tried to further with the Illustre Théâtre, Molière became famous for his farces, which were generally in one act and performed after the tragedy. Both the comic and the serious drama were powerfully affected by the work of Molière, not only in his own age and country but everywhere and up to the present time. Didot is a name given to a group of typefaces named after the famous French printing and type producing family. The classification is known as modern, or Didone. The typeface we know today was based on a collection of related types developed in the period 1784–1811. Firmin Didot cut the letters, and cast them as type in Paris. Along with Giambattista Bodoni of Italy, Firmin Didot is credited with establishing the use of the "Modern" classification of typefaces. The types that Didot used are characterized by extreme contrast in thick strokes and thin strokes, by the use of hairline serifs and by the vertical stress of the letters. As in the extreme contrasts of the literature of Molière, in Didione's typefaces, thick and thin strokes, straight and curved, are the most relevant characteristic for an era marked by the changes.

The alcoholic beverage Gin is drunk around the world, as far back as the 13th century. Originally distilled as a medicine, it draws its main flavour from juniper berries. Gin is colourless itself but – due to its smooth taste – a major ingredient in a long list of famous colourful cocktails. Gimlet, Singapore Sling, Negroni, Charlie Chaplin, French 75, Vesper, Tom Collins, White Lady, Aviation, Monkey Gland, Southside, Gin Gin Mule and New Orleans Fizz are but a few of them. That made us decide it simply cannot be missing from the Vette Letters font collection. Vette Letters designer Henning Brehm originally designed VLNL Gindicate for the 2015 action movie Hitman: Agent 47. It was specifically used for the logo and signage of the maverick ‘Syndicate International’ organisation in the film. It lay dormant in a folder for a while, when it was reworked into this flashy 5 weight family. VLNL Gindicate is a rounded modern sans serif family, suitable for a multitide of applications, corporate or otherwise. It has somewhat of a warm sci-fy feel, without being overtly techno-ish. In the family are 3 regular weights (Light - Regular - Bold), but also an Inline and Multiline weight for extra design possibilities. While researching the history of Onitsuka Tiger's branding and graphic design, I came across an odd, yet highly appealing piece of custom lettering on the company's ONICK ski boots from the 1970s. Reminiscent of aspects of the typeface Black-Out by Eli Carrico (released by my type foundry Wordshape), yet vertically compressed with razor-sliced counters and odd stencil element that makes up one of the legs of the "K", the ONICK lettering is a potential source for an intriguing modular font. I immediately thought of Ryoichi Tsunekawa as a potential collaborator to bring this piece of lettering to full-fledged life in the contemporary context. Based in Nagoya, Tsunekawa runs an independent type foundry called Dharma Type, including three specialized foundry sub-labels: Flat-It, devoted to display lettering; Prop-A-Ganda, a series of fonts inspired by and based on retro propaganda posters, movie posters, retail sign lettering & advertisements in the early 20th century; and Holiday Type, a series of decorative and retro scripts for holiday use. The past year has seen a flurry of notice of his work abroad, having been featured in both MyFonts' "Creative Characters" and YouWorkForThem's newsletter. As the work of most Japanese type designers is almost wholly unnoticed abroad, for Tsunekawa to be interviewed by two of the most popular type distribution companies in the world is definitely something beyond the norm. Perhaps it is because he works independently, or perhaps it is due to the charm and friendliness with which his typefaces are infused. Either way, this attention is both welcome and appreciated. Beyond mere charm, Tsunekawa's work is nuanced, detailed, and accessible due to its high level of finish. His fonts stand apart from his contemporaries in Latin typeface design in Japan due to his fascination with pop, vernacular and historical lettering from "non-pure" sources- whereas type designers like Kunihiko Okano and Akira Kobayashi have spent years analyzing the essence of Western letterform construction and unlocking the essence of Latin forms, Tsunekawa views surface and the awkward nature of his sources as being of value, as well. His irreverence for the formal doctrines of history imbue his typeface designs with a rugged inventiveness that would be missed by most- glyphs without source designs are guessed at and approximated, often in a manner wildly divergent from what Western eyes would assume. It is in these moments that I find sheer delight in Tsunekawa’s work and what make me most pleased to invite him aboard Neojaponisme and Onitsuka Tiger’s type development project. His assorted typefaces