This font began as an attempt of draw alternatives to the images of Microsoft’s Wingdings, but then grew beyond that. This new version from late 2010 has over 1400 characters, including almost all of the geometric shapes in unicode 2500 and 2B00 ranges, almost all of the arrows in the unicode 2100, 2700, 2900, and 2B00 ranges, almost all of the dingbats and symbols in the unicode 2600 and 2700 ranges, many of the pictures, symbols, and emoticons in the 1F300 to 1F600 ranges, and a few of the miscellaneous technical items in the 2300 range. There are also pictures on the standard open type letters, most of which can be accessed from the keyboard. However, most of the characters in this typeface have to be accessed using their unicode designation. In Windows this is done with the alt key and the unicode hex number. On the Macintosh the easiest way (and for the five digit unicode characters, perhaps the only way) is to use the “Special Characters” window under the Edit Menu in the Finder. A unicode index of the font is provided in a pdf file that was generated using FontLab. However, it only has four of the unicode digits for the five-digit elements. Almost all of the unicode numbers starting with F should have a 1 in front of the F.

Created by German designer Jürgen Weltin, Linotype’s Agilita is a contemporary humanist sans serif family with a wide variety of weights, including both ultra thin hairline options and heavier, dark type. Agilita has rather classical proportions; its clear ascenders and descenders lend more distinct word shapes. Weltin’s design has a dynamic, yet strong and very functional appearance with a fine but clear emphasis on the horizontals. This traditional approach makes it a versatile typeface for large-scale text setting, but it can also be used in complex information design projects, and orientation systems, for example. Hence it was developed carefully into a wide range type family system consisting of 32 styles. This even covers the requirements for display and headline setting. Corresponding condensed weights are suitable where horizontal space is scarce, as in narrow columns and tables, for example. The Agilta Hairline and Agilta Ultra Thin styles were especially made for display use. These fonts should be set at a minimum size of 20 pt for printed project, and about 40 pt on output to laser printers, depending on the paper used. Agilita’s character sets include special symbols and signs that may be used in dictionaries; like arrows for lemmata and signs for cross references, idioms or colloquial language. There are two sets of arrows available in each weight for use in orientation systems. Each font in the Agilta family is built according to Linotype’s Extended European character set guidelines. The font is inspired by the history of the native land - a city that blossoms on a high mountain, surrounded by the blue ribbon of the Unava River. The swift rapidity of the river, the important slow flow of its reservoirs, golden beaches and steep banks of which remember the glorious times of Cossack glory. Times when bright flags flew over the Cossack army, which swiftly swept the green meadows with lightning cavalry, and dusty paths under the scorching sun. To go out to defend their homes, to cross the cold steel of ringing sabers with the enemy, and, bravely going into battle, to fight back the invaders. The font combines the straight lines of sharp steel sweeps, the broken lines of jousting blows, and the refinement of the accent of undulating flag lines.

Marathon was originally designed by Rudolf Koch in 1931 for Schriftgiesserei Klingspor. It is a roman with short ascenders and descenders. The serifs are small, but longer at the ends of the arms of E, F and L, M is rather splayed and is without top serifs, like M in other typefeaces designed by Rudolf Koch. The lowercase g has no link and an open tail, again like the g in other Koch types. U has the lower-case design. In the W the middle strokes cross, the lower case w has no middle serif. The figures are short-ranging. Ute Harder from the Fachhochschule Hamburg had redesigned Marathon with the help and supervision of Professor Jovica Veljovic. She has added a book weight to offer more flexibility with this beautiful typeface.

The first thought that crosses a type designer’s mind upon seeing a slab serif is: I wonder what it would look if it was serifless. And so, after building Henderson Slab , I followed my instincts and gave it a sans serif companion. Henderson Sans comes in seven weights plus italics, each of which casting an eye on the crafty lettering origins of what is now the ubiquitous mode of corporate communication. This sans serif is a glyph-for-glyph match for Henderson Slab , inheriting pretty much all of its features and quirks, like the wealth of alternates and swashed variants — simple, endearing or otherwise. Henderson Sans is a family of seven weights plus italics, all full of open features and extended Latin language support. (Basic version do not include alternates, swashes, etc).

A Sans font family of five weight for headline and text use, with old style numerals and small caps, and extensive kerning.

Hispania Script is a distinctive and distinctly nineteenth century script. It was released by Schelter & Giesecke of Leipzig, Germany around 1890. Particularly noteworthy are the sharply-pointed legs of the upper case ‘K’ & ‘R’ that seem to be characteristic of the period. Similar strokes, often with a slight curve, may be seen in typefaces like Alt-Romanish and Tinteretto by Schelter & Giesecke, Artistic and Lateinsch by Bauer and Berthold and the poster lettering of Edward Penfield. The angle of this script (approximately 24 degrees) and the sharp delicate points must have made the manufacture of this face in metal type a challenge. The resulting type was probably quite fragile and subject to accidental damage. Additionally, the sharp points would be subject to wear. With digital type, these concerns are eliminated. As far as I know, no one has ever dropped a digital letter on the floor. Nonetheless, creating a digital outline for a typeface like Hispania Script, with many crossing strokes, can be quite time-consuming. Even with an accurate scan of a good quality original, it is usually necessary to construct each crossing stroke separately and then remove the overlap in order to obtain a sharp and convincing intersection. Steep internal angles are often defined with two points, rather than one, to minimize ink or toner fill that can muddy the rendering in smaller sizes. Like all formal scripts, Hispania Script is always useful for announcements and invitations. However, the distinctiveness of of this design strongly suggests that there are other applications that may benefit from its use. Step outside the box and try it in some unexpected places. It is the unexpected that often draws a person’s eye.

ZF Ydor font family has been created to give a crafty, hand drawn look to your project. Its characters have been drawn by hand to give them a warm and authentic look. This family was inspired by the pure Garamond pattern set of fonts used by Egenolff and Berner, German printers in Frankfurt, at the end of the sixteenth century. All the experts said it was the best and most complete set of the time. The italic style used with it was Granjon’s, as in 1543 Humane Jenson. A few fleurons from the same printers have been added. It can be used variously for web-site titles, posters and flyers design, publishing texts looking like ancient ones, or greeting cards, various sorts of presentations, as a very elegant and legible font... This font supports very large sizes as easily as small sizes, remaining very smart, elegant and fine. Its original cap height is about five millimeters. We have created this family as a complement to 1906 French News since the two type families were commonly in use in the same publications, including newspapers, popular books, calendars, almanacs and posters. Notre Dame is a part of the 1990 program Type before Gutenberg, which included the work of twelve contemporary font designers and represented styles from across the ages.
