A Colporteur is a peddler of books, newspapers, and similar literature. When I was young, we often got visits from colporteurs - mostly they wanted to sell us a very expensive encyclopedia. I haven’t seen them for a while - the internet probably killed their trade, as there are numerous free encyclopedias out there. The idea for Quirky was born while I was looking at a book of etchings by British artist Graham Clarke. His signature, crawling spider-like across the page, fascinated me with its casual, almost messy, inky dark and light drama. I started scribbling the alphabet as I imagined he would write it, based on his signature, then continued, adding curls, making the characters more angular, and refining the dramatic play between dark and light. Finally, Quirky appeared. Apparently casual, Quirky is, in fact, a true connected script. Quirky is characteristic of contemporary handwriting: It appears loose, angular, unstructured, and free, while maintaining good form and legibility. Its baseline is varied, creating an impression of impatient handwriting, without losing legibility. My daily challenge is how to get my kids out of bed, feed them breakfast, get them to dress, wash and pack their school bags and drop them off at school before the bell rings. The rest of the day, the challenge is to renovate our house, get my work done, pick up the kids from school (plus all of their friends, who want to come and play) and cook dinner. Of course, the word ‘challenge’ was misused by the internet. Not too long ago, there seemed to be and endless stream of crazy challenges that ended up hurting or even killing a few people. Daily Challenge font is none of the above: it is a clean cut, 100% handmade, all caps font. The only challenge here is how to adapt your design so it fits this font perfectly… ;-)

Dante was designed by Giovanni Mardersteig. Mardersteig started work on Dante after the Second World War when printing at the Officina Bodoni returned to full production. He drew on his experience of using Monotype Bembo and Centaur to design a new book face with an italic which worked harmoniously with the roman. Originally hand-cut by Charles Malin, Dante was adapted for mechanical composition by Monotype in 1957. The new digital font version has been re drawn, by Monotype's Ron Carpenter, free from any restrictions imposed by hot metal technology. The Dante font family was issued in 1993 in a range of three weights with a set of titling capitals. Poliphilus is a facsimile of the text of the 'Hypnerotomachia Poliphili', after which it is named, published by Aldus Manutius in Venice in 1499, using a type that had been cut by Francesco Griffo. As a design, Poliphilus is related to Bembo, but whereas Bembo was redrawn, with the intention of making a new face based on an old design, Poliphilus is an exact copy of fifteenth century printing on hand made paper. So exact in fact that even the original ink spread is reproduced. This may not seem like a very sound idea for a typeface, but the letterforms are good and the design is functionally successful. Blado, the italic for use with Poliphilus, was used by Antonio Blado in 1539, and designed by the calligrapher Ludovico degli Arrighi. The Poliphilus type is used mainly for book and text work."

The Vtg Stencil fonts from astype are based on real world stencils from several countries. The Italian stencils that I chose as a model for this font are roughly based on classic French stencil letters. Please compare the figures (numbers) with their French counterparts. However, the Italian stencils are made with a different production technique. The design of the letters is clearly not punch-cut into the plates, maybe they are drilled, milled or etched. Details such as the serifs look bold and clumsy, and when using the stencils as they are meant, with viscous sign paint, smaller details easily fade away. So I took my freedom to design a font close to the original design but adding several typographic tweaks to let it shine, hoping to get closer to the intended design idea of these Italian stencils. Robert Hunter Middleton drew the original design of Stellar for the Ludlow Typograph Company in Chicago. Work began in the late 1920s, when Middleton was asked to create a sans serif type family to compete with European imports of Futura and Kabel. Stellar was Middleton's attempt to raise the ante. Where Futura and Kabel were geometric in design and monotone in weight, Stellar was based on roman character proportions and stroke weighs were stressed. In the late 1990s, Dave Farey took on the task of reviving the Stellar design. While Ludlow cut Stellar in a full range of point sizes, the family was limited to just a roman and bold design. Farey's revival is twice as large a family. It ranges from a very light called Stellar Nova to a very bold called Zeta In between are Lyra and Epsilon.