show an eclecticism in finish and as holistic systems- Tsunekawa's return email to me about the proposed type project showed a digital sketch of how a completed typeface family from the source lettering might look, rendered with an effortlessness and dedication to detail that belies a skilled craftsperson. Further development showed Tsunekawa’s rigor- the typeface in development rapidly featured glyphs ignored by many: a full set of fractions, Eastern European diacritics and accents, superior and inferior numerals, alternate characters, and custom ligatures - all designed with regulated, detailed spacing. ONICK is a typeface Tsunekawa should be proud of- an homage to a moment in history rendered in the absolute best fashion. We are proud to present it to the world! --Ian Lynam

TT Geekette is an experimental variable* serif with friendly and flexible character of shapes. In this project, we wanted to get away from simplifications and dry geometry and to experiment with the smoothness, softness and plasticity of forms. And in order to make the project a little more stylish and serious, we decided to make the font monospaced. When creating TT Geekette, we did not rely on traditional writing techniques or on the influence of pen movement on the font pattern. Despite the fact that judging by certain characters TT Geekette is a serif, the font is specifically “built” and “drawn”. There are several systemic techniques in font design, such as “loops” which set the plastic rhythm for the entire typeface. Variability in TT Geekette is influenced by contrast buildup in the font—moving the slider to adjust the variability axis, you gradually move from a completely non-contrast monolinear serif font to a font with a pronounced reverse contrast. In addition, with the help of the variability slider, you can remove serifs from the monolinear essence of the font. The TT Geekette family consists of 3 styles: the TT Geekette Bones—monolinear font, the TT Geekette Muscles—reverse contrast serif, and the TT Geekette Variable font. Each style contains over 450 glyphs. And yes, technically the typeface can be used in programming, at least you are guaranteed to get your share of bright emotions. *An important clarification regarding variable fonts. Preta, portuguese for a very pure kind of black, has its name very related to its concept: I wanted to make the fattest/darkest script ever. People who follow my work may notice its forms are very related to works of my past (1) but this time the challenge was to be very cautious with the white spaces between letters. Not only I followed some rules and ductus of the copperplate style of calligraphy but also I took a lot of inspiration in posters of the early Art Nouveau (specially in Alfred Roller of the Vienna Secession) where letters forms looked like black squares if not looked from a close distance. With Preta, I wanted to achieve that same idea of “darkness” and thanks to the always welcomed question -what if?- the font grew a lot. The result is a very fat font, that looks delicious. Due to possible customer needs, I designed Preta Small, so it can be used in smaller sizes. Preta Ao Sol (which literally means under the sun!) is a style with those lovely tiny details to give the sensation of bright. Preta Ao Sol Solo was made to be used as a layered font with Preta. Finally, Preta Capitals serves as a company for Preta. Hope you enjoy the font as much as I did when designing it: The fact that it’s full of alternates, swashes, ligatures and swirls makes it really pleasurable at the moment of using it. Novelty Script is a bold dynamic script, sharply delineated, yet fluid. Most of the lower case letters and many of the upper case letters have joins. The typeface was designed by Nicholas J. Werner and Gustave F. Schroeder and patented in March 1893. The original release was by the Central Type Foundry of St. Louis, Missouri. Although a part of ATF from 1892, the Central Type Foundry continued to operate under its own name until 1895. Novelty Script uses our new encoding, as noted in the All_customer_readme.txt. The Euro symbol has been moved to position 128 and the Zcaron/zcaron have been added at positions 142/158 respectively. Otherwise, Novelty Script has our usual idiosyncratic glyph selection, with the German ch/ck instead of braces, Western European accented letters, lower case “o” and “u” with Hungarian umlaut and our usual Hand-in-Hand symbol. But that is not all. With the takeover of the Central Type Foundry by ATF, a group of special characters appeared. All are included in this font, except the “&Co” and the "'s", for a total of nine in all. The “Ch” and “nd” ligatures are especially interesting because of the impact they have on the color and overall appearance of the page. Download the PDF Type Specimen for locations. This is a fun font to use. Its strength is print, where it gives a page a refreshing look. The joins sometimes have difficulty on the screen, in spite of extensive hinting.
