The African Textile font had two major influences. A roughened and worn version of Daily Tabloid JNL was originally created as a non-exclusive custom font for a client. The design emulates the look of old letterpress wood type and has now been released commercially as Regional News JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions. In casting about for a name, I decided to call it Valerie after Valerie Hope, a mindreader of days long gone, who played California theatres in the 1930s and 1940s. The other day I drank a glass of white wine, which was partly made with Colombard grapes. When I created this font, I needed a bit of a ‘posh’ name, so I settled on Colombard. Colombard is a nice, handwritten font. Quite elegant, but cheeky at the same time. It comes with extensive language support and a full set of Discretionary Ligatures for double letter combinations.
