The sheet music for "I Used to be Color Blind" (from the 1938 Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers movie "Carefree") had its title crafted in ornate Art Deco hand lettering. Keeping the original letter forms, the interior embellishment was simplified to a dot-and-line pattern [eliminating a secondary squiggly line] for a cleaner look. The type design is now digitally available as Performing Arts JNL, in both regular and oblique versions. Way back before digital imaging, video tape and computer editing, the home movie enthusiast had to shoot on film his own titles using any one of a variety of movie titling kits on the market. One common approach was to arrange white ceramic letters on a colored background and film them. A set of such letters provided the inspiration for Entitled JNL from Jeff Levine. The classic, sleek Art Deco lines of this font makes it an all-purpose design for any headline needs.

Kwersity is a boxy, geometric, slab-serifed typeface with strokes of uniform weight. Its circular elements are almost rectangular. The narrower style has a high x-height. Mi negra is a funny and hilarious typography designed especially for children, thought and created by Isabel de Gregorio. It could be described as an original combination between a semi-handwright and semi sans-serif font. Thanks to its structure and nice endings "Mi Negra" is recommended for composing short texts (logotypes, packing, posters, etc.). It may similarly be used for illustrations and comics, as well as in printing press works for children from 6 to 13 years old for instance. Mi Negra has been conceived to be a useful support in all kinds of illustrations works (please note that Isabel, the type designer, considers herself primarily an illustrator). The font designer of Mi Negra tells that every time she needed to provide some text data (i.e. in children infographies) and needed to make them more understandable and suitable for children, she used this typography. The former idea was than to create a font who could be a second option to comic sans, but as the project started to reveal its forms, it was clear that it was revealing another connotation and its own character. In this way, Mi Negra went on modifying its forms and the more it developed, the more it was showing its new characteristics and concepts. The family is composed of three weighs: Light, regular and black. It provides also interesting functional ligatures. It also includes a dingbat with nice doggies. It has 434 characters and can work with 208 languages.

The characteristic ‘French face’ was originally made in 1899 under the supervision of Joseph Pinel. Thus, what was originally French 10 pt. Nº 2, got its present name. The Frenchman Joseph Pinel called himself a "typographical engineer", but was at the time employed as a type draughtsman at the Linotype Works in Altrincham. It appears that this and some other faces that he supervised, were, except for use on the Linotype, also meant for manufacturing matrices for the Dyotype. This composing machine was an invention of Pinel. The Dyotype was a rather complicated machine and consisted, like the Monotype, of two separate contraptions, a keyboard which produced a perforated paper ribbon and a casting machine which produced justified lines of movable type. Unlike the Monotype which has a square matrix carrier, the Dyotype had the matrices on a drum (in fact two drums, hence the name of the machine). A Pinel Diotype company was founded in Paris and a machine was built with the help of the printing press manufacturer Jules Derriey. As is often the case, a lack of sufficient capital prevented the commercializing of this ingenious composing machine. Coen Hofmann digitized the font from a batch of very incomplete, damaged and musty drawings, which he dug up in Altrincham. He redrew all characters, bringing up the hairstrokes somewhat in the process. The result is a roman and italic, while the roman font also includes Small Caps

Trencher JNL is based on hand-cut stencils spray-painted onto a vintage 1947 Cleveland Trencher acquired by the Marine Corps Mechanized Museum at Camp Pendleton, California. Restoration volunteer Brian Platzer supplied to Jeff Levine the images of the stencil markings - and they were quickly re-drawn and turned into a digital type face.

Raclette grills are an ingenious Swiss invention. This tabletop grill is used to cook raclette cheese, a unique sort of cheese produced by the happy cows of Valais. Swiss designer Michael Parson created a typeface in 2002 that speaks endearingly to his hearty homeland tradition - endearingly enough, he named it Raclette. Raclette most likely started out as a bold, condensed sans serif. But then, just as one pulls little trays off of a raclette grill, Parsons quickly removed many rectilinear bits from the edges of each letter. Text set in Raclette looks like an old brick wall, or perhaps like a raclette party for several hundred people, that ended an hour ago! Raclette is one of ten of Michael Parson's experiments in type design featured in the Take Type 5 collection from Linotype GmbH."

Sprout is a low-contrast sans serif, slightly condensed for economy of space, and complete with 6 weights in Roman and Italic. It has open apertures and a generous x-height for clarity of reading. It also comes with a weight balanced italic, which can be used for differentiation or as a standalone typeface in itself. The defining feature of the family is the taut curve, where the inner counter pushes out toward the outer contour, creating a feeling of tension in the curve. Neutral and universal are two words that could describe a kind of perfection. The search for neutrality and universality is part of history in type design; it was specially important in the so-called Swiss Style. Samplex is a typeface that joins this particular search. The design gets rid of unnecessary elements and stays away from style conflicts. The large and slightly condensed body of lowercase letters makes Samplex a good choice for long paragraphs, and especially appropriate for screen devices. Letters with a blocky appearance give shape to a text in perfect order, ideal for grid lovers and layouts with a strict structure. The design of Samplex is clean and efficient. The diagonal cuts are reserved to the italic letterforms, setting some distance between the solid upright characters and the dynamic oblique forms.

Arkeo BT is designer Brian Sooy's first typeface family published by Bitstream. Given very few design elements to work with, Brian has designed a bitmap font that is unique and very readable. There are three widths, Condensed, Regular and Extended. In our opinion, pixels never looked so good. Arkeo performs equally well on screen and as on paper. The OpenType versions include an extended character set featuring oldstyle figures, fractions and additional f-ligatures. Design was begun in late 2001 and completed in 2002. Sooy asked Bitstream to critique, which we did gladly. We also added additional characters for OpenType. This included alternate figure set, an extended set of fractions and additional f-ligatures. Sooy used preliminary versions for setting parts of the TypeCon 2002 material and website.

The basis for Series A Signage JNL is Highway Gothic; a type style design formally known as the FHWA Series. The font was developed by the United States Federal Highway Administration, and originally consisted of only capital letters and figures. Each Letter designation represented a character width from "A" (condensed) to "F" (wide). Due to poor visibility at high speeds, Series "A" was discontinued. At one point lower case characters were added to the various widths of the design, but this typeface revival is based on the original guidelines specified in the 1948 (reprinted 1952) book "Standard Alphabets for Highway Signs" [this was the original name for the FHWA series fonts preceding the eventual name change to Highway Gothic]. Unlike the original, Series A Signage JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Willard T. Sniffin designed this extra condensed art deco typeface for American Type Founders in 1932. Low-waisted capital letters curve in stunning geometric fashion next to large, oversized lowercase letters. The heart of this classic design is undeniably 1930s but it also looks just fine in contemporary situations. Many of the original alternate characters plus a few new ones have been included in this complete digital version. Newport Classic with Alternates is also available as an OpenType font. This version now contains small caps, lining and oldstyle figures, prebuilt fractions, stylistic alternates, word ornaments and a wide assortment of f-ligatures. These advanced features currently work in Adobe Creative Suite InDesign and Illustrator.