A Trollkatt in Norwegian myth, is the cat associated with witches. The last few days a stray ginger cat seems to have adopted us - she comes into the house, lies down on the carpet and loves the cat food we bought her. We have posted some ‘found a cat’ messages online and hung op some flyers - just in case someone is missing a cat. Because of the stray, I decided that I should name this font something cattish, so Trollkatt is what popped up. The font is quite nice; I made it with my Chinese ink and a brush, from which I cut most of the hairs. This font won’t catch mice, but it will put some magic into your designs! And the stray cat… well, if she isn’t chipped and no one comes to fetch her, we will keep her. #happyending

My pet peeve for many years has been with the 'rn' in small texts, especially with my smart phone. I felt that perhaps others may have the same peeve. I decided to try and fix that with Atlantica. As you can see in poster No. 4. "With the combination of 'rn' in small text it tends to appear as 'm'. Therefore it may be read as 's t e m' instead of 's t e r n'. Altalntica has an alternate 'rn'. By invoking the < Contextual-Alternate > feature. Atlantica will replace each 'rn' - or you may individually change them if you desire". Also note the deep cuts to help legibility for smaller texts. This combination apparently does not appear in many words, but when it does it can suggest a different word as in; eastern, stern, tarnish, Tornado, Turn and in some names as well.

1st Ave is the most experimental of my typefaces. I took a picture of a metal and neon sign in the East Village of New York City. These signs are slowly being replaced by LED and LCD displays, but if you look hard, you can still find quite a few in the city. The signs give a mid 20th century feel to the city. To design 1st Ave, I took a picture of the sign, scanned it and increased the contrast in Photoshop so that the photographic forms became line art. There weren't enough letterforms in the sign to create the whole alphabet, so I cut up the strokes and collaged them back together to finish the entire alphabet. Important Note: 1st Ave is an experimental typeface and is not compatible with certain software such as Microsoft Word.

Vulpa is a charming serif family in regular, italic and bold, informed by the proportions of a personal favorite, Plantin. The quirky foxtail terminals (inspired in part by my script font, Gelato Script) can be seen across all three styles. These little details make the typeface very expressive at display sizes, but practically disappear at text sizes, making for a very versatile face. Across the three styles there are a number of useful OpenType features which make Vulpa capable of demanding typographic work, even though there are only three styles. Regular, italic and bold are all you really need anyway! The regular and bold weights both include small caps, and the italic features swash capitals for most letters. The italic also features quaint discretionary ligatures, and all styles include standard ligatures, automatic fractions, proportional and tabular, lining and oldstyle figures. If this isn't enough, the Vulpa family also includes Ornaments and Drop-Cap fonts. There is an ornament for A to B, a to b and 0 to 9. These have been carefully designed to match the feel of the text fonts, and many are influenced by ornaments and fleurons from the ATF 1912 Type Specimen book. The drop-caps have an engraved look, and two color versions can be made by overlaying upper and lower case. Despite the lack of weights compared to ‘workhorse’ faces, the charm and versatility of Vulpa make it a really useful typeface, that I hope you'll enjoy using as much as I enjoyed making.

'Meeeeoooow'! Seventies is another of my 'funkadelic' attempts (1) to fill the existing gap of seventyish looking fonts. In my opinion, that decade has a hidden treasure regarding type that remains unexplored: Only very few fonts rescue its 'groovy' essence, its ‘colourful’ qualities. But, don't have a cow man , and keep on truckin! With Seventies, my new foxy mama , your projects will stand out among the rest. Since there’s not much information available about this kind of lettering I had to get ideas from other styles: Nowadays it’s easy to find all kind of books or guides to understand and practice how different styles of calligraphy and lettering should be done. However, for some reason, 60s and 70s letters seemed to ignore/be free of rules... Was this suggesting the birth of postmodernism? I incorporated some ideas of the copperplate style of calligraphy: The ductus of its forms may be compared to the way letters are made in snell/engrosser’s script. Obviously, this is just the idea behind; the delicacy of thins is replaced here with the graceful imprint of really thick thicks with a brushy look and tons of good vibe . Seventies will work awesome in posters, brands, magazines, book-covers of any kind, due to its modern look adapted to our century. Well, catch you on the flip~side ! The Vernacular trilogy was designed by Swiss designer Hans-Jürg Hunziker, who had worked for Adrian Frutiger in Paris for many years. Based on the concept of a transitional Linear Antiqua, he has developed a colorful bouquet of typefaces that contain the entire spectrum of typefaces for book design and corporate identity. Thanks to his "Swiss school" and his outstanding skills, he has succeeded in giving the typefaces a particularly noble and sympathetic expression.
