Sticky Shoes was inspired by a sign at a local flea market. The artist behind the sign obviously didn’t care much about painting the letters “in the right way” - leaving a slobby and uneven impression. And what is wrong with that? Nothing, if you ask me. I tried my best to capture the charm and innocence behind that sign in Sticky Shoes. I even made the paint version go outside the outline in the Regular version! I added 6 different versions of each letter, and they automatically changes as you type. That goes for all 4 versions, and they even mix very nicely!

The starting point for Wildcat was the 3×5 squared grid popular for tiled lettering and American sportswear typefaces. However, Wildcat breaks free of the net whenever necessary. This typeface comes across as tough, it has no soft curves, and evokes strength and confidence. An unsold 1973 TV pilot for the series “Catch 22” (based on Joseph Heller’s 1961 book and the subsequent 1970 movie) had its title hand lettered in an extra bold stencil type style. Heller coined the phrase as a satire on absurd military rules and bureaucracy. Although the show’s title provided only five characters to work with, there was enough inspiration there to create the military styled Enlisted Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. According to Wikipedia: “A catch-22 is a paradoxical situation from which an individual cannot escape because of contradictory rules or limitations.”

A slightly regularized digital version of a late Baroque Fraktur type, probably from the beginning of the 18th century, issued by the Norstedts type foundry in Stockholm in 56 point size as "Sju petit fraktur nr 2". This digital font is designed for rather large sizes, at least 30 points. The font includes accented letters for all Western languages, as well as a long s and the usual Fraktur ligatures, e.g. ch, ck, st, tz. The font can be used for logos, packaging, posters, restaurant menus, beer and wine labels etc. associated with traditional German and Scandinavian culture.

Gene Gable is known to many graphic artists from his on-line column 'Scanning Around with Gene', which was on the Creative Pro website for a number of years, covering a variety of topics ranging from printing techniques to paper ephemera; water applied decals to lettering stencils. Gene has also been a great help in providing vintage source material to Jeff Levine, which resulted in many additional font designs. Helenium miniscule adds greater flexibility by extending the family with a fun range of rounded lower case forms.

French Art Deco lettering found within the pages of the 1934 publication L'Art du Tracé Rationnel de la Lettre (roughly translated to “The Rational Path Art of the Letter”) have provided a number of designs well-suited for digital revival. A hand lettered sans with varying character widths was the basis for Colmar JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. As the source of the lettering design was a French publication, the typeface is named for the city of Colmar, which (according to Wikipedia) is the third-largest commune of the Alsace region in north-eastern France.

Eckhardt Relaxed JNL was modeled from an example of a casual, hand lettered alphabet from a page of a vintage textbook. This style of freehand lettering always lends itself well to posters, show card and sign work, but is equally at home in ad design or titling. The typeface is an addition to the group of type styles inspired by sign lettering, and is named for Jeff Levine's good friend, the late Al Eckhardt; whose shop turned out quality hand lettering from 1959 until his passing in 2005. Latin music was all the rage in the United States from the 1930s through the 1950s and songs with a “South of the Border” or “Old Mexico” theme were plentiful. The 1940 sheet music for “Make Love with a Guitar” evoked the idea of serenading one’s lovely lady on horseback while strumming the guitar. ..at least if you went by the by the illustration under the song’s name. As the hand lettered title was rendered in an Art Deco design, it became the basis for Jazz Guitar JNL [which seemed a more befitting name], and is available in both regular and oblique versions.
