Feltboard JNL was drawn from images of letters and numbers contained in a felt board (also known as a flannel board) sign kit from the 1940s or 1950s. The irregularity of stroke widths and character shapes is representative of the actual shapes of the die-cut pieces found within this kit. Note: The cap height is slightly smaller than normal for the respective point size. This will give the effect of wider line spacing - similar to that of hand-made signs.

Based on drawings of Medieval versals (capitals used at beginning of verses in manuscripts) by Frederic W. Goudy. Works beautifully as initials with Goudy Text Oldstyle. Uppercase only, no numerals or punctuation; several letters have alternates. Framed, inversed caps are also included. This version of Lombardy Capitals is purposely less regular and clean-cut than some available to maintain a more hand-drawn look similar to the irregularities that would be found in a Medieval manuscript. The alternates help contribute to that look.

Giambattista Bodoni (1740–1813) was called the King of Printers and the Bodoni font owes its creation in 1767 to his masterful cutting techniques. Predecessors in a similar style were the typefaces of Pierre Simon Fournier (1712–1768) and the Didot family (1689–1836). The Bodoni font distinguishes itself through the strength of its characters and embodies the rational thinking of the Enlightenment. The new typefaces displaced the Old Face and Transitional styles and was the most popular typeface until the mid-19th century. Bodoni’s influence on typography was dominant until the end of the 19th century and even today inspires new creations. Working with this font requires care, as the strong emphasis of the vertical strokes and the marked contrast between the fine and thick lines lessens Bodoni’s legibility, and the font is therefore better in larger print with generous spacing. Chauncey H. Griffith’s Poster Bodoni displays characteristics of the advertisement fonts of the first half of the 20th century. The font was most often used for posters and signs, eventually including neon signs.

Vintage Price Tags JNL comprises three sets of numbers in both ribbon, circle and star patterns which, when combined will produce point-of-sale price elements. The designs were re-drawn from examples found in an old wood type catalog, and are now collected in digital format. Ribbon-style numbers are found on the upper case keys. A through J have the large numbers, K through T are the smaller, underlined numbers. The remaining upper case keys contain the dollar sign, cents sign and the phrases "each", "for", "dozen" and "pair". On the lower case, the circle set of combination numbers are on the following keystrokes: The keys a through j are the left side semi-circle numbers and the "k" key is a blank left side semi-circle. The l through u keys are the right side semicircle numbers and the "v" keystroke is a blank right side semi-circle. The star set is on the standard numbers keys for the left side of the star, with the right side characters on the corresponding shift keystrokes for the number keys. In following the original design examples, a cents sign follows the numbers on the right side of the circle or star sets. The lower case w through z contain a left side star blank, a left side star with $1, a right side star blank and a right side star with small double zeros (to comprise a star shaped price tag for $1.00).

Mimeograph Lettering JNL is based on one of the numerous plastic lettering templates once manufactured by the A.B. Dick Company of Chicago and is available in both regular and oblique versions. The mimeograph utilized a porous drum which inked the backside of a waxed stencil sheet. Unlike traditional stencils which have cut out areas that are directly inked or painted, a mimeo stencil has the area to be printed scratched away by removing the wax coating with a stylus. The resulting image allows the ink from the drum to seep through the sheet and transfer to the blank paper. As with a companion font (Mimeograph Template JNL), the character shapes follow the routed letters of the template, complete with rounded terminals. Waite Park JNL is based on the smallest of the die-cut letters and numbers contained in the Webway Sign Cabinet - once manufactured by the Holes-Webway Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The largest of the set's sizes (2 inch) was the model for Sign Kit JNL, the medium size (1-1/8 inch) was used to make Sign Production JNL and this font is a version from the 3/4 inch size. Each size of alphabet and numerals have their own unique characteristics, although they all follow the same basic font style, which is reminiscent of classic Art Deco-era sanserif typefaces. The name Waite Park JNL was derived from a division of Holes-Webway that (for some reason lost to time) distributed their sign kits under the name Waite Park Sign Company, located in the Minnesota city of the same name.

The main reason I wanted to design this font was because I really didn’t like how poorly some fonts tried to mimic an Oriental appearance. Trying to make western words appear Asian with a font composed of brush strokes is almost always doomed to failure. However, I find Croasian works extremely well with one syllable words that are Asian sounding. A good font to have if you want to express an Asian name or business phonetically in a western alphabet while still retaining an Asiatic feel. An ad in the April 19, 1919 edition of Motion Picture News for the (now lost) silent drama "Josselyn's Wife" featured some wonderfully stylized Art Nouveau hand lettering. Primarily a condensed character set with rounded serifs, there are a number of letters that take liberties in both width and character shape. Adding to this, [mostly vertical] parallel lines are cut through the characters to create a "striped' type of "double engraved' effect. Architype Universal is a collection of avant-garde typefaces deriving mainly from the work of artists/designers of the inter-war years, whose ideals underpin the design philosophies of the modernist movement in Europe. Their ‘universal’, ‘single alphabet’ theory limits the character sets. Architype Bayer was drawn from Bauhaus Archiv sketches for a minimal sans typeface that was created in 1925 by Herbert Bayer, based on his single-alphabet student thesis. This ‘universal’ alphabet was designed for exclusive Bauhaus use, but never cut as a typeface.

