GRUND is a new fontographic adaption of a remarkable 1920s epigraphical find in the city of Leipsic. This old well-known European trade fair hotspot struggled with a severe shortage of exhibition space around 1920. The solution was to dig deeper into the matter – literally – and 1924 the world’s first underground trade fair exhibition hall was opened right under the city’s central market square. After several changes of use during the past decades the sophisticated Art Deco entrance structure (architect: Otto Droge) was re-opened in December 2013 as a gateway to a new subway rail track. – The original brass lettering of the UNTERGRUNDMESSHALLE MARKT has been retrieved – and served as the inspiration for this new and unique font. In his 1538 book on measurement, Albrecht Dürer gave clear descriptions and drawings about the proportions of the letters in both Roman and 'fraktur' alphabets (from Latin 'fractura', meaning that it's broken up with lots of different angles rather than smooth curves). Here is the fraktur alphabet as a font completed for use today, with a few characters modernised and some gaps filled. Of course there are countless examples of fraktur fonts already circulating, and indeed one foundry even has another version of this particular one; but we have different approaches to some of the questions raised, we have aimed at a more even tracking (horizontal spacing), and the 260 glyphs in our version include accents and other diacritics, and the modern symbols which Dürer would surely have embraced if he had had access to the internet.

Henry Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Body (the book, not Grey’s Anatomy, the TV series) was heavily scoured to find more unusual bones shaped like letters. I like cookies. Especially butter cookies and ginger nuts. The word cookie comes from the Dutch word ‘koekje’ - which means exactly the same. Cookie Crumble is a cute little font that I made on a rainy day. I just needed something that looked and sounded happy and I guess it applies to this font. Cookie Crumble comes with a bunch of alternates, a full set of diacritics and a bit of sunshine to chase away your rainy day.

The Vienna Workshop was a production community of visual artists, which operated from 1903 to 1932. The emphasis lay on fine craftsmanship and its motto was: "Better to work 10 days on one product than to manufacture 10 products in one day". The typeface before you was based on some of the artwork produced by Vienna Workshop artists, in particular that of Koloman Moser. Vienna Workshop comes with some unusual glyphs, intriguing ligatures and Babylonian language support.

This font owes its inspiration to the Bauhaus, the celebrated 1920s design collective which more or less invented modernism as we know it in the applied arts: from architecture and industrial design to graphics and typography. In its day, Bauhaus typography would have been considered brutally modern. Nowadays, when unadorned sans serifs are commonplace, it still has a freshness and quirkiness that sets it apart. With this new release I've tried to recapture the zeitgeist of those pioneering days.

Bauen (worker in German) is a tribute to the Bauhaus school that has just completed its first centenary and whose ideas are still relevant. It is a geometric typeface inspired by the sans serif typefaces prevailing in those years, and whose cradle resides in the Bauhaus school. It has a wide language coverage, and a generous range of OpenType functionalities, to make it an all-rounder for our day to day, and especially for corporate use.

Arek is Rosetta’s award-winning collection of Latin and Armenian families. Although ITC Styleboy has a retro feel, it isn't based on any earlier typeface. As far as inspiration goes," says designer Chester Wajda, "I'd have to say comic strips of the '20s and '30s, and silent-film marquee lettering from the '20s - with a hint of a Chinese brush?" He originally created the typeface for a children's book he was working on. "I wanted it to be fun, but still somewhat formal in its underlying structure," he says. "It's largely based on right and 45-degree angles, with slight tucks inward on the stems and bowls, and a few flourishes here and there." Styleboy's top-heavy look is most noticeable in the caps, but it's exaggerated too in the "8" and the lowercase "g." Styleboy is Wajda's first typeface design."

Wolfsburg is a classic blackletter stencil typeface. It is reminiscent of the days before computers when the best way to reproduce letters quickly was to stencil them.

Black Drum is a rare revival typewriter face, made digital from analog samples gathered with great care by Coniglio Type. A time and place; type and life. Black Drum is contemporary designer type, made from the struck steel hammers of an Art Deco Period san serif face transferred from a mechanical 1926 custom editor Royal Portable typewriter. Anna Conroy of Type Heritage, LLC, Philadelphia comments on Black Drum and its new place in time today: “Wow! nice lookin’ face Joseph! —Perfect, somewhere between Cable; [Rudolph Koch, 1927] (which was about the first transatlantic telegraph cable) with its raised x-height; and Futura [Paul Renner, 1928]. Yup, it has that great “Monopoly Game” question mark -- and all on a period-piece typewriter! You should have no trouble grafting that sorely needed Euro symbol.” –And he very well did!
