A typographic conundrum presented itself with the hand lettered title on the cover of the 1919 song "I Am Always Building Castles in the Air". The capitalized portion ["Castles in the Air"] was a hybrid mix of a few Art Nouveau-influenced rounded letters, yet along with this were squared letters with rounded corners (reflecting the upcoming Art Deco movement to take place in about another decade). As a complete alphabet, it didnít mix as well as in those few short words. What to do? It was decided to go with the squared look and save the rounder characters for a future project. The end result became Last Date JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions.

VLNL Wurst started as a final result in the Typographic Chinese Whispers project for Typeradio.org, in collaboration with the Type & Media master course. A soundtrack of festive Bavarian music accompanied by burping, followed by loud crunching and munching, inspired Alexandre Saumier Demers to create this typeface family. The fraktur letter forms were composed with sausages to form a recipe available in three flavours: Brat, Blut and Bier Wurst. This 'charcuterie typographique' is ideal for an established butcher shop, a local grocery store or a casual BBQ with friends. Wurst is so tasty, you can't get enough of it! A "Wurst Schreiber" script was developed to automatically draw the sausages around the skeleton.

I admit: I had a bit of a crazy week when I thought up an drew this font. I broke my arm during kickboxing training on monday, leaving me in a cast - unable to do most everyday things, like getting a good night's sleep (try sleeping with a humongous cast on your arm). Thank goodness, it is my left arm, so I can still draw letters and use my laptop. So… this font has been made entirely using one arm! It is a bit of a horror font - it sort of sums up my mood right now. Glyphs have very little spacing, adding to the evil look of Plague Master. Comes with a lethal amount of diacritics.

Dvarlin Staves is a collection of 512 rune glyph's divided into six font family's. Skiltmaler is the typeface that refers to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era 1837 to 1901, the Victorian era was the period in which fly poster typography emerged. The large amount of colour in combination with large font sizes were created from movable metal type. As well as being made from wood, this was used to create the two-coloured typefaces. You would imagine this would be specific to the '3D' styled type seen on the poster to create the drop shadow. Skiltmaler works well with normal size text, but it works even better for large displays, short words, or even just to incorporate a few or single characters in a design.

Crisis is a child of the dictatorship of economics. Since time is money the time budget of its production has been rigidly limited. Crisis was designed and generated completely on one single day. The target was to make a useful font while investing nothing more than absolutely indispensable. The component-based glyph construction scheme of another font has been utilized, further detailing work has been strictly limited. Due to those restrictions some letters have rather unusual shapes. This straightforward and contemporary sans (320 glyphs) is of compact proportions and very legible even when set in small sizes. In printing you get more text on one page and thus save up to 30% of paper.

Merrivale is an ideal example of the benefits of keeping ones eyes open- it was inspired by the gilt-finished raised lettering on a late Victorian shopsign in Melbourne, Australia. The family of seven faces include upper and lower case forms, small capitals, all capital forms, and flamboyant display forms. Extensive Opentype features are incorporated. Donald DBXL Beekman lives on a ship in Amsterdam’s waters (well, the Amstel river, actually). Living on the water inspired him to design this ‘cruise ship’ typeface VLNL Decks.