Supra Rounded is the newest addition to my big SUPRA-family. It really rounds of the huge family with a friendly design, that makes it an excellent and elegant text-typeface. It is an OpenType family for professional typography with an extended character set of over 700 glyphs and extensive kerning. It supports more than 40 Central- and Eastern-European as well as many Western languages (except Greek and Cyrillic). Charles W. "Plot" Plotner was a cartoonist who had developed a template-based cartooning set for kids circa 1952 called "Plot-O". A companion set was called "Plot-O the Clown". "Plot-O" consisted of two plastic templates with pre-cut and numbered cartoon shapes. By following the simple directions and tracing the corresponding parts, any youngster could create basic cartoons of people and finish them off with their own details. The hand-lettered instruction booklet provided the design inspiration for Cartoon Panel JNL.

Gildersleeve evokes the spirit of the Arts and Crafts movement of the 1920s. Think of a hand-cut Roman display face, with loving care lavished over each serif and letterform. Gildersleeve is offerered in the classic combination of a regular face, a bold face, an italic and an italic bold. Any of them are ideal for poster or cover work, as well as for chapter and section headings in a longer document, in combination with a text face such as Vertrina or Clementhorpe Text.

Kantor's modular stroke and humanist axis defines it as an old-style 15th century Venetian serif typeface. At the same time, the lowercase Kantor alphabet is relatively compressed and has the vertical stems of a textura blackletter. However, Kantor has distinct, penformed shapes and has also kept all the organic irregularities of traditional handwriting (or punch-cutting, as it were). Kantor is not happy, not sad - but calm and dignified. Perfect for buddhist poems, fantasy video games and antique scrolls to give that "long time ago"-feeling.

Maine is a modernized book antiqua consisting of six styles and matching italics. Maine's cuts are from Light to Extrabold, of which Regular and Slightly Bolder Book are especially suitable for longer texts. Thanks to its clear features and high x-height, Maine creates a beautiful and legible body text. Maine gives a professional, no-nonsense impression and it’s best used in editorial, books, magazines and everywhere where you can use many different styles and sizes of the same typeface. Simplicity, delicacy and elegance are the words that best characterize Rufina. Based on an idea that was conceived long before its “birth”, Rufina was created from dark-text on light-background combinations. Refined and at the same time distant, Rufina seduces the viewer in a subtle and elegant manner. Blending of contrasty, Bodoni-influenced forms with the emotive touch of the calligraphers pen. This family consists of two weights, their italic counterparts, plus a set of alternate cuts — each containing a selection of illustrative ornaments.

The Troyer AR ornaments are based on the first series of ornaments designed for American Type Founders by Johannes Troyer (1902-69). They were cast in 36 and 48 point in 1953 by ATF who said that they ‘mark a distinct and refreshing departure from the motif of earlier ornaments, and add a crisp touch to your finer printing’. Kenneth Day, in The Typography of Press Advertisement (1956), found them 'clean-cut and bright and clearly showing their calligraphic origins . . . useful for single decorative touches'.

Basati is a display typeface designed for headlines and hard-hitting messages. It is sharp, heavy, and hard as an axe. But don’t be fooled by its rough look or the impression of having been carved with a machete. Each character is precise and sharp as a scalpel, and in that perfectly cut informality lies her deliberately wild temperament. Perhaps because its design was conceived during a severe bout of lumbago, its strokes are heavy and provocative, as if trying to defy logic and gravity alike.

The Joseph Struhl Company of Long Island, NY pioneered the use of cling vinyl in the field of reusable signs. Along with sets of die-cut letters and numbers, one of their main products for many years was a set of letters and numbers silk screened onto vinyl panels for larger window displays. Cling Vinyl JNL is Jeff Levine's tribute to this sign kit and its innovative contribution to retail marketing. The font comes in two styles: Cling Vinyl JNL has white characters on a black background and Cling Vinyl Clear JNL has black characters on an open (clear) background. For those wanting a "panel" space between words, there are two different width ones on the < and > keys. Please note: limited character set.

This dynamic athletic block has the need for speed. VT Gladius is a display typeface loaded with energy and ready to take off. Each letterform is built on a system of angles that generate a distinct rhythm, drawing the eye through the shape, making every word feel more dynamic. Further reinforcing this are the slightly thicker baseline-adjacent horizontal stems — alluding to the ink-pooling that lower strokes have in traditional penmanship — creating a “bounce” that gives each letter that much more personality. A 1916 book entitled “Lettering” by Thomas Woods Stevens features a number of hand lettered alphabets; some plain, others unique. One of the more novel examples was designed by Harry Lawrence Gage and featured letters and numbers with a crude, wavy style described in the book as “adapted to wood block and linoleum cutting”. To keep the design as close to the original as possible, the image from the book page was auto-traced, with each character given just enough of a clean-up as to retain its own quirkiness while smoothing out any jagged lines and fixing some curves. From there, other necessary characters were created for the digital font, and the end result is Tenement JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Steelplate Gothic Pro is a sans serif font family with traditional and drop shadow weights. It shares letterform similarities to conventional Copperplate Gothic families, but has no spur serif endings. Most of the original designs came from the Western Type Foundry when BB&S acquired it in 1918; all were cut by Robert Wiebking. It was recast in 1954 by American Type Founders (ATF). Steve Jackaman (ITF) designed and produced a digital version of the original single weight in 1997. In 2017, Jackaman completely redrew and expanded the family, adding entirely new condensed variants and true small caps. Steelplate Gothic Pro has a masculine, industrial feel, and works effortlessly at display and subhead sizes. It shares letterforms with its sans serif sister family, Barnsley Gothic.
