Tautier is a display font based on the specimen of Enge Mediaeval-Antigua, published in 1900 from the Bauer Type Foundry. It is intentionally redrawn to keep its overall narrow proportions. Based on the existing basic alphabets, Tautier is redrawn to appear more classical and friendly, as you can notice in the rounded corners around the beaks, as well as the lachrymal terminals in lowercases. Tautier is a display typeface suitable for large applications, for example, headlines for editorial design, branding, webpages, and environmental design. It currently comes as a single-styled typeface disposed to extend with an italic version.

Typography or Calligraphy. Unconnected or Connected. For us, at DSType Foundry, that was the main question. With Aparo, we tried to bring the best of the two worlds into a single, yet complex, typeface. Isotonic started out as a spin-off with the idea of creating a text oriented version of Ciutadella, it has since taken on a life of its own. Building on a foundation that has proven to work very well, we decided to open the counters and increase the x height. Even though it is not strictly a text font, it works surprisingly well in body sizes and screens. Gramma is a compact sans with big x-height, a robust and balanced typeface that work well both for headlines and main bodies of text. The initial constructions, assembled from a few well-defined geometric modules, were later polished into more organic forms; the letters’ arches are quite squared, and the counters and other internal negative spaces push outward, creating a tension that balances the forms’ compression. Gramma’s most evident characteristic is its “bird-beak” terminals (present in many letters, including the c, e, f, s...) that replicate the unconnected junctures between stem and curve, visible in the a,b,d,g,h.

Designed by José José Villamizar, Enza Expanded is a display sans font family. This typeface has nine styles and was published by Neo Type Foundry. This font includes 8 OpenType features including Stylistic Alternates and Standard Ligatures making this font a great value. Enza Expanded has extensive Latin language support. Its design stems from the typographic exploration for conducting an identity aimed at entrepreneurs of the Millennial Generation, also known as Generation Y. The name of this blackletter font was chosen due to the centennial of the Bauer Foundry, Frankfurt am Mai, in 1937. Ernst Schneidler probably created then the most beautiful of all fraktur fonts. They are the fruit of countless calligraphic drawings and of many years of professional experiences. Zentenar Fraktur became in its time the workhorse among German blackletter fonts. To access all ligatures in both styles, it is recommended to activate Standard and Discretionary Ligatures. The round s can be reached by typing the # key, and the combination N-o-period plus the OT feature Ordinals gives you the Numero sign.

This typeface was originally inspired by Art Deco lettering. During the development of the letterforms a strick DeStijl grid was imposed. The lowercase letterforms were created with the influences of rave/techno design styles. The result is a distinctly contemporary display font. The P22 Cusp Family contains 4 fonts: P22 Cusp Round, P22 Cusp Round Slant, P22 Cusp Square, P22 Cusp Square Slant. Grimmig draws inspiration from solid and angular blackletter shapes and the idea of cutting letters out of paper. The interaction between curves, sharp edges, and partially unconventional serif placement makes it an excellent typeface for impactful headlines. The vivid details fade into the background in smaller sizes and provide an enjoyable reading experience for continuous text. Open counters and a large x-height contribute to Grimmig’s legibility in text sizes. It was developed as part of the MA Typeface Design in the University of Reading but had started before as a graduation project for Tamara Pilz.

Iwan Zaza is a high-contrast modern Arabic typeface designed by Ahmed Zaza. The design is inspired by the Kufi calligraphic style and influenced by the Naskh style. Iwan balances classic and contemporary tastes with wide open counters and short ascenders and descenders that minimize the hight. And has a high - contrast between the vertical and the horizontal to line up in harmony with Latin. And openType alternates and ligatures set. This makes it suitable for branding, editorial, packaging and advertising. Iwan features five weights from Light to Black, and supports OpenType features for Arabic, and has a wide glyph set.

Jenson Oldstyle was designed by J. W. Phinney of the Dickinson Type Foundry in 1893. Jenson is based on the 'Golden Type' designed by William Morris in 1890 for his private press editions under the imprint of the Kelmscott Press. The original digital Lanston version of this face included a companion Oblique. This remastered set instead features a true italic based on the 1893 ATF italic version as well as a newly digitized Jenson Heavyface based on Phinney's design of 1899. Jenson Italic Pro features alternate lowercase forms based on ATFs then contemporary Cushing Oldstyle Italic.

Bookkeeper JNL is based on the lighter weight version of R. Hunter Middleton's 'Karnak', produced in 1936 for Ludlow. "Karnak" itself was based on the geometric slab-serif "Memphis", designed in 1929 by Dr. Rudolf Wolf and released originally by the Stempel Type Foundry of Germany. According to Wikipedia, "Karnak" "was named after the Karnak Temple Complex in Egypt, in reference to the fact that early slab serifs were often called "Egyptians" as an exoticism by nineteenth-century type founders." Monotype Old Style is a nineteenth century update of Caslon Old Face with characteristics of the moderns built in. Monotype Old Style was recut by Monotype in 1901 from a Stephenson Blake & Company version. The design originated at the Miller and Richard foundry in 1860. In some respects it can be seen as transitional between old style and modern, but the spirit of the old styles predominates. By the turn of the century it had become a successful rival to the moderns. The Monotype Old Style font family is an attractive design which gives a light, airy feel to text.

