Meman is a practical sans serif that was enthusiastic about adding details to have more personality compared to a neo-grotesque typeface. The typeface was crafted between the concepts of mechanical oval forms and serpentine curves, with the help from open terminals, contrast joints. These 2 concepts are very different, but they balanced each other to help remain the neutral feeling as a whole. Many details are optimized so that on small scales, Meman has nothing special. But when use on bigger scales, letters are revealed to have been dived in visual flourishes, such as the "e". Also, to avoid broken fragments and remain neutral, some details were converted to alternatives. Meman has 9 upright weights (from Thin to Black), and some OpenType features like fractions, ligatures, custom decorative icons, and alternatives for "A", "E", "V", "Z", ... or "a". There are more than 660 glyphs, which support a wide range of Latin languages, including Vietnamese. Relato has a low contrast and “a muscular” structure that makes it useful for setting longer text. In display sizes it has a variety of details that lends it a unique and personal expression. The formal principle of the serif, the variety of terminal strokes and the combination of curves and semi-straight lines gives the Relato a more “human” flavor. The inspiration for the design comes from different traditional calligraphic styles. The upper case letter, for example, is based on roman capitals from the Rennaissance, whereas the lower case relates to humanist handwriting. Even so, Relato is a decidedly contemporary typeface, proposing individual ideas on the design of type. The italic has a distinct typographic color thanks to the construction principle of broken lines. The bold weights have an increased contrast in the union of the strokes which helps improve legibility in small sizes and reinforce their personality in display sizes. Neo Sans began as an intriguing assignment from a branding agency. The agency’s client wanted an “ultra modern” type family that was "futuristic without being gimmicky or ephemeral.” When a bureaucratic decision cancelled the project, Monotype staff designer Sebastian Lester decided to finish the design on his own. “I was left with a sketchbook full of ideas,” he said, “and thought it would be a shame not to see what came of them.” Lester decided that the principal ingredient of an "ultra modern" typeface was simplicity of character structure: a carefully drawn, monoline form, open letter shapes and smooth, strong curves. By further amplifying these qualities, he crossed the line from modern to futuristic. Two highly functional and versatile typefaces emerged. These are Neo Sans and Neo Tech, designs Lester describes as "legible without being neutral, nuanced without being fussy, and expressive without being distracting." AmpleNu is a display type family derived from the Ample typeface. It has optical mono-linear stroke and a bit squarish form in nature. It has a seamless stroke movement instead of sharp angles formed by the junction of two strokes, which is a prominent feature of its design. It is designed to be a little eye-catching yet legible. It has clear and distinguishable letterforms, which helps to elaborate and emphasize the message. It is graphically strong and commands the viewer's attention. The overall appearance of type is suitable for setting and using it as heading, title, headline, logotype, etc. The type family consists of sixteen styles which include eight upright weights and their italics. AmpleNu has a bit more squarish counters and angles than Ample typeface, it even has straight terminals while Ample typeface has a slight curve. In addition to this, few characters have some major or minor changes and the letter ‘g’ plus ‘y’ and their respective diacritics have alternate style variations. AmpleNu is designed by Aakash Soneri during the period between 2018-2020.

This typeface appears to be straight out of a science fiction movie thriller. Mingo is a slightly condensed, somewhat vain gothic with thick vertical strokes proudly tapering downward. Capitals which are normally completely round are now square inside with curving outside corners. Lowercase letters carry the same design traits. And, in the capital A and H, crossbars extend on both sides helping give the face a pronounced retro look. Mingo Gothic is a close cousin to Raleigh Gothic and is an excellent choice for book covers and large display settings. Small caps, fractions, and alternate characters have also been developed for greater layout versatility. Mingo Gothic Bold is now available in the OpenType format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version as stylistic alternates, historical forms, small caps, oldstyle figures, ornaments, and f-ligatures. These advanced features work in current versions of Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress. Check for OpenType advanced feature support in other applications as it gradually becomes available with upgrades.

