Answer Songs have been around for [probably] just as long as there have been songs. 1917's "If I Catch the Guy Who Wrote Poor Butterfly" was the answer to the 1916 hit "Poor Butterfly" [by Raymond Hubbell and John Golden], which in turn was inspired by the Puccini opera "Madame Butterfly". "Poor Butterfly" was so popular that this "answer" tune had as part of its lyrics "That melody haunts me in my sleep; it seems to creep." Nonetheless, the sheet music for William Jerome and Arthur Green's comic lament had the title hand lettered with an oval nib lettering pen and is now availably as a digital type face called Dip Pen JNL.

Cartes has a bit of a strange origin story, as far as fonts go. It’s a combination of ideas from 1920’s advertising and hand-painted letters from the 1500s. The typeface was designed to flow with elegance and speed yet retain a sense of the handmade. The serifs flow with indentations implying movement and terminate with inky globules that lend your copy a sense of gravitas. This typeface can be used for headlines, short texts, posters, logos, headlines, headlines in big sizes or just as easily for ad text. At large sizes, pen strokes can be seen that give the typeface a touch of humanity and vigor. At smaller sizes the type is still unique, but readable.

This family was created from the set of font faces used in Lima (Peru) by Antonio Ricardo in 1584 for the first publication ever printed in Southern America: a four-page leaflet in Spanish entitled "Pragm·tica sanciÛn" with information about the new Georgian calendar of 1582 which had not yet been communicated to the colonies. In our two styles (Regular & Italic), font faces, kernings and spacing are as close as possible to the original. This Pro font covers Western, Eastern and Central European languages (including Celtic), Baltic and Turkish, with standard and “long s” ligatures in each of the two styles. A,B,D,E,F,M,N,P,R,V,W swashed capitals in the italic style.

Sagarana is an elegant display typeface rooted in the style of romantic or didones letterforms; however, it is a sans serif with a cleaner appearance. The contrast and the vertical stress maintain the modern style, while the terminals, the finials, the proportions and the narrow look enhance its stylish personality. Sagarana was initially inspired by a Brazilian book cover from 50’s. The name itself combines the words “saga” (as in the English sense of “story”) and “rana,” a Tupi word (Indigenous language) that roughly means “showing similarities”.

Galaxo Dot is a sister to Galaxo Line. HGB Galaxo is a tribute to Othmar Motter (1927–2010), the Vorarlberg graphic artist and typeface designer, who designed very individual and perfectly crafted typefaces in the 1970's and later. (Motter Ombra, Motter Tectura ...) From a Motter sketch of 5 letters for a logogram, I derived a simplified letterform and developed all the necessary characters. Working on these glyphs and delving deeper into Motter's letterforms, the respect for the accuracy with which he drew his letters (in ink) grew more and more. The spiral resembles the shape of a galaxy, hence the name Galaxo. The font is suitable for retro, poster and logo design.

Guillaume is a small family of text fonts with its roots in the French sixteenth century. The roman is based on the types of Guillaume Le Bé (c.1525–1598), and the italic on those of Claude Garamont (Garamond) (d. 1561). Garamont’s romans have inspired countless modern interpretations, but his italics, despite their merit, have attracted much less attention. Guillaume offers extensive support for European languages, and is best suited for use in applications that support OpenType. Among its OpenType features are ligatures, small caps, several sets of numerals, contextual alternates, intelligent implementation of long ‘s’ and other period features, and fractions. Duktus is a script typeface with a 1940’s flavour. It is a delicate script with letters not quite connected, having large, flourished capitals and small lowercase with long ascenders and descenders. It has a crisp, precise appearance, but is not rigidly formal. The design was inspired by the typeface Donatello by Wagner & Schmidt in 1935 and published by Società Nebiolo, Torino. A Roman typeface with emphasized triangular serifs. A font like this one could have been designed in 18th century France. To some extent, Auxerre is a precursor of “Etienne,” which later became popular as an advertising typeface of the 19th century. First place in a spelling-bee competition, a Harvard University diploma or the Nobel Peace Prize? Font designed from work by an anonymous printer in Lyon (France) to print the French popular novel Les Grandes et inestimables Chroniques du grand et enorme geant Gargantua [...] in 1532. The original font has a relatively small number of characters. This font include a “long s”, as typicaly medieval, but also a few ligatures . A render sheet, enclosed with files help to identify them and accented or special others characters on keyboard. It can be used as web-site titles, posters and fliers, editing ancient texts, menus or greeting cards as a very decorative font... Although this font remains clear and easy to read from 8 or 9 points on screen, it is clearly designed for print works.