Disco lives on in the alphabet stylings of Reardon AOE. From its uber-fat letterforms to its hole punched counters, Reardon AOE started as a digitization of a film typeface called Joyce Black by LetterGraphics. This flashback typestyle was taken from its limited A-Z and numerals set and fleshed out to include an expanded language glyph set. Reardon AOE finds itself thrown into a late 70’s-early 80’s flashback frame of mind, appealing to all of the disco and video game typography of that time, ready to throw down the vibe for your designs.

The font Eckmann is named after its designer, Otto Eckmann, and appeared with the Klingspor font foundry in 1900. The influence of the Jugendstil is clear to see in the flowing floral contours of the letters. This font was made for larger point sizes, like on posters, and while relatively legible, it is not meant for smaller print. The font was often used in book titles and advertisements of the 19th century and today Eckmann is often used to suggest a feeling of nostalgia and is often found on the Jugendstil facades in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Syntax was designed by Swiss typographer Hans Eduard Meier, and issued in 1968 by the D. Stempel AG type foundry as their last hot metal type family. Meier used an unusual rationale in the design of this sans serif typeface; it has the shapes of humanist letters or oldstyle types (such as Sabon), but with a modified monoline treatment. The original drawings were done in 1954; first by writing the letters with a brush, then redrawing their essential linear forms, and finally adding balanced amounts of weight to the skeletons to produce optically monoline letterforms. Meier wanted to subtly express the rhythmical dynamism of written letters and at the same time produce a legible sans serif typeface. This theme was supported by using a very slight slope in the roman, tall ascenders, terminals at right angles to stroke direction, caps with classical proportions, and the humanist style a and g. The original foundry metal type was digitized in 1989 to make this family of four romans and one italic. Meier completely reworked Syntax in 2000, completing an expanded and improved font family that is available exclusively from Linotype GmbH as Linotype Syntax. In 2009 the typeface family was renamed into a more logical naming of "Syntax Next" to fit better in the Platinum Collection naming." A 14-weight sans family based on the original British ‘M.O.T.’ (Ministry of Transport) alphabet. A capitals-only, single-weight design was drawn up around 1933 for use on Britain’s road network, and remained in use until Jock Kinnear and Margaret Calvert’s ‘Transport Alphabet’ was introduced for Britain's first motorway in 1958. The identity of the original designer is not preserved; however, Antony Froshaug in a 1963 ‘Design’ magazine article mentions Edward Johnston as an advisor. Speculation that it was based on Johnston’s London Transport alphabet is discussed in archived government documents from 1957: “So far as I am aware, the Ministry alphabet was not based on Johnston’s design; indeed, it has been suggested that Gill got his idea from Johnston. Our alphabet was based on advice from Hubert Llewellyn-Smith (then chairman of the British Institute of Industrial Art) and Mr. J. G. West, a senior architect of H. M. Office of Works.” A 1955-57 revision of the alphabet which polished the somewhat mechanical aspects of the original may be the work of stone carver and typographer David Kindersley. For the digitisation, Rian Hughes added an entirely new lower case, italics and a range of weights. The lower case mimics the forms of the capitals wherever possible, taking cues form Gill and Johnston for letters such as the a and g, with single-tier versions in the italic. A uniquely British font that is now available in a versatile family for modern use.

Papillon Woodcuts is a digital revival of an ornate alphabet by French engraver Jean Michel Papillon dating back to 1760, when engraving was very fashionable in France. Each letter is displayed with a different themed background, such as a ship at sea; a fancy table topped with a bounty of fruits; flying birds; a parasol with flowers; playful cherubs; rich textured drapes and tapestries; and many more. The name of this font brings back memories of an old fried chicken restaurant in Willow Springs Illinois circa 1960’s and 1970’s, my family would all get in the car and take a long drive down to an old country road Illionis Rt 171 through a forest preserve where we’d come upon the old Willowbrook motel with a bar and restaurant next door. The restaurant was called Kegal’s, when you entered the building you had to walk through the smoky bar first to get to the restaurant, I can still see the hard wood floors with all the finish worn off from decades of foot traffic. Up until the mid 1960’s Kegal’s used to raise their own chickens behind the restaurant, back then fried chicken in the Midwest was either coated in flour or bread crumbs, Kegal’s was covered in a beautiful layer of golden bread crumbs. Before your meal arrived they’d bring a basket of dinner rolls along with crackers, bread sticks and country butter, on the side they’d serve coleslaw with a vinegar sauce, which is very common in the Midwest, the first time you try it your face puckers up like you just sucked on a lemon but you get used it over time. After waiting for what seemed like forever to a child the waitress comes out of the kitchen with a huge tray of that golden deliciousness and your mouth begins to water, in her other hand was another tray filled to overflowing with crinkle cut french fries all made by hand, I’d eat a hole handful of those french fries first then take a bite of that tender juicy farm raised chicken. Today a fine Italian restaurant occupies the old Kegal’s building and the motel is long gone, only my fond memories remain. Fast forward to 2020 and FontMesa has just made some Fried Chicken as an eight weight type font family with alternates.
