Soleil, designed by Wolfgang Homola, is a geometric sans serif typeface. Unlike most existing geometric sans serif typefaces, it has asymmetrical counters, making it look fresher, more dynamic and more contemporary. Simple geometric forms – such as the circle or the square – played a certain role in the design of the letterforms, but in order to introduce more fluidity into the rather stiff and rigid concept of geometric sans serif typefaces, a lot of optical corrections were necessary. Soleil is based on the modernist ideas of simplicity, clarity and reduction to essential forms. Yet its letter shapes are not the result of geometric construction, but of a design process that brings together simplicity and fluidity, clarity and rhythm. Calps is a condensed sans serif font. An unfussy design, the font is designed to be consistent across such letters as a, b, d, q, p, g and C, G, O, Q, creating a uniformity for the set. Each corner of the line is carved to decrease its sharpness, adding a touch of friendliness. If the standard font is not sufficiently condensed, there is a slim variation offering narrower proportions. In addition to the slim variation, the font also comes in roman and italic versions in 9 weights, offering a total of 36 variations for the font.

In the 1990s I drew a text face for the San Francisco Chronicle. It was based on W. A. Dwiggins’ Electra and incorporated many features of the Linotype Legibility Series: More compact, with a taller lowercase X-height, etc. That type was called Electric and it was the Chronicle’s text face for nearly a decade, surviving several redesigns. From that, I made Azuza, a more detailed and sensitive style. Azuza was recognized in the TDC2 type competition in 2001. Then it went into hibernation as a Type 1 font family. Today it is back. The concept of a bold connected script with a hand lettered feel has been on my bucket list for decades. I imagined a pretentious, ornate, swashy look, a variety of word-end embellishments, heaps of ligatures and underscores. It took a weekend workshop on Python Scripting at Type@Cooper in San Francisco reinforcing the smarts of Opentype to make it happen. Frontage Condensed is a layered type system inspired by eye-catching and colorful facade signage. Its main aspect is — like many typographic installations on storefronts — three dimensional. The narrow, generously spaced letterforms lend the typeface a bold and eminent voice. 1977 was a good year for soccer. Attendance for the North American Soccer League (NASL) grew 33%, to 13,000 per game. Brazillian soccer legend Pelé played his final match, kicking for both the New York Cosmos and Santos of Brazil. And a soccerboy named Charlie was crowned with the nickname Chanky. In honor of his soccer hero Pelé, Charlie insisted the neighbor kids call him Chelé. They laughed at him and called him Chanky after Spanky from the Little Rascals. As he grew into his manhood, he became Chank the internationally renowned font designer. Chank created this font Soccerboy, as filtered through the artistic eyes of his 1977 childhood. It's a tri-line font, hand-drawn in Chank's signature cartoon whimsy. Soccerboy encourages play with color and alternate characters. Create coloring effects yourself using layers and the magic wand and paint bucket tools in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.

Tinteretto is a very beautiful, decorative Art-d�co font which is ideal for ad design about fine arts events and the world of arts and crafts as well as in restaurants, bars and for food packaging. Tintoretto harmonizes well with serif and sans serif fonts created at the beginning of the last century. It contains character sets for West and Central European as well as for Romania and Turkey. When Unger started his work on Tintoretto, he had the splendid idea of adding a Fill version to the original 3D characters. Combining both fonts make it even stronger and more beautiful. How to combine both fonts in order to achieve a color fill effect: Type your word or phrase and do not make any changes to the spacing or kerning. Duplicate or copy the original and change it to the Fill version (font change). Apply a color to the copy and position it exactly behind the original. See and love the result.

TurvyTopsy offers all the fun of delightful hand-drawn irregularity, captured in a typeface. Designing this was a wonderful exercise in ignoring all the rules of precise geometric construction to which we normally work. These irregular forms somehow achieve a delightful character & legibility all of their own.

I bought a pair of green gumboots (or Wellingtons) the other day. I have a little wilderness outside and it is quite muddy, so I thought a pair of boots would be a good buy. Gumboots is a handmade comic font. It comes in a regular and a fat style and you can use it for just about anything that needs a bit of comic relief.

Opticart is a family of glyphs inspired by Op Art (Optical Art).