Acklebury is a chunky, reverse contrast, slab-serif typeface available in two styles. It has heaps of personality, plenty of open type features, and a whole host of special characters and dingbats. Although it's drawn from historical sources, Acklebury is not a straight revival, rather more of an homage to the many, varied, extended lining figures of the late 1800's. This font was inspired by the “Cancellaresca moderna ” type, which was calligraphed by Francesco Periccioli (published in 1610 in Siena, Italy). It was entirely handwritten by the designer for each circumstance, using quill pen and medieval ink on a rough paper, with added characters as accented ones and a lot of ligatures with respect for the original design. This font includes “long s” and also a lot of ligatures as “ff”, “ffi” “fij” “pp”... It can be used for web-site titles, posters and flier designs, editing ancient texts or greeting cards, or as a very decorative and elegant font. This font retains its qualities and beauty over a wide range of sizes.

Sztos (2018-2022) is a remix of one of the most famous grotesques used in Poland – Baccarat (published by Jan Idźkowski i S-ka in 1922). My version loosely refers to the original. On the one hand, I wanted to modernize the drawing and proportions, on the other hand, I did’t want to lose the historical flavour and details in which you can still feel traditional printing. In addition to the fairly wide version of the normal style, there is also a narrow version. Thanks to this contrast, Sztos gives the possibility of expressive combinations of different styles. This font was created inspired from a handwritten copy of the "Brief story of the second journey in Canada" (1535) by French explorer Jacques Cartier. It is an early "Civilité" manual style, closely looking like the "Civilité" script font carved by Robert Granjon a few years later and still strongly influenced by blackletters forms, clearly visible in the capitals or long s, d, e, f or t forms. (Look at our "1557 Civilite Granjon Pro" and the latest "1638 Civilite Manual"). It is containing Western (including Celtic) and Northern European, Icelandic, Baltic, Eastern, Central European and Turquish diacritics. Historical forms, titling alternates and the numerous lower alternates or ligatures made the font looking like a real various hand.

Some scribbles on a bar napkin, a note from a cute girl passed in history class, what is there to say but why not a typeface? Actually it's that late night, �let's get this typeface done� madness that causes these flights of fancy. Anything to relieve the boredom of doing all those kerning pairs. Or maybe it's sunspots? Ms Kitty is all uppercase letterforms so there are two versions of each letter, one in the cap position, another in the lowercase position. Besides the regular weight and bold, there�s a bolder and much bolder in the works. And perhaps there will be a "too bold to be believed" version. Depends on the sunspots.

As a kid I used to write my favourite football teams name with 3D letters over and over again. I spent hours doing this - often to find out I had the colors wrong, or I had made a spelling error or two - but now, several years after, I have created the "Like a cat" font - so that you can make "handmade" headlines or funny quotes or even your favourite football teams name in a swoosh! Brrrrr is supposed to represent snow-covered letters, though it could also be letters covered with frosting. The lower case letters are identical to the upper-case letters. Buried in the font is another set of letters on Christmas tree ornaments. (They are on unicode characters in the 2400 block, circled digits and letters. See here.) The OpenType Stylistic Sets feature makes accessing these letters easier than using unicode, and another font, InsideLetters-Christmas, develops them further. The Brrrrr-Icing style can be used in a layer over Brrrrr to give the snowcap any color, not just the background color.