Over the past couple of years I received quite a number of unusual and surprising requests to modify my type designs to suit projects of personal nature, but none top the ones that asked me to typeset and modify tattoos using Burgues Script or Adios. At first the whole idea was amusing to me, kind of like an inside joke. I had worked in corporate branding for a few years before becoming a type designer, and suddenly I was being asked to get involved in personal branding, as literally “personal” and “branding” as the expression can get. After a few such requests I began pondering the whole thing from a professional perspective. It was typography, after all, no matter how unusual the method or medium. A very personal kind of typography, too. The messages being typeset were commemorating friends, family, births, deaths, loves, principles, and things that influenced people in a deep and direct way, so much so that they chose to etch that influence on their bodies and wear it forever. And when you decide to wear something forever, style is of the essence. After digging into the tattooing scene, I have a whole new respect for tattoo artists. Wielding that machine is not easy, and driving pigment into people’s skin is an enormous responsibility. Not to mention that they're some of the very few who still use a crafty, hands-on process that is all but obsolete in other ornamentation methods. Some artists go the extra mile and take the time to develop their own lettering for tattooing purposes, and some are inventive enough to create letters based on the tattoo’s concept. But they are not the norm. Generally speaking, most tattoo artists use generic type designs to typeset words. Even the popular blackletter designs have become quite generic over the past few decades. I still cringe when I see something like Bank Script embedded into people’s skin, turning them into breathing, walking shareholder invitations or government bonds. There’s been quite a few attempts at making fonts out of whatever original tattoo designer typefaces can be found out there - wavy pseudo-comical letters, or rough thick brush scripts, but as far as I could tell a stylish skin script was never attempted in the digital age. And that’s why I decided to design Piel Script. Piel is Spanish for skin. In a way, Piel Script is a removed cousin of Burgues Script. Although the initial sketches were infused with some 1930s showcard lettering ideas (particularly those of B. Boley, whose amazing work was shown in Sign of the Times magazine), most of the important decisions about letter shapes and connectivity were reached by observing whatever strengths and weaknesses can be seen in tattoos using Burgues. Tattoos using Adios also provided some minor input. In retrospect, I suppose Affair exercised some influence as well, albeit in a minor way. I guess what I'm trying to say is there is as much of me in Piel Script as there is in any of the other major scripts I designed, even though the driving vision for it is entirely different from anything else I have ever done. I hope you like Piel Script. If you decide it to use it on your skin, I'll be very flattered. If you decide to use it on your skateboard or book cover, I'll be just as happy. Scripts can't get any more personal than this. Piel Script received the Letter2 award, where they selected the best 53 typefaces of the last decade, organised by ATypI.

Introducing Terrapin! I named this after listening to a song called "Terrapin on a Tightrope." Considering the fact that a terrapin is a kind of turtle, it makes that song title seem pretty harrowing! This font has heavy roots in one of my favorite lettering styles. It's rough, scrappy, and likes to do its own thing. It has a full uppercase and lowercase set, numbers, punctuation, and lots of extended Latin characters for language support. It also includes alternate versions of 17 lowercase letters. Where Terrapin really shines is in the ligatures. I've written separate two- and three-letter combined forms for some of the most common letter combinations, and a few uncommon ones to boot. There are almost 100 ligatures in here, all PUA-encoded so everyone can access them (and also coded so if your software does automatic ligature replacement, they'll pop right in).

Up until the late 1920s, it was a popular habit in American songwriting to use African Americans as the topic of compositions using denigrating themes, words and even exaggerated character illustrations on the covers of the published sheet music. One such example of what was considered "entertainment" for its time was a piece entitled "Little Black Me". While this now socially and morally unacceptable piece of forgettable tripe is collected by some only for the historical documentation of the times they reflected, one good "positive" came out of this negative chapter of our country's musical heritage: The beautiful floral ornamented letters in the song's title has yielded Fancy Free JNL. Originally hand-lettered on an arc, these spurred Roman letters have been re-drawn, and are offered in both the regular design and a companion version with the ornamentation removed for lettering that is less ornate.