Each character of Dog Eared began its life as a half-inch wide strip of paper, folded and Scotch-taped into formation, and then scanned and recreated digitally. Dog Eared is distinguished from other folded paper style typefaces by its robustness and versatility: each numeral and upper- and lowercase letter has a stylistic alternate. Dog Eared Striped is a traditional single color font, while Dog Eared Solid is a chromatic variant that can be used for a two-toned effect. I saw a cool UT-Ligature on an old (maybe 70's or 80's) Texas Longhorns fan-shirt - it was in 3D and I wanted something like that with my own initials A and B to print it on a baseball hat. I started drawing it and when I was finished, I thought it might be nice to do the same for my officemates. I needed another G, T and K. After finishing that I thought it might be cool to do this for other people as well. Since the source of all the 3D glyphs is found in the regular ones which get moved by a 45 degree angle and then connected with lines , I first draw all the uppercase regular glyphs. The thing that followed was kind of an addiction: after finishing the uppercase letters, I wanted to add lowercase letters, after finishing the 3D letters, I thought it would be nice to have a fill version to layer with the 3D letters. Having a rough, woodcut version of the regular style would be cool, too. And the font is also pretty much suited to make a stencil version. When all this was done, I was interested on how the font would look like without the serifs and curves instead of the 45 degree angles, so I did the Longhorn Sans. Good to use for all sports-related designs, especially retro-style soccer/football shirts. Uppercase characters can be combined to form ligatures or logotypes.

Transport New is a redrawing of the typeface designed for British road signs. In addition to the familiar Heavy and Medium weights, Transport New extrapolates and adds a previously unreleased Light weight font originally planned for back-lit signage but never actually applied. Version 3.0 of Transport New features significant improvements including numerous outline and spacing refinements, and a full complement of Latin Extended-A characters. Also, to align Transport New with the 2015 release of Motorway, the other typeface used for UK road signage, Italic fonts for all three weights have been added. Originally designed by Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert beginning in 1957 and first published on the Preston bypass in 1958, the original Transport font has subtle eccentricities which add to its distinctiveness, and drawing the New version involved walking a tightrope between impertinently eliminating awkwardness and maintaining idiosyncrasy. The Grotesk roots of the glyphs were investigated and cheekily fine-tuned – uncomfortably close terminals of characters such as 5, 6, C, G, and e were shortened, the S and s were given a more upright aspect and their protruding lower terminals tucked in, overly wide glyphs like the number 4 were narrowed, and some claustrophobic counters were slightly opened up. The question mark was redesigned and parentheses given some stroke contrast. The x height was edged fractionally even taller. The Heavy font is actually more of a Bold, and the Light is pretty much a regular weight, but the original nomenclature has been retained for old times’ sake.

Miscellany JNL collects numerous images of various genres into one dingbat font. There are vintage stencil patterns, old-time ad cuts and decorations, line spacers [number keys 1 through 7], conversation balloons, parking lot symbols and other assorted goodies.

Basalt is a hard, black volcanic rock with less than about 52 weight percent silica. Because of basalt's low silica content, it has a low viscosity (resistance to flow). Basalt is erupted at temperatures between 1100 to 1250° C.

A tessellation is a shape that can be used to completely fill the plane—simple examples are isosceles triangles, squares, and hexagons. Tessellation patterns are eye-catching and visually appealing, which is the reason that they have long been popular in a variety of decorative situations. These Tessie fonts have two family members, a solid style that must have different colors when used and an outline style. They can be used separately or they can be used in layers with the outline style on top of the solid style. For rows to align properly, leading must be the same as point size. To see how patterns can be constructed, see the “Samples” file here. Shapes that tessellate and also resemble real-world objects are often called Escher-like tessellations. TessieMoreStuff contains mostly Escher-like tessellations with no clear organizing principle. Most or all of these shapes were discovered/created by the font designer during the past twenty years in the process of designing maze books, colorings books, and a book about tessellations. (Earlier tessellation fonts from IngrimayneType, the TessieDingies fonts, lack a black or filled version so cannot do colored patterns. The addition of a solid style that must be colored makes these new fonts a bit more difficult to use but offers far greater possibilities in getting visually interesting results.)
